Analysis of Crude Oil and Heavy Fuel Oil by High Temperature

Comprehensive Two-Dimensional Gas Chromatography

Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (HT-GC×GC-TOFMS)

Figure 1 depicts a 2D contour plot of a heavy fuel oil sample analyzed by the LECO Pegasus 4D

GC×GC-TOFMS consumable free instrument. The sample can be subdiveded into several main

groups by using classification in combination with Visual Basic scripting toolbox, both being

integrated in the ChromaTOF software package. The magnified section of the alkane region

around n-eicosane exhibits the explored fine structure of the particular iso- and n-alkanes

enabling to determine of their ratio. A semiquantification can also be performed and Figure 2

exhibits a pie chart with the percentage distribution of the assigned chemical classes.

Features of HT-GC×GC-TOFMS analysis

D developed by ASG:

- sample investigation up to n-C60 possible

- detailed information about chemical

composition of high boiling samples

- determination of n-/iso-alkane ratio

- several other parameters and customized

analyses on request

- prizes on request
