 ANALYSIS FROM THE SURVEY FOR THE WHOLE VILLAGE: 1.Sex Ratio- Derisanamcop e has 55% of males as opposed to 45% females. The percentage of females have drastically increased over the past 50 years thanks to strict government laws and better awareness opposing female infanticide and foeticide. Thus, there has been a healthy growth in females as parents no longer consider the female se to be a burden. !ew interviews taken have even suggested that there has been almost no female infanticides over the past few decades. "ale percentage has always been the more dominant throughout the history of this village. 2. Literacy Rate- The criteria for literacy has been set at the ##$ or the present day &0th level. 'eeping in mind these factors, 5(% of the people found in this village have met the basic re)uirements to be classi*ed as literate. The literacy rate has also undergone a drastic increase over the last few decades, again due to increasing awareness regarding the bene*ts of good educations. +eople send their wards to nearby towns of oothapandi and Thittuvilai for secondary education, and after their schooling, they have become broad minded and send them to ma-or cities like hennai, and sometimes even outside Tamil adu. Therefore, the literacy rate is on a steady rise. 3. Caste- There are a lot of rahmins or /yers in Derisanamcope mainly concentrated in "elderisanamc ope1, their total percentage rising upto 42%. 3fter the /yer caste, come the Devars, who form a )uarter of the total population. 2% of people living in Derisanamcope are airs. nly a small percentage of &&% are 6ellalars. 3nother notable feature is the total absence of other ma-or religions like hristianity, /slam, and so on. 4.Occupation- Due to the increasing urbanisation, the number of farmers are on the decrease over the past decade. !arming families for generations are slowly coming down, as the scope of better paying -ob o7ers tempts them away to work in the private sector2(%1. 3 whopping 4% of women are housewives, some taking care of their *elds, others rearing cattle and poultry. nly &4% of the total population are farmers. thers either work as coolies, temple priests or at the panchayat o8ce. &2% of people face unemployment. 5.Age- &&% of the Derisanamcope9s population is aged under &0. 3nother &&% is aged between && and 20. etween 2& and 0, only a small population eists as most have migrated to towns and cities in search of better -obs with a higher salary. nly another &&% belong to this category. &:% are middle aged between & and 40. Male percentage has always been the more dominant throughout the history of this village.2. Literacy Rate-The criteria for literacy has been set at the SSLC or the present day 10th level. Keeping in mind these factors, 56% of the people found in this village have met the basic requirements to be classified as literate. The literacy rate has also undergone a drastic increase over the last few decades, again due to increasing awareness regarding the benefits of good educations. People send their wards to nearby towns of Boothapandi and Thittuvilai for secondary education, and after their schooling, they have become broad minded and send them to major cities like Chennai, and sometimes even outside Tamil Nadu. Therefore, the literacy rate is on a steady rise.3. Caste-There are a lot of Brahmins or Iyers in Derisanamcope (mainly concentrated in Melderisanamcope), their total percentage rising upto 42%. After the Iyer caste, come the Devars, who form a quarter of the total population. 23% of people living in Derisanamcope are Nairs. Only a small percentage of 11% are Vellalars. Another notable feature is the total absence of other major religions like Christianity, Islam, and so on.4.Occupation-Due to the increasing urbanisation, the number of farmers are on the decrease over the past decade. Farming families for generations are slowly coming down, as the scope of better paying job offers tempts them away to work in the private sector(26%). A whopping 34% of women are housewives, some taking care of their fields, others rearing cattle and poultry. Only 14% of the total population are farmers. Others either work as coolies, temple priests or at the panchayat office. 12% of people face unemployment.5.Age-11% of the Derisanamcope's population is aged under 10. Another 11% is aged between 11 and 20. Between 21 and 30, only a small population exists as most have migrated to towns and cities in search of better jobs with a higher salary. Only another 11% belong to this category. 18% are middle aged between 31 and 40. The maximum population is aged between 41 and 60 (27%). And another 22% is aged between 61 and 80. This feature was attributed to the fact that old, retired people, prefer the silent atmosphere if their village and homes, compared to their children who nowadays tend to prefer the more busy life of the cities.
