Analysing music
magazines
Header: clearly shows the company’s name as its bold and stands out most from this cover.
Call out: “the 1975” to attract attention of
particular fans. Bold and pick for attraction and to co-ordinate with colour
scheme.Main image: Black and white, so colours of
clothing will not distract away from the main colour
scheme set for the front cover. Slightly off centre,
one man looking away and one looking forward gives a uniqueness by not both subjects looking forward and being un-original.Call out: “the Smiths” clearly shows the main article of this magazine this particular month by
the size of the font saying “smiths” to attract
attention again from that specific music taste. Linking this with the
image, it’s the magazines main focus.
Call outs on the column inch: well known musicians to
again attract attention from specific audiences
to purchase this magazine. Again, pink
and black is used to fit in with colour scheme as well as being bold to
stand out.
“2014 special” makes it sound exclusive and
that only Q has this authority and power
over other magazines. Main colour scheme: black, white, grey and
pink. The header “Q” does not cooperate with this as
it’s the traditional and well known title for the magazine being red.
Target audience:They have set their
target audience specifically for The Smiths fans, so a
teenage/young adult audience. They have
done this by making this the main subject by the image and largest call out on the front cover. However, their target audience may vary slightly by having
column inch call outs with other well-known
music artists which may appeal to other
audiences.
The colour scheme:By having a black and white colour scheme with a bright colour pink may incorporate a specific target audience in
which Q wanted to reach, maybe interpreting an older generation by the black and
white scheme. However, this could just be to be different and make
the pink fonts stand out and so draws attention to these
specific call outs. Skills: Using layers: layering words and the image on top of each other to look professional and so no space is left empty- fills
the pageColumn inch: minimal
column inch yet is effective as its bold and
stands outAll wording is visible and
not blurred by background image.
The effect of these
particular aspects to the
cover..
Header: “billboard” down the side and so is different from other magazines. It also matches Pharrell’s skin tone, which sticks with the colour scheme and links the subject in well. The actual font is
rounded and bold, maybe this could interpret its
target audience of young teens and adults. Subject: he is looking
away and is centre of the page, taking up all space in which maybe why the
hat has been incorporated. Clothes fit in
with the colour scheme and so have been hand
picked by photographer or editor?
Shading on his face makes the photograph
look better and look professional.
Column inch: doesn’t stand out as much yet is noticeable and readable.
Bold and italics have been used for
exaggeration or for attraction.
Call out: “best song battle” hints at what the
article about Pharrell may be about or
include.
Bold writing in column inch: “Pharrell” has been put in bold for attracting attention of the specific
audience.
Colour scheme: Brown, white and shades of grey.
This magazine is much plainer than the first one,
simple yet effective.
Target audience: I believe the target
audience is aimed at teenagers to young adults, as Pharrell
Williams is a current music artist and
attracts the younger generations.
Compared to the other cover, this one mainly focuses on one artist, and briefly mentions what the magazine also includes in the
column inch.
The effect of these
particular aspects to the
cover..
Skills:Layering: They have layered Pharrell so his
hat is infront of the header yet his body is behind, this is done to
look professional and to link it all together. Different fonts:
different fonts used to attract attention (eg:
bold is to stand out and make visible and italics used to be easy on the
eye when reading, much softer than bold)
The colour scheme:By having the colour
scheme darker colours with white to contrast maybe done to target an older
audience by not using block bright colours like pinks and
reds. Its done to look professional and mature.
