Analysing a CD cover: Ke$ha (The front cover)

Genre:

The CD cover could be between the genres of pop and rock. This is shown by the glittery lettering of the artist's and the singles name. This is typical of the pop genre because the conventions of pop are colourful and bright. This follows the conventions of rock too, as rock is often portrayed as being dirty and messy which is shown in the photograph of the artist and she has black dirt on her hand which might suggest that she is slightly dark contradicting the glittery title.

Lettering/Font styles and sizes:

The only lettering that is on the front of the CD cover is the name and the single name. This is following the conventions of most CD covers. Both of the names are in golden glitter and the font may portray that the artist is careless and disruptive and goes against the rules (rebel). The lettering fits in with the genre of music, which is electro-pop as the font is electrifying, and giving off a sense that her music is rebellious and unique to some extent. The size of the word ‘Kesha’ appears to be bigger than ‘Tik Tok’. It may have been designed this way in order for her fans to identify the CD when placed on a shelf in a record label shop. Also, the font colour is metallic gold. This specific colour may have been used to suggest how wealthy Kesha is and that her music is ‘golden’, initiating that she makes top successful tracks.

The image that is on the front cover of the CD is a photograph of Kesha. Her hair is scruffy but still appears healthy looking. You cannot see her clothing or the location and there are no props. She is wearing black mascara and a very light pink lipstick to deem herself as an attractive female. Also, the one eye that is shown makes her look seductive. Her mouth is slightly open to grab the males’ attention, as it makes her look provocative. This tells us that the artist is illustrating herself as a typical electro-pop artist and she is a successful one.

Representation:

The artist is represented as attractive and rebellious as her image is seductive due to only showing one eye and also due to her mouth being open which invites in the male population in to being more interested in the image. The social group of ‘young people’ is represented by her looking like a young typical teenage female as she looks rebellious due to the black dirt on her fingers and the smokey dark eye shadow underneath her eyes.

Audience:

Females who don’t like to abide by rules (rebels) may purchase this CD as instead of their hair being neat, it is messy, and this would not usually be expected from females. Also, teenage girls who may believe that working towards money is of high importance to them may purchase this CD, as they could be influenced by Kesha with her name engraved in gold on her CD cover, suggesting that she is a wealthy music artist.
