CONSTRUCTION FACTS AND FIGURES

Construction began in June 2009 and was completed in August 2011 (in time for the Rugby World Cup)

609 foundation piles support the stadium

Stadium footprint is 31,050 square metres (3.1 hectares or 7.7 acres) — big enough to host major sports and conference events with ease.

Area of ETFE roof is 20,500 square metres

Roof is supported by 5 arches, each with 105 metre span

Maximum external height of main roof is 47 metres (12 storeys)

Internal roof clearance above centre line of pitch is 37 metres (much taller than the highest observed rugby kick of 29.4 metres)

The entire rectangular pitch is 132 metres long by 81 metres wide (big enough for all major sports codes)

4 stands, 5 lounges and 21 corporate suites

12 food & beverage outlets

600 new jobs created during construction; 1000 people employed for major events

Net economic benefit to Otago and Dunedin estimated at $24 million per year

For sportRugby

Field sports such as rugby union, rugby league and football utilize the natural turf playing field, surrounded by 30,000 fans in the four surrounding tiered stands. The large playing area at Forsyth Barr Stadium meets the pitch requirements for major sporting codes

Football / SoccerSoccer is increasing in popularity in the Southern Hemisphere, and is well served by the natural grass pitch and large capacity seating at Forsyth Barr Stadium.

Netball & BasketballNetball and other court sports in tournament mode are catered for using drop-in competition level courts and customised seating layouts. Basketball and other court sports in event mode utilize a relocatable wooden floor.

Exhibition SportsOther large-scale exhibition sporting events such as Monster Trucks or 'Crusty Demons' style motorsports are served with a palletized dirt pitch within the main field, customised seating and additional event lighting.

For ConcertIt’s the perfect venue for major concerts, performances and festivals.

As the largest indoor event venue in New Zealand, we’ve got space

for up to 10,000 fans on the pitch alone plus seating in the stands. And

the incredible transparent roof keeps fans and performers cosy and dry

while retaining all the atmosphere of an outdoor show.

Whether day-time or night-time, large scale rock ‘n’ roll extravaganza or

something more cosy and intimate — Forsyth Barr Stadium is your

place to experience a spectacular show

This roof is made out of ETFE, a transparent polymer

originally developed for the space industry. This incredible

roof technology means you’ll be protected from the wind, rain

and snow while you can still feel the sunlight on your face and

see the stars at evening concerts.

WHAT IS EFTEETFE film is lightweight and can

transmit up to 90% sunlight,

which can reduce the electricity

costs for lighting, heating and

cooling as its insulation

characteristics are similar to

glass

ETFE film can maintain well

transparency and strength for

over 20 years, it is also highly

resistant to fire and heat.

ETFE film is recyclable; once it

has been taken from a structure

it can be recycled back into

useable ETFE product.

Forsyth Barr Stadium is the world’s only permanently covered

stadium to boast a natural turf playing field, designed by leading

architects and incorporating a space-age transparent roof. The roof

let the sun shine in while keeping the rain off our head.

In the South Island, Grayson Engineering accepted the

challenge to deliver excellence with the Forsyth Barr

Stadium in Dunedin.

Tonnage: 3,887

Value: $33-million

The first stadium at this latitude to have living grass under

a fixed roof

The sheer size of the steel members and the need to

conform with the design geometry made it wise to build

extensive jigs in the Grayson workshop, where every

member was trial-fitted before being disassembled, painted

and transported. There were 124 truckloads, with the

heaviest individual piece weighing in excess of 30 tonnes.

The five arch trusses were assembled on the ground as

complete truss modules. A 400-tonne crawler crane was

needed to ‘walk’ each 200-tonne truss into position

before lifting. The top of the arch was 47m and the

critical underside clearance was 37m.

The transparent ETFE roof is supported by five arch

trusses, each with a 105m span. A main truss, 130m in

length and weighing 390 tonnes, supports one end of the

five arch trusses along the southern grandstand, with the

other end of the arch trusses connecting to the top of the

northern stand

Page 15: Analaysis Forsyth barr stadium

On site, the South Stand Primary Truss was assembled

into two leg modules and three truss modules within jigs

located on the pitch. The legs were lifted first and

supported by temporary props. The two end-truss

sections were then lifted and supported on temporary

towers until the connections could be completed.

The middle truss section was then lifted and held by the

cranes until the connections to the two end truss

sections could be completed.

All lifts required planning and collaboration with the

Main Contractor Hawkins Construction and the crane

operators Daniel Smith.
