Day 1 Date Thursday 08 September 2011 Time 08:30 – 16:30 Venue Tatton Hall Tatton Park Knutsford Cheshire WA16 6QN Anaerobic digestion (AD) is an established technology with a bright future, flexible enough to be developed as a waste disposal option or as a source of renewable energy generation, and tailored to almost every individual requirement, large or small. Interest in AD is growing; farmers, food producers, waste management companies and renewable energy organisations are all investing heavily in the future of the technology. In recognising the benefits offered by AD, the Government has put its support behind the technology and has recently produced an “AD Strategy and Action Plan”, setting out a vision for AD development in the UK. This event aims to explore the opportunities available to a range of organisations in the North West from the development of AD, raising the profile and understanding of the technology and showcasing a range of industries that can take advantage of this expanding sector. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is an established technology with a bright future, flexible enough to be developed as a waste disposal option or as a source of renewable energy generation, and tailored to almost every individual requirement, large or small.

Day2 - Site Visit, Friday 09 September

As part of the event, Envirolink are offering the opportunity to visit an operational AD facility in one of three sectors; agricultural, horticultural and wastewater/industrial. Further information can be found later in this flyer.

Day 2 - Site Visit

Programme Day 2Friday 09 September

As part of this event, Envirolink Northwest is offering participants the opportunity to visit an operational AD facility to explore further how the technology works. There are three distinct facilities available to visit.

You must register separately to attend one of the below site visits.

Option 1 Farmgen, Carr Farm, Warton, near Preston, Lancashire

The plant is an example of a farm-based AD facility, taking majority agricultural bio-crops as a fuel source.

Sourcing its fuel mostly from crops grown by local famers, this plant aims to generate enough continuous power for more than 1,000 homes whilst also providing a significant boost to the local rural economy.

Option2 United Utilities, Crewe Wastewater Treatment Plants

Based on a waste-water treatment works, this facility is a model of an industrial application for an AD facility.

Crewe wastewater treatment plant is owned and operated by United Utilities Group plc. The plant processes treated sludges. Sludges are passed through a number of processes before being recycled to land. Biogas produced during the digestion phase is used to drive onsite CHP units (550 kW capacity) which can then be used to re-heat the digestion chambers.

Option 3 Biotech Services, Fields Farm, Alderley Edge, Cheshire.

Biotech’s AD facility is operating at a tomato production site and is an example of an application of the technology in horticulture.

Using the organic production waste from the glasshouses, methane is extracted for electricity and heat generation, CO2 is extracted for use in the glasshouses, liquid fertiliser and water produced for the hydroponic system (fertiliser), diverting 2,500 tonnes of waste from landfill.

All visits will be taking place between 09:00 and 13:00 hours on Friday 09 September. Delegates may choose one facility to visit, and will receive further details about their chosen site once registered.

Note: Places on the site visits are strictly limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

To register for your chosen site visit, please email Ian Stephenson on: [email protected] or call 01925 855 755.
