Vision Statement

Sustainable hydrogen and fertilizer production from biomass

Through innovation and research, Anaerobe Systems is developing technology to reliably and rapidly produce hydrogen for biogas applications and organic fertilizers. We are committed to creating a process that can be built at a local level to promote sustainable farming, to reduce transportation costs in waste disposal and energy generation, and to provide economic stimulation for California farmers. With over 40 years of expertise in anaerobic microbiology and engineering, we have the capability to craft a highly efficient fermentation process that can breakdown agricultural waste, produce hydrogen, and return the essential vitamins and nutrients for crop growth back to the farm.

Problem and OpportunityFarming and food processing are critical industries in California, both to feed the population and for economic development. However, agricultural practices have a high demand for fertilizer and water, and processing waste can takes up a substantial amount of land that could otherwise be used for productive farming. By applying microbial biotechnology, not only can we increase the speed of waste processing and reduce the amount of land, but we can also generate valuable products to the State of California, including hydrogen for fuel cells and organic fertilizers.

Benefits of defined anaerobic fermentation

Controlled and optimized: We harness the power of biotechnology by introducing only the best microorganism. We select from bacteria that are found naturally in the environment to break down plant matter and are safe.

Fast and efficient: The conversion from waste to fertilizer and hydrogen takes less than one day, compared with traditional composting methods that can take longer than one month.

Flexible, modular, local: Our process is designed to handle a wide variety of starting biomass. Systems can be built at the site of waste generation, reducing transportation costs.

Conserves water: We have a closed system that recovers all water input in the form of a liquid fertilizer, which can go back to the farms.

Processes agricultural waste: A wide variety of agricultural crop waste, including whole plants can be rapidly disposed of and converted to an organic fertilizer.

Applications for invasive plant species: This method can also be applied to convert invasive plant species, such as water hyacinth and Arundo donax into fertilizer and hydrogen, providing an economic incentive for mechanical clearance.

No release of greenhouse gas: Common approaches of natural decomposition by composting can release the carbon stored in plants as greenhouse gases. Our closed system prevents any release of greenhouse gases.
