STREET- BUSAN- DAY

We see an ASIAN GIRL (mid teens) walking down a busy street

in a Korean city. She is of medium height with long brown

hair. She is no more intimidating than a stuffed animal. Her

name is Yumi.

INT. STORE- CONTINUOUS

Yumi walks into a store and looks through the cards. She

pulls out a card and buys a balloon. She scribbles something

on the card but we do not see it.

EXT. STREET- CONTINUOUS

Yumi walks down the street until she hears her phone ring.

She stops.

YUMI

(on the phone in English)

Is it done? You didn’t do it? We

had a deal! Hello?

Yumi looks angry. She briefly screams but quickly composes

herself. She continues walking to the beach where an older

man sits patiently. Yumi and the man speak in Korean.

EXT. BEACH- BUSAN- SAME TIME

FATHER

Yumi! You made it.

YUMI

Were you worried I wouldn’t show up

Dad?

They have an awkward hug.

FATHER

I wasn’t worried. I knew you would

come.

YUMI

So what did you want to do today?

FATHER

Just being here with you is enough.

They sit awkwardly.

YUMI

How have you been?

The father looks lovingly at his daughter.

FATHER

I have been missing my family. Do

they miss me?

Yumi looks down.

YUMI

Aunt Suna mentions you sometimes.

FATHER

And you?

YUMI

Sometimes.

FATHER

(deep breath)

Um...I know I have not been the

perfect father. I was away for a

long time.

YUMI

You weren’t away. You were in jail.

You’re a criminal. When you say you

were away it makes it sound like

you were traveling.

FATHER

I wasn’t gone by choice.

YUMI

Choice is exactly what led you

there.

EXT: AMERICAN SUBURB: NIGHT

We see two teenagers in dark clothes running towards a small

house. They are each armed with a flashlight. One is tall

with piercings. This is Joe. The other is shorter with a

black coat. This is Alex.

JOE

It’s this one. Let’s go.

ALEX

Are you sure it’s here? We can’t

mess this up.

(CONTINUED)

JOE

I know this is the spot.

The sneak up to the house and begin unscrewing the doorknob.

They are able to open the door. They walk in.

ALEX

Where can we find it?

JOE

It’s supposed to be in a drawer in

the kitchen.

ALEX

I can’t believe someone would keep

something so important in a house

like this.

JOE

It’s the perfect hiding place.

EXT: BEACH- BUSAN- CONTINUOUS

FATHER

Have you been dating lately?

YUMI

(sighs)

It’s your birthday so I will be

kind to you today, but don’t try to

ask too many personal questions.

FATHER

I know I don’t deserve your

kindness.

YUMI

So what exactly are we doing here

today. You want to ask for a second

chance right? Why else would you

call me here?

FATHER

I know it’s not a yes or no answer.

I never stopped thinking about you.

I know you haven’t stopped thinking

about me.

YUMI

That’s true but maybe not in the

way you would have hoped.

Alex and Joe are searching through drawers.

Click!

A light comes on. It is an older woman. She is startled.

OLDER WOMAN

Who are you? What are you doing in

here!?

JOE

Shit!

Alex slaps her across the face. She screams. He pushes her

onto the couch.

ALEX

Keep your mouth shut bitch.

JOE

What are you doing!?

ALEX

Did you want her calling the cops?

JOE

We can’t do it like this!

ALEX

(ignoring him)

Listen, I’m going to take my hand

off your mouth and your going to

tell me where the necklace is.

Okay?

She nods. He removes his hand.

OLDER WOMAN

In the closet. Third shelf. It’s in

the safe.

ALEX

What’s the code?

ODLER WOMAN

5578.

The woman is teary eyed.

Joe goes to get the necklace. Alex hits her again.

EXT: BEACH- BUSAN- CONTINUOUS

The father looks emotional as Yumi vents her frustrations.

She yells in English now.

YUMI

(In Perfect English)

You sent me away! Did you think you

were helping me? Keeping me away

from my country and my friends?

The father tries to gain courage.

FATHER

(In Bad English)

I thought if I sent you away you

wouldn’t have to be around me. You

saw what being around me did to

your mother.

YUMI

It killed her. And now you ask me

if I’m dating? Do you think I need

a man to protect me?

FATHER

Is it too much to want my daughter

to be safe?

YUMI

How did that work out for mom?

The father looks at his arm regretfully. He has a gang

tattoo.

INT: AMERICAN SUBURB HOUSE- NIGHT

Joe finds the necklace. He brings it to Alex.

JOE

I found it. Oh my God. It’s

beautiful.

ALEX

Good. What should we do with her?

JOE

(nervously)

Just let her go Alex.

Alex glares at Joe.

ALEX

Are you crazy? She saw our faces.

(CONTINUED)

CONTINUED: 6.

JOE

What are you saying!?

ALEX

You know what I’m saying man.

Alex goes to the kitchen and gets a knife.

JOE

Put that down!

OLDER WOMAN

Please don’t! Please! You can have

the necklace!

JOE

Alex I said put it down!

ALEX

Do you want to go to prison?

JOE

This isn’t what we do!

ALEX

Well we never robbed anyone before

today, so maybe this is what we do.

Alex gets close to the woman but Joe tackles him. They

fight.

As they fight we hear Yumi speaking to her father.

YUMI V.O

You can’t just reset the clock. You

made a decision. You picked a path.

Joe and Alex are still rolling around on the floor.

YUMI V.O

I understand you feel badly about

the way you have lived your life.

Alex is on top of Joe and is holding the knife above his

throat. He is trying to push down but Joe is resisting.

YUMI V.O

You changed your mind too late. Now

you are stuck with the choice you

made.

It look like Joe is done for. Finally Joe pushes Alex off of

him.

(CONTINUED)

CONTINUED: 7.

JOE

Alex, it’s me! You know I won’t

fight you like this. We can’t do

it. Look what we’re doing man!

Alex sees the older woman crying. He walks around holding

his hands on his head in contemplation. Joe is teary eyed.

JOE

C’mon man...

Alex goes up to the woman with the knife.

ALEX

If you EVER tell ANYONE what

happened here tonight I will be

back for you...

She nods.

Joe throws the golden necklace at the woman and they walk

out of the house.

EXT. BEACH- BUSAN- CONTINUOUS

FATHER

(In Korean)

I’m sorry Yumi.

Yumi gets up. She brushes the sand off of her and looks

towards the ocean. She won’t make eye contact with him.

YUMI

(In Korean)

I know you are... And I really wish

that was enough. Happy Birthday

Dad.

Yumi gives her father the card and walks away.

INT. CAR-NIGHT

Joe and Alex are on their way back home.

Joe picks up his phone and makes a phone call. We can’t hear

the other end.

JOE

(on the phone)

No it’s not done...The deal if off.

Joe hangs up the phone and puts it down. He hits the ceiling

in triumph. He smiles.

ALEX

What now?

JOE

Anything.

Joe and Alex drive off to a better life.

EXT. BEACH- BUSAN- DAY

We see the father sitting on the beach holding a balloon and

his card. He opens the card. We zoom in.

"To my loving father, who taught me everything I know."

The father sighs as he sits on the beach alone and watches

the waves.

As we zoom out, The father let’s go of the balloon and let’s

it fly away.

FADE OUT

PART 2

EXT: STREET- SOUTH KOREA - DUSK

Yumi is walking down a run down street. She gets a phone

call.

YUMI

(on the phone)

Yeah? No they didn’t get it. You

don’t get the cash until I get the

necklace! Fine I’ll meet you there.

Let’s take care of this ourselves.

Yumi hangs up the phone. She walks into an old apartment

building.

INT: AMERICAN SUBURB- DAY

Joe and Alex are in a basement. Both look as terrified as

the day they came out of the womb.

ALEX

So I’ll just be the first to say

it. We messed up big time.

JOE

We can get out of it.

(CONTINUED)

ALEX

Did you forget who we’re dealing

with here? She’ll skin us alive

man!

JOE

We have to get off of the radar.

ALEX

There’s no where we can go where

she won’t find us! She probably has

people searching for us right now!

A loud pound on the door is heard.

INT: DIRTY APARTMENT: KOREA- CONTINUOUS

Yumi is searching through piles of garbage and newspapers.

Finally she pulls out an envelope.

She opens it. Inside is bundles of cash. Quickly she seals

the envelope and heads out the door into the night.

INT: AMERICAN APARTMENT: DAY

The knocking is getting louder.

VOICE

Don’t make me have to break in!

That will only make me angrier!

JOE

(whispering)

We have to let him in man.

ALEX

(whispering)

Fine!

Alex opens the door slowly. As soon as it is open a little a

man kicks through the door, sending Alex flying backwards.

The man is large and Russian. He is in his mid 30’s. His

name is PATRICK.

PATRICK

So I take it you have the necklace?

JOE

Who the hell are you!?

PATRICK

My name is Patrick. Yumi wants the

necklace. Give it here boys!

(CONTINUED)

CONTINUED: 10.

ALEX

We don’t have it!

PATRICK

Excuse me?

JOE

He’s telling the truth man! We

didn’t steal it.

Patrick walks around angrily. He kicks over a garbage can.

PATRICK

Do you have any idea what Yumi will

do to us if we can’t get that

necklace back? She’ll burn us

alive!

JOE

We couldn’t get it.

PATRICK

Couldn’t get it? Do you have any

idea how valuable it is?

ALEX

We don’t know the details.

PATRICK

According to Yumi it’s incredibly

valuable and she won’t rest until

she gets it back.

JOE

And how can we do that?

PATRICK

I just have to call in a favor and

you boys are going to help me.

Patrick picks up his phone.

PATRICK

(on the phone)

Eddie? Come to 5th street. Last

house of the right. I’m calling in

my favor.

EXT: DIRTY ROAD- KOREA- NIGHT

Yumi is walking along a dirt road. She has the envelope with

her. She also is carrying a knife in the back of her pants.

She approaches a rundown house. It is a traditional house

with potted plants and moss along the outside.

She knocks on the door. It opens and she goes inside with

the money. Her father has been following her and watches her

go inside.

He stays close behind.

INT: TRADITIONAL HOUSE- KOREA- CONTINUOUS

Inside There are two Korean Gangsters. They are large men

with full body tattoos. They play cards.

GANGSTER 1

Yumi! Welcome back!

YUMI

I’m just here for business.

GANGSTER 2

Okay, then we can skip the small

talk. Give me the envelope.

Yumi walks over and hands the envelope to Gangster 2.

He pours it into the table. Cash falls out as well as a

picture. Gangster 1 picks up the photo. We can’t see it yet.

GANGSTER 2

So what’s the job?

YUMI

Someone is trying to steal

something very valuable from me.

GANGSTER 1

How valuable?

YUMI

That’s none of your concern. The

money is all right here for you. I

need you to stop this guy before he

gets what he is looking for.

GANGSTER 1

He is in the states huh? That’s a

big job but we can pull it off.

YUMI

There is enough cash for plane

tickets. I need you to leave as

soon as you can.

Gangster 1 passes the photo to Gangster 2

GANGSTER 2

We can take care of it.

YUMI

You know what happens if you fail.

The gangster puts the photo down on the table. It is a photo

of Patrick.

INT: CAR- DAY

Joe is driving a truck down the road. Patrick is in the

passenger seat. Alex is in the back. Another man sits next

to Alex. He is tall and thin, (mid 40’s). This is Eddie.

JOE

SO Yumi sent you here to help us?

PATRICK

Help is a strong word. I’m keeping

us all alive.

EDDIE

I would bet my left nut you can’t

do that. Not after what I heard

about this chick.

They pull up to the house from the night before. They are

revealed to be in a white van. Patrick and Eddie get out and

close the door.

PATRICK

(through the window)

You guys stay here until you get

the sign from me.

Patrick puts on his best smile and knocks on the door.

No one answers.

Patrick knocks again louder. The woman peeks her head out

from the side of the door.

OLDER WOMAN

Who are you? Please leave!

PATRICK

My name is Ronald Hervawitz. I’m

from Security Unlimited. We are

aware you had a break in last

night. Can I please speak with you?

OLDER WOMAN

Show me identification.

Eddie takes out an ID card and holds it against the window.

The woman cautiously opens the door. As she does Patrick and

Eddie barge in as usual.

PATRICK

All right lady where’s the

necklace?

OLDER WOMAN

Oh no! No! No!

She tries to run away but trips.

Patrick gets to her quickly.

PATRICK

Don’t make this worse than it has

to be! Just tell me where it is!

OLDER WOMAN

I’ll give it to you! Please just

leave me alone!

Joe and Alex see a neighbor from the car. The neighbor looks

curious. He approaches the house. Joe honks the horn several

times.

PATRICK

Shit! Come with me. Now!

Patrick drags the woman out of the house and into the car.

The neighbor sees.

PATRICK

(to the neighbor)

Get the fuck back! Back off now!

They drive away quickly.

INT: PLANE- DAY- SOME WHERE OVER CHINA

Gangster 1 and Gangster 2 are on the plane drinking whiskey

and eating lunch.

GANGSTER 2

So you never told me how you met

Yumi...

GANGSTER 1

That’s actually an interesting

story! You don’t know about her?

GANGSTER 2

I met her when she was already well

established.

GANGSTER 1

I’m sure you know Yumi’s father was

in the Rattlesnakes...Actually the

founding member.

As the gangster tells his story we see it come to life

before our eyes.

FLASHBACK: Yumi is 9. She is with her father and her mother

in a flea market. Yumi is shopping with her family.

GANGSTER 1 (V.O.)

They say they were at Dong Bo

Market in East Busan. Just an

ordinary day of shopping.

Yumi and her mom are searching through clothes and assorted

items while her dad stands far behind. Her dad looks as if

he is searching for someone.

GANGSTER 1 (V.O.)

I guess her dad figured he could

kill two birds with one stone. Have

a nice family outing...and meet

with Hyung Bo in an inconspicuous

place.

Yumi looks innocent and smiles while holding her mothers

hand.

GANGSTER 1 (V.O)

Hung Bo showed up but not in the

way that her dad expected.

We see A tall Asian man in a suit walk through the flea

market towards the father. This man is HYUNG BO. As he gets

closer we see that a few shoppers are not as they seem. They

turn around with guns.

GANGSTER 1 (V.O.)

Hyung Bo and his gang tried to take

out Yumi’s dad. Her dad managed to

take most of them out. The police

did the rest of the work.

CONTINUED: 15.

We see Yumi’s mother cover Yumi to protect her from the

bullets. Yumi moves and her mothers bullet ridden corpse

falls to the ground. Yumi is covered in blood. She watches

her father be taken to jail.

END FLASHBACK

GANSGTER 2

Holy shit.

GANGSTER 1

Yeah holy shit is right.

GANGSTER 2

Is it true all the Rattlesnakes are

dead?

GANGSTER 1

Yumi’s father disbanded the gang

when he went to prison. I hear

there are a few left though.

GANGSTER 2

Where are they?

GANGSTER 1

No one knows. Now shut up and

focus. if we don’t do this right

she’s going to eat us alive.

INT: APARTMENT- DAY- CONTINUOUS

Patrick, Eddie, Joe and Alex are trying to figure out what

to do with the old woman.

ALEX

Well now what?

JOE

She told us where it was last

night.

EDDIE

I would bet my left nut that it’s

not there anymore.

PATRICK

You use that expression so much

that it’s become meaningless.

EDDIE

It’s not meaningless. I will

literally bet you my left nut this

EDDIE (cont’d)ain’t gonna work out. We need to

get it from the house.

PATRICK

We can’t go back to the house. The

cops are probably already there.

She has to go get it.

The older woman looks around nervously.

OLDER WOMAN

What do you expect me to tell the

police?

JOE

Listen...Just tell them there was a

misunderstanding. You get us the

necklace and this goes away

forever.

OLDER WOMAN

Fine!

PATRICK

I don’t think you understand what

is at stake here. If you betray us

you’re gonna get killed. No way

around it.

EXT: OLD WOMANS HOUSE- DUSK

The old woman walks towards here house. There is a police

car outside.

POLICE OFFICER

Maam! Are you alright? Where have

you been.

OLDER WOMAN

Oh I’ve been fine. It’s a long

story. Please come in and I’ll tell

you everything.

EXT: OLD WOMANS NEIGHBORHOOD- NIGHT

The gangsters are in a car and watching the womans house.

Finally the old woman emerges and walks down the road. She

walks into a car.

The car drives away and the gangsters follow.

INT: APARMENT- NIGHT

CONTINUED: 17.

Patrick and Eddie get out from the car. They pull the old

woman out with them. Joe opens the door to the apartment and

they walk inside.

EDDIE

Alright give us the necklace.

The old woman gives them the necklace.

OLD WOMAN

Why do you all need this so badly?

How did you even know I had it?

Eddie ignores her. He holds the shiny necklace to the light.

Is has green and purple jewels on the outside. It glows like

a bright star.

EDDIE

(mesmorized)

It’s beautiful.

PATRICK

Alright well give it here.

Eddie looks conflicted.

Alex and Joe look around awkwardly.

PATRICK

Eddie stop being a knucklehead.

Give me the necklace.

EDDIE

I don’t get why I have to just give

it to you...

PATRICK

What? We had a plan. You owed me a

favor remember?

Eddie’s gaze is fixiated by the necklace.

EDDIE

I know but...This reaches far

beyond a favor.

PATRICK

Eddie don’t do something you’re

going to regret here.

Eddie eyes a gun on the table.

PATRICK

Eddie I’m way faster than you.

Eddie keeps staring at the gun. He looks at the necklace and

then back at the gun.

He jumps for the gun but Patrick grabs it first. Patrick

shoots Eddie in his nuts. Eddie falls to the ground.

Patrick picks up the necklace and puts it in his pocket.

Eddie is in pain.

PATRICK

Hey Eddie! I bet you you’re left

nut that I’m gonna kill you right

now.

Patrick fires three shots into Eddie’s chest.

The door flies open and the two Korean Gangsters bust in.

GANGSTER 1

Get on the ground! Now!

GANGSTER 2

You heard him! Do it!

ALEX

What’s going on!?

Joe calmly lies on the ground.

JOE

I knew you would come for us...

EXT: EMPTY FARM- KOREA- SUNRISE

Yumi stands in the middle of a field. The sun rises as Yumi

stands stoicly, waiting.

Suddenly a trail of dust appears as a car pulls up. The two

gangsters come out of the car.

YUMI

You’ve been gone 5 days.

Gangster 1 brushes himself off.

GANGSTER 1

Some of that is the time

difference.

(CONTINUED)

CONTINUED: 19.

YUMI

Do you have the necklace?

GANGSTER 2

About that...

GANGSTER 1

We’ve seen the necklace. We think

maybe you aren’t paying us enough.

YUMI

Now is not the time to be greedy,

GANGSTER 1

It actually seems like this is a

fantastic time to be greedy. I

brought you some presents!

Gangster 2 goes to the car and opens the door. He pulls out

Joe, Alex and the old woman. They are blindfolded and have

their hands tied.

Yumi looks distraught.

YUMI

Why would you bring them here!?

This wasn’t part of the

arrangement!

GANGSTER 1

We thought you would be pleased!

YUMI

I didn’t ask for all of this. I

asked for the necklace.

OLDER WOMAN

(to herself)

I know that voice...

GANGSTER 2

If you don’t like our present then

maybe it’s time to change our

arrangement.

Both of the gangsters take out their guns.

YUMI

I told you not to get greedy.

Three Gangsters walk out of the barn. They have guns and

clearly work for Yumi. They have rattlesnake tattoos. They

are the last three members. They work for Yumi now.

CONTINUED: 20.

INT: DIRTY APARTMENT- CONTINUOUS

Yumi’s Father is searching through his messy apartment.

Finally he finds what he is looking for. It is an old

machine gun. He blows the dust off it. He checks the

magazine. Still loaded.

EXT: FARM- CONTINUOUS

The gangsters are all looking at one another.

YUMI

We don’t need to do this...Just

give me the necklace and take the

money. There is more than enough

cash.

GANGSTER 1

Maybe we will keep both!

Gangster 1 looks over to Yumi’s gangsters.

GANGSTER 1

(to the others)

To all of you protecting this

bitch... We have the necklace! Get

this bitch and we’ll split it with

you!

Yumi’s three gangsters look conflicted.

YUMI

Don’t listen to him. He doesn’t

know what he’s talking about.

GANGSTER 2

We can all be rich together! Let’s

get rid of this horrible little

girl!

Gangster 2 walks towards Yumi and one of Yumi’s gangsters

fires. The bullet goes through Gangster 2’s head. POW! He

falls to the ground dead.

Gangster 1 fires his pistol several times. He hits the

ground near Yumi but also hits one of her Gangsters in the

chest. He falls down.

It is a firefight. Gangster 1 hides behind a shed and shoots

over a bale of hay. The other gangsters shoot as well.

It is chaos. No one is safe. Joe, Alex and the old woman are

on the ground, still blindfolded. Joe tries to get his hands

untied.

(CONTINUED)

CONTINUED: 21.

Yumi is hiding for cover. No side cares if she is alive. It

is a fight for the necklace now.

Suddenly a car pulls up. Out of the car comes Yumi’s father.

He takes his machine gun and fires wildly at the remaining

gangsters.

One of the gangsters shoots him in the arm but he keeps

firing. POW! He is shot in the shoulder but he keeps

shooting! All the gangsters are dead. He falls to the

ground.

YUMI

Dad!

She runs to her father and holds him up.

FATHER

I’m alright.

YUMI

How did you know I was here?

FATHER

A father always knows...

Joe has managed to undo his ropes. He takes off his

blindfold and helps Alex and the old woman undo theirs also.

JOE

Where are we?

Yumi stands up.

YUMI

Daegu, South Korea.

Joe and Alex look stunned when they see Yumi.

ALEX

You look so grown up.

The old woman stands up.

OLD WOMAN

Yumi...

The father is standing on his own now.

FATHER

Who are these people?

(CONTINUED)

CONTINUED: 22.

YUMI

This is Mrs.Adams...She was my

foster mother. This is Joe and

Alex. They were my friends back in

America.

FATHER

(awkwardly)

Nice to meet you.

OLD WOMAN

Why didn’t you just tell me you

wanted the necklace. I was holding

onto it for you all these years...

YUMI

I didn’t want to cause you trouble

by contacting you. I’m sure the

police read your mail and listen to

your phone calls. This plan didn’t

work out much better.

JOE

What do we do now?

Yumi picks up the briefcase and gives it to Joe.

YUMI

There is more than enough money in

there to compensate you all for

this trouble.

OLD WOMAN

What are you going to do?

YUMI

Don’t worry about me. Go back to

America. Forget about all of this.

The car keys are still in there.

Joe, Alex and Mrs. Adams head back to the car they came in.

Joe turns around.

JOE

Yumi...I have to know...How much is

that necklace worth? Just tell me

please.

Alex and Mrs.Adams also look extremely curious.

Yumi looks at Joe and then turns around. She puts her father

in the other car. She drives away.

CONTINUED: 23.

INT: CAR- NIGHT

As Yumi drives away from the carnage her father puts his

hand on hers.

They arrive at the fathers house. Yumi helps her father out

of the car and into the house. She has the necklace around

her neck. She holds it tight.

INT: HOUSE- CONTINUOUS

Yumi puts her father on the couch and helps bandage him. She

goes through his drawers and finds a hammer.

She puts her necklace down on the counter and with one big

SMASH she breaks the necklace into a hundred pieces.

FLASHBACK: INT: FLEA MARKET

Yumi is with her family at the flea market. She is 9 years

old. Yumi is holding both their hands. Suddenly Yumi sees

something that catches her attention. She runs away.

FATHER

Why do we have to come here every

weekend?

MOTHER

Because she loves it here!

FATHER

Every weekend?

MOTHER

If it makes her happy.

The father and mother see Yumi looking at cheap items on a

dirty blanket. In the middle of the blanket is the necklace.

MOTHER

(to owner)

How much is this?

OWNER

$3.00.

MOTHER

We’ll take it.

The mother gives the money to the owner and Yumi grabs the

necklace. Yumi smiles widely. She is incredibly happy.

FATHER

That’s the cheapest looking crap

I’ve ever seen! Look at those tacky

The mother is carefully unscrewing the back of the necklace.

MOTHER

Don’t worry, I won’t break it.

YUMI

I don’t care if you break it. Dad

says it’s ugly.

MOTHER

I’m going to make it nicer for you.

The mother bends down to Yumi’s level. She shows Yumi the

necklace.

MOTHER

See here? Inside there is a picture

of our family. This picture makes

it the most special one in the

world! No other necklace has a

picture of us in it. When you look

at this necklace I want you to

remember that we all love you very

much okay? Everyone just wants you

to be happy.

Yumi smiles and takes the necklace from her mother.

Yumi stares at the hundreds of broken pieces. She pulls out

the tiny photo from the broken plastic and cheap metal.

She looks at it and smiles.

The father tries to stand up.
