An Overview of The Used Car Market in India ‐‐Initiative by Team CARS24.com

Automobiles form a very important constituent for the modern Indian families, with the majority customers looking for an economical, value‐for money vehicle. The automobile market has been divided into the used‐car segment and the new‐car segment.  India’s automobile industry is one of the fastest growing in the world and it is already the

sixth largest globally. According to a SIAM (Society of Indian Automobile Manufactures) report, annual car sales could reach 5 million vehicles by 2015 and more than 9 million vehicles by 2020.

The used‐car market in India has been dominated by a majority of unorganized players who are street smart self‐appointed car dealers, road‐side mechanics who wish earn quick money by being middle‐men and the car‐owners themselves who move the vehicle around the family without knowing or getting the True Value of the car. The word of mouth was considered the most valued opinion and the business ran on blind faith. Along with this, there were no major brands to take control and provide direction to the market.  Besides, the growing organised used‐car market has also seen a positive growth factor in the market. Driven by the above factors, the used‐cars market is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 16% during 2013‐2017.   FAST‐GROWING PRE‐OWNED CAR MARKET  The ‘Circle of Trust’ way of unorganized sale of cars and lack of brands stunted the growth of the used car industry largely. With the recent addition of new brands, the industry growth has been put on the fast track which had been sluggish because of the following reasons:

Page 2: An Overview of The Used Car Market in India

 ● Accountability for sale or purchase of the used car ‐ The documentation of the vehicle

is always considered as an add‐on cost for either parties and is never taken seriously.

Sometimes the sale of the car is completed but the transfer never happens. This leads to

legal problems for the initial seller in case the vehicle meets with an accident.

● Regulation and uniformity of prices ‐ The True Value of the vehicle is never known

without thorough market research. The buyer wants the vehicle at the lowest cost

whereas the seller wants the highest price for his vehicle. The involvement of the

middlemen increases the final value of the car with the buyer and seller both losing out

on valuable money which could have been saved.

● When buying the vehicle from the unorganized market, the condition of the vehicle

remains the biggest reason of concern. Laymen buyers are not well equipped with the

detailed checking of parts like the engine making them completely dependent on the

word of the seller or the local mechanic.

Transparency remains the biggest concern as many times buyers are not genuine or

tout, middle‐men looking for superfast money.

The Organised Market ‐ The entry of trusted brands with proper documentation of the entire

process has clearly cleared the major concerns of the consumers paving way for the rapid

growth of the industry. The advantage clearly is ‐

● Complete transparency in the entire deal.

● Professional, detailed approach towards the transaction.

● Hassle‐free transactions as the transfer of the RC and other documentation are well

taken care of.

● The cash‐flow of the transaction is instant. The consumer does not have to wait for the

middle‐man to sell the car before he can monetize his sale.

● Stringent Checklist to assess the vehicle physically and its technical operations with the

accessories to provide a fair and true valuation of the vehicle.

● Major organised brands provide added warranties, accessories and many other offers

on the vehicle along with the finance options, very similar to the new‐car market.

The technological advancement and consumer awareness to various forums through organized brands helped the industry grow at a faster pace.

Page 3: An Overview of The Used Car Market in India

● Improved quality and better maintenance ‐ Due to technological advancements, the quality and durability of modern cars is higher. The life of the vehicles has increased close to 1,50,000 kms overall In comparison to 70,000 kms a decade ago. A modern used vehicle having clocked 50,000 on the odometer is still considered fit for use.

● Internet access ‐ Access to a larger audience and forum through the internet, buyers and sellers have adequate information regarding the value of the vehicle. This has drastically reduced the word‐of‐mouth mode of advertisement, also providing a ready market‐place for organized players to tap in.

● Expansion of organised used car players ‐ The used cars market has benefited from fair deals, extended warranties, better retail network, credibility, transparency, added customer service and easy availability of finances. Cars24 provides an assurance that all cars sold through its centers are bought by the right people. Hence, both the buyer and seller are assured of their investment.

With the increase in the trust factor and growth of the organised industry, the Indian consumer finds a trusted economical option for a vehicle in the used car market. The investment by the consumer fetches him an upgraded product of a larger segment from the used‐car market instead of a small segment new car. With the cycle of change shortening down to 3‐5 years from an initial 7 years, a low maintenance, high resale value used car has become one of the most sought after product in the market.   It is just 8 months that Nivedita has graduated from her management college and is working on her own startup. While she wants to upgrade from her Activa to a 4‐wheeler; she has little options to spend > Rs. 6 Lakhs on a new i20. Instead she chooses to buy a second hand Hyundai i20 within 50% of the money that she would have spent on the new model otherwise. While Nivedita would have been hesitated to make a similar decision 5 years back; today the marketplace is changing quite dynamically to help her choose wisely.  CURRENT STATE OF USED CAR MARKET IN INDIA  The current organized market in India is on the highway of growth. The increase in fuel prices, duties and other formalities with increase in demand for luxury has pushed the consumer to look at the used‐car market.   At the launch of Mercedes‐Benz India’s pre‐owned car business brand recently, company Managing Director and CEO Eberhard Kern said the market had grown 39 per cent in the January‐September 2014 period, and sold more than 1,700 units in 2014. “For every 100 new cars sold in India, 110 pre‐owned cars are sold. In the US, it is four times while in Germany it is 2.2 times,’’ he said.

The domestic used car market is growing at 15 percent and expected to double in the next four years. India has 15,000 used car dealers, of which less than 1,000 are organised. Globally, it is

Page 4: An Overview of The Used Car Market in India

largely unorganised. As with the luxury car segment, which accounts for only around 3 per cent of total car sales, used luxury car sales account for a fraction of the total with entry level cars dominating.

With the economy slowing and sales numbers dipping, the used‐car market is a large marketplace for the organized brands to tap and grow into.  THE FUTURE OF THE USED CAR MARKET   “The used car market in India is expected to grow by a CAGR of 20 percent in the next five years, with the organised sector playing a big role in this growth story” quoted by Mr. Ratan Tata at the Auto‐Expo 2015.
