Equity Markets Round Up: January 2020
• DevelopedmarketequitieswerevirtuallyflatduringJanuaryoutperformingEMequity.TheMSCIEM (USD) indexwasdown4.7%duringthemonth.RisinggeopoliticaltensionsbetweenUSandIranwereovershadowedbypositivenews on US-China trade talks with the signing of Phase One trade deal though it is likely to be more of a ceasefire thanalongtermsolution.However,gainsinthefirsthalfofthemonthwereparedinthesecondhalfonconcernsabouttheimpactofthecoronavirusonglobalgrowth.TheWHOhascalledtheoutbreakaglobalhealthemergencyandtheChinesegovernmentextendedthenewyearholidayinsomeregions.Thebruntofthisdisruptionwasbornebycommoditieswhichweredownsubstantially.Crudeoil(Brent)wasdownnearly12%duringthemonthwhiletheLondonMetalIndexofsixmajorhardcommoditieswasdown7.5%.
• IndianequitieswererelativelyresilientduringthemonthwiththeNiftyindexdownonly1%.TheMidcapandsmallcapindicesoutperformedtheNifty indexsubstantially.Onatrailing3-monthand6-monthbasis,theseindicesaredoingsubstantiallybetterthanthelargecapindices.ThemonthhoweverwasavolatilemonthwiththeIndiaVolatilityindex(basedonNSE50)upnearly50%.Intermsofflows,FPIflowswerepositivefifthmonthinarow(atRs.12,123crores)andMutualfundflows,thoughpositive,weremoremutedatRs.1,053crores.
• Themarketswentintothebudgetwithexpectationsofapickupininfrastructurespendtoreviveinvestment,cutintaxestoincreaseconsumption,andsomesortofsupportfortherealestatesectorandHFCs/NBFCs.Giventhefiscalsituationandweakrevenuegrowth,theFMhadatoughasktomeetexpectationsofmarketparticipants.
• Thetaxcutsinthebudgetwillhelppersonsinthelowertaxbracketandpossiblyleadtomoredisposableincomewiththem.Giventhetightfiscalsituation,andtheFM’sdecisiontomovetoalowerfiscaldeficittargetforFY21,growthin infrastructurespendinghasbeenmoderate.ThedecisiontoscrapDDTwillhelpasectionoftaxpayersandwillespeciallybeseenaspositivebyMNCswhoseparentcompanieswereunabletoclaimoffsetofDDTpaidhere.Intermsofestimates,thebudgethasbeenreasonableinestimatinga10%nominalGDPgrowthforFY21andtaxrevenuesbroadlyinline.WhilethedisinvestmenttargetofRs210,000croreslookshigh,giventhenamesbeingtalkedaboutviz.BPCL,AirIndia,Concoretc.andpartdisinvestmentinLIC,itmaybepossibletohitthetarget.

• Wehavebeensayingthatweexpectaruralrecoveryledbyagoodrabicrop,betterpricesofagriculturalcommodities,and the government’s continued focus on the rural economy.While numbers for auto sales and some consumercompaniesremaintepid,weexpectabroaderrecoveryinthesecondhalfofCY2020.
• However,giventhevaluationsinthemarket,weexpectthisyeartobeamoderateyearforreturnswithstockselectionbeingakeydeterminantofreturns.

CDyieldswerestableonbackofamplebankingsystemliquidity.Longtermcorporatebondyieldsroseduetosupplyinthe10yearsegmentwhileshorttermgiltyieldsroseaswell.
• UnionBudgetwasreleasedon1stFeb.RE(RevisedEstimates)forFY20Fiscaldeficitisat3.8%ascomparedtoBE(BudgetedEstimate)of3.3%andforFY21itwaspeggedat3.5%.Forthedebtmarkettherewasapositivereliefasnoextraborrowingwasannouncedfor remainingperiodofFY2020.ForFY2021,theGrossborrowing ispeggedatRs7.8 lakhcrorewhichexcludesRs30,000crofproposedbuybackandnetborrowingatRs5.44lakhcrores. It isestimatedtheGovernmentwillconductswitches/conversiontothetuneofRs2.7lakhcroresnextyear.
• Duringthemonth,RBIconductedswitchoperationsbyofferingtosell2020and2021giltsandbuythetenyearbenchmarkgiltandothermediumtermgiltsbywayoftwoauctions.CumulativelyRs20000crwasboughtbackandRs12950crof2020/21giltsweresold.ThisledtoanetliquidityinjectionofRs7050cr.
• DuringthemonthGoIalsoconductedswitchoperationsbybuyingback2020maturingsecuritiesandissuinglongerdatedsecuritieswithRBIworthRs41,920crFV.SubsequentlyGoIalsodidconversionwiththemarketbybuyingback2020securitiesandissuingtenyrbenchmarkand2024securities.Thisamountwasapprox.Rs13,260cr.
• India'sfiscaldeficitfortheApril-December2019periodcameinat`9.31-lakhcrore,whichisabout132percentofthefiscalyear 2019-20 target of `7.04- lakh crore, reflecting lower than budgeted tax revenue collections and front loaded govtexpenditure.ThetightliquiditypositionofthegovernmentwasalsoevidencedbytheCMBissuancetotallingRs90,000crworth(includingtheRs30,000crworthannouncedinDecandpayoutinJanuary).ThisCMBissuancewasmainreasonfortheslightuptickinshorttermTbillsasitaddedtooverallTbillsupply.
