Continued from front page

Considering the new season is approaching, I asked Bryan if there are any new regulations in place trappers should be aware of. Though he isn’t aware of anything new, he did point out there are a couple of changes that have taken place within the last few years that are still confusing to some folks. He went on to explain that the two-piece locks (cam-locks) are still legal in Virginia on snares set with the TOP of the loop 12" or lower. You only need a one-piece lock if you're going to be setting the snare with the TOP of the loop between 12" and 24" off the ground. It’s the same with breakaways and deer stops - they're only mandatory on snares set with the top of the loop between 12" and 24". He feels this is one that the VTA needs to work on. A cam-lock is no more, and no less, deadly than a one-piece lock, it just operates slightly differently. The other somewhat recent change he wanted to address is the carcass law. Make sure your sets are AT LEAST 50 feet from any exposed (visible from the air) carcass. This isn't always easy to do, and things can change. He explained last season he made a set in a pasture, when he checked it the next day a cow had gone down and died 45 feet from his set! He urges you to check the area around your set as best you can and continue to be aware. If there is something that is questionable, cover it with leaves, grass, hay, cedar branches, etc. THEN TAKE A PICTURE of what you did. If you can't cover it, move your set or move the carcass.

Many of you over the years have attended conventions or rendezvous around the country. You’ve seen the end results of the time the planners put in to make it enjoyable for those in attendance. Often, the preplanning is overlooked. It’s no secret how much time and energy Bryan put into the planning and preparation for the Fur Takers of America Rendezvous back in June. This is an event attended by outdoorsman from all over the country and was no small undertaking. When asked how it came to be that the Virginia Trappers Association was chosen to host the event, Bryan said Travis Bandy has worked for several years to get Virginia selected to host. A group representing the VTA and the FTA worked together in choosing the Rockingham County Fairgrounds as the venue, which is right in Bryan’s back yard, and that’s how he got involved. An event this size absolutely needed its own logo and the concept for “Looking Back Down the Trail” was also from Travis. He and Bryan commissioned Sharon Davis to do the final artwork. It’s been said that the FTA-VTA Convention was a great success. Some have said that it was the best convention they had ever been to.

Bryan says the rendezvous was a tremendous success, and that success was due to the hard work of an amazing group of volunteers. There were so many people helping that he isn’t going to name names because he says he’ll surely leave someone out. Adding to that he said it was really an amazing thing for him to see all the people that turned out to help. It was his honor for him to be among them. To all of them, he wants to say THANK YOU for a job well done!

In closing, I’d like to thank Bryan for his time and allowing me to try something new for the newsletter. It was my pleasure to put this together and I hope you all enjoyed it. I

wish you all tight chains in the coming season and look forward to seeing your pictures and posts on our Facebook page. You never know; I may use it in a future issue. JP

Trapping Truck Inspiration from the FTA-VTA Rendezvous “Thanks to the VTA and FTA for the great show. It was nice to meet other members and vendors that I deal with. Finding new vendors that have the products I need was a plus, too. I also enjoyed being in the trapping truck contest and finishing first”. -Jeff Talley
