WHAT WILL WE COVER IN THIS SESSION

What is Social Entrepreneurship ?

Examples of Social Entrepreneurship

Qualities of a Social Entrepreneur

The 4 Ps of Social Entrepreneurship

How we could build a culture of Social Entrepreneurship on this campus and across Indian universities?

Through group activities using films, case studies, role-play, brainstorming, question timeand looking at mistakes !

A good place to start

What do you want from a job ?

SE

Is it a calling? A way of viewing all you do ? Can it be for a season?

Can you combine lots of things and still call yourself a Social Entreprenuer ?

Social entrepreneurs are individuals with innovative solutions to society's most pressing social problems.

They are ambitious and persistent, tackling major social issues and offering new ideas for wide-scale change.

But this is Personal

Someone who works in an entrepreneurial manner, but for public or social benefit rather than to make money.

It can be • very hard • lonely • scary • and you will fall and make mistakes, but.... the view from the top is amazing !

Some of the social entrepreneurial projects I’m involved with

1) HILL STATION COMMUNITY CAFE. Providing employment and a vibrant community ‘hub’ 9 staff £200K turnover

www.hillstation.org.uk

2) FACEWORK. Website and training to help yp acquire positive attitudes to work -Videos from ‘Pushed out Learners’

www.facework.today

3) ASHA TRUST Sri Lanka. I’m a Trustee of a small charity which has built a centre to provide training for local people (£35K raised and we take UK students to visit and learn)

On a scale of 1- 10 rank yourself as to how Knowledgeable you are about Social

Entreprenuership ?

concept

“I already run my own Social

Enterprise”

Teach a man to fish and he has food for a lifetime

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day

"Social entrepreneurs are not content just to give a fish or teach how to fish.

They will not rest until they have revolutionized the fishing industry.”

Bill Drayton

Lasting Change Making

Societal change

What social project would you run if someone gave you 100,000 ?

Use the post it note to state the name of your project and it’s primary aim

Who could you work with ?

Could this idea be replicated ?

Where are you going to start ?

Turn to your neighbour and talk

• What’s your reaction to this film ?

• What difference has Veronika made?

• Do you think this example could be replicated ?

• What do people need in your community ?

“A coat is just a band aid for a systemic issue”

“Designing something which people actually need”

Passionate

Practical

My 3 Ps of being a SE. You have to be:

PersistentThere are others but this is a good place to start !

Passionate

Practical

Persistent

Let’s look at these 3 things in greater detail Are you ‘possessed by this idea and can you communicate

this to others?

Are you resourceful, innovative and

creative ?

Are you prepared to make mistakes and keep saying, “it can be done”?

Passionate

Practical

Persistent

BREAK INTO 3 GROUPS TO LOOK AT THESE 3 AREAS ?

Passion

1.How did you discover your passion ?2 Who else shares this passion where you live?3 What could you do with your passion ?

Practical

1. How do you really know if you are good at something ?

2. How do you improve your practical skills?

3. How can you find people who can help you do what you

are not good at ?

Persistent

1.How do you become resilient? 2.Who do you know who can provide support

when things are tough ? 3.How will you feel if you fail at first ?

WHAT ARE YOUR 3 TOP TIPS TO SHARE TO EVERYONE

Role Play

You are to be interviewed by your bank manager for a loan of 100,000 rupees for your social Enterprise plan – are you able to answer the questions ?

• We need a volunteer for the bank manager, and the social Entrepreneur

• The rest of the group – listen very carefully – what questions do you think the bank manager will ask ?

• Will the Social Entrepreneur be ready ?

• If you were the bank manager would you give them a loan?

How do we fund a social enterprise?

• Turn to your neighbour and come up with 3 different ways in which you can raise money.

• What are the + and the – of each way ?

• What would you find the easiest and the most challenging ?

From SSE training on Social Entrepreneurs

A final P = Professionalism

As you plan your Social Enterprise you will need

A clear business plan A clear fundraising and income generation

programme A cash flow and risk analysis An appropriate structure and governance A board of directors, trustees or advisors A system of being accountable, transparent and

ethical in all you do !

But that’s the next workshop ...

Is there a culture of ‘fear of failure’ in India ?

“It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might has well not have lived at all, in which case you have failed by default”.

J. K. Rowling

How could we build a culture of Social Entrepreneurship on campus?
