Founded in 1981, the AAP Section on Emergency Medicine (SOEM) is comprised of over 1,000 members with a special interest in issues related to the treatment and care of pediatric cases in the emergency department. The SOEM was formed to improve the care of infants, children, adolescents, and young adults with acute emergency medical problems by stimulating research in the teaching of emergency care for children.

Membership is open to Fellows of the AAP and approved Section Affiliates who are actively involved in emergency medicine. Specialty Fellows (individuals not board-certified in pediatrics, but those boarded in EM who have passed the PEM subboards) may apply for AAP and SOEM membership by meeting specified criteria approved by the AAP Board of Directors.

disclosure of Financial Relationships and Resolution of Conflicts of interest

The AAP Policy on Disclosure of Financial Relationships and Resolution of Conflicts of Interest is designed to ensure quality, objective, balanced, and scientifically rigorous AAP CME activities. All individuals in a position to influence and/or control the content of AAP CME activities are required to disclose to the AAP and subsequently to learners that they either have no relevant financial relationships or any financial relationships with the manufacturer(s) of any commercial product(s) and/or provider(s) of commercial services discussed in CME activities. All potential conflicts of interest are identified and resolved prior to an individual’s confirmation of service at an AAP CME activity. Beyond disclosure of financial relationships, AAP CME faculty are required to disclose to the AAP and to learners when they plan to discuss or demonstrate pharmaceuticals and/or medical devices and/or medical or surgical procedures that involve “off-label” use of a device or pharmaceutical. The AAP is committed to providing learners with commercially unbiased CME activities.

The content of this CME activity does not necessarily reflect the views or policies of the AAP.

In the rarified air of the “Mile-High City,” golf balls go 10 percent farther and the sun feels warmer because you’re closer to it, but your coffee is cooler, because water boils at 202 degrees. Located just east of the Rocky Mountains, Denver has a mild, dry, sunny climate with more annual hours of sun than San Diego or Miami Beach. Denver has one of the most exciting and walkable downtowns in America. Within a mile radius, the downtown area has three major sports stadiums, the nation’s second-largest performing arts center, three colleges with 30,000 students, an assortment of art and history museums, a mint producing 10

billion coins a year, a river offering white water rafting, a $100-million aquarium, and 300 restaurants. Denver also has the largest city park system in the nation. There are more than 200 parks within the city and 20,000 acres of parks in the nearby mountains, including the spectacular Red Rocks Amphitheatre. The city has its own buffalo herd and every year plants more than 200,000 flowers in 26 formal flower gardens. The Denver Performing Arts Complex has nine theatres seating 10,000 people, second only to New York’s Lincoln Center. And Denver loves its sports: it is one of only a few cities to have seven professional sports teams. You’ll also find horse racing, a professional rodeo, 90 golf courses, and 850 miles of bike paths. For more information about the area, go to www.denver.org.
