NeTNOrDIcAND huawei get increases its focus

on fibre-opticsThe Get network provides more than 1 million Norwegians with digital TV and broadband services. In recent years, the network has been updated with the latest HFc technology and is now one of the most modern digital TV and broadband networks in europe, featuring a combination of fibre-optics and coax. Get has implemented

the very latest broadband standard – eD 3.0 – throughout the network, and speeds of up to 200 mbps are now being made available to all Get cus-tomers. At the same time, demand for new fibre-optic solutions is increasing – particularly in new build areas. Get has spent the past few years assessing

different fibre-optic technologies. Following thorough evaluation, Get has settled on GPON technology, which the company believes to offer clear advantages over other fibre-optic solutions.

gPon market enjoying explosive growthGPON technology is often referred to as ‘next generation broadband’ and is expected to develop rapidly in the im-mediate future. GPON is what is known as a ’passive network’ that consists of OlT central equipment and ONT access units. According to analysis company Infonetics, Huawei is the global leader in GPON with a 41.6% market share (as of Q4 2010). The NetNordic solution for Get is a turn-key delivery consist-ing of GPON access equipment, system platform and system development, combined with its own NetNordic ZeroTouch™ solution – a transaction engine between business systems and network components.

The agreement has an investment framework of more than NOK 100 million over the coming five years. In addition to Get, the agreement also comprises options for Get and Home-

base’s 35 regional partners that de-liver digital TV and broadband services via different access technologies in Norway. Homebase is a wholly owned subsidiary of Get.

delivers independently of technologyIn recent years, Get has built up a technological platform that allows it to deliver products and services independently of technology – while still providing customers with the same positive experience. With Huawei and NetNordic on the team, Get can continue to develop its IP initiative so that the company can adapt even better to existing infrastructure and customer wishes – and, in particular, provide the best customer experience on the market.

According to AnAlYsis compAnY infonetics, huAwei is the globAl leAder in gpon with A 4 1.6% shAre of the mArket (As of Q4 2010).

›› regional fiber-optic owners have made large investments in fiber-optic networks, often without generating the necessary revenues. By linking the local networks together, Fiber Norge

will establish a modern and redundant network for customers who need to transport large volumes of data across long distances.

a joint ventureATB-Nett, rIKS and Hafslund Telekom initiated the concept where the invited fiber owners are joint owners of Fiber Norge AS. The cooperation is based on a common technical

and commercial platform, but each regional network is still owned by each respective partner. The high-capacity network is already in place in the east-ern and southern regions of Norway. It is expected that large parts of Norway will be covered during 2012, when more fiber owners join in.

the third alternativeParticipation in Fiber Norway, gives the possibility to compete against the large established players - a competi-tion that each company individually would not have the opportunity to par-ticipate in. The need for data capacity is increasing by more than 60 per cent per year and Fiber Norge is going to capture a share of this growing market. Typical customer segments in-clude health sector, large companies, the public sector, the media sector, service providers and data centres.

creating opportunitiesThe establishment of Fiber Norge in-creases the opportunities for spread-

ing modern data communication services also to more remote areas of Norway, giving them the same access to service providers as central areas. Fiber broadband is also important for the development of the local commu-nity, both for the industry, the public service sector and living conditions.

Fibre-optic channelFiber Norge offers a fibre-optic channel, which is a point-to-point con-nection in the form of wavelengths. A single fiber is divided into different dedicated frequencies, where each frequency corresponds to a colour on the light spectrum. Data is transferred at the speed of light, which means that the service is ideal for companies with need for fast and reliable transfer of data. Following a comprehensive evaluation process, NetNordic was chosen as the supplier of Alcatel-lucent’s DWDm platform, where requirements for op-erational stability and scalability were key selection criteria for Fiber Norge.

›› Alta Kraftlag now has a fully operational triple-play network, enabling multiple ser-vices to be offered over the same network, giving users ultimate choice. Together with the deployment for Pronea and Varanger Kraft, PacketFront’s broadband solution now covers a large part of northern Norway. PacketFront’s partner, NetNordic, has been in charge of the system integration.

The remoteness of the region in Finnmark had previously prevented communities from receiving broadband but PacketFront’s FTTH solution is already transforming the business and leisure potential of the area. Now inhabitants can enjoy greater flexibil-ity – with home working, video conferencing and large scale downloads a reality. Pack-etFront’s scaleable technology will enable Alta Kraftlag to extend their networks in the future, offering limitless possibilities in terms of network potential – and enterprise re-generation. The fully automated broad-

band network is enabled by PacketFront’s control and provisioning system BecS, together with its ASr routers.

‹‹It became clear to us that without modern infrastructure, it would become impossible to maximise our economic potential,›› says Per-erik ramstad, ceO of Alta Kraftlag. ‹‹On the one hand we have the physical infrastructure consisting of ASr 5000 access routers, which enable 100 mbit/s access. And on the other hand, there is the simplicity of the BecS system which were major factors in choosing PacketFront to build our network. From the beginning of the six month trial period, which started in April last year, home users and businesses have been benefiting hugely from the ad-vantages of triple play – and because it’s so straightforward to keep the system up and running, operational staff have been kept to the absolute minimum.››

Alta Kraftlag has since 2007 deployed fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) networks, using PacketFront technology. Using both a low cost, high efficiency and high speed fibre-in-the air technique, and underground pipes, the deployments cover large rural areas at the top of Norway, and will benefit many households in the region – giving them true broadband access for the first time.
