Historic British Coins

SILVER SIXPENCE OF QUEEN ELIZABETH I

Queen Elizabeth I was the daughter of Henry VIII and

his second wife, Anne Boleyn, who he executed when

she was less than three years old. Perhaps in reaction

how Elizabeth’s father treated his wives, she never

married and became known as the Virgin Queen. Her

44-year reign from 1558 to 1603 included the formal

reestablishment of the Church of England, the defeat of

the Spanish Armada, the flourishing of English drama

which included William Shakespeare, and a vast expansion in England's seafaring adventurers,

such as Sir Francis Drake. The silver six pence of Queen Elizabeth features her portrait on the

front, and the English arms on the back. It is one of the few English coins of that era to have a

date, which is above the arms. It is an historic coin from an historic era, however the coins were

hand struck and are crude and the portrait tends to be heavily worn and not clear.

Item GB-LIZ6d GREAT BRITAIN ELIZABETH I SIX PENCE 1562-1602 AG-VG $95.00

THE FAMOUS 1797 GEORGE III 2 PENCE CARTWHEEL

In 1797 the government

authorized Matthew Bolton to

strike copper 1 and 2 pence

coins at his Soho mint in

Birmingham. George III is

pictured on the obverse, and

Britannia seated with a small

sailing ship by her feet is on the

reverse. The coins are unusual

in that the inscriptions were

incuse. They contained their

full value of copper, which

meant the coins were big and heavy. The 2 Pence weighed 2 ounces (57 grams) and was 5mm

thick and 40mm in diameter! It was the first British coin struck with a steam coin press and one

of the largest and thickest circulating British coins ever issued. The coins were disliked due to

their awkward size and heavy weight. The Napoleonic Wars caused copper prices to soar and

most of the coins ended up being melted. These coins have moderate rim bumps and minor nicks

as is expected on such big, heavy pieces. It is an historic coin that is popular with collectors.

Item GB-2d GREAT BRITAIN 2 PENCE 1797 KM619 Fine-rim bumps .................... $79.00

SILVER SIX PENCE OF QUEEN VICTORIA

Victoria ascended to the throne of the United Kingdom at age

18 in 1837 upon the death her Uncle, William IV. She was one

of the only living legitimate descendants of her grandfather,

George III. Her reaction to the licentiousness of the Georgian

era brought on Victorian Morality which emphasized sexual

restraint, low tolerance of crime, and a strict code of social conduct. She married her first cousin,

Albert of Saxe-Coburg Gotha in 1840. Though she hated being pregnant, viewed breast feeding

with disgust and thought newborn babies were ugly, she had nine children and 42 grandchildren.

Her long reign was a period of rapid industrial, scientific and military change, political and

cultural reform, and a great expansion of the British Empire. For the first 50 years of her reign

her coins featured a simple, charming portrait of the young Queen. These silver six pence with

the young head of Victoria were struck from 1838 to 1887 in sterling silver and are 19.3mm in

diameter. The reverse includes the royal crown, the denomination within a wreath, and the date.

Item GB-VICT6d GREAT BRITAIN QUEEN VICTORIA 6 PENCE 1838-87 G-F. $17.50

ABBASID PROVINCIAL SILVER COIN OF TABARISTAN

Tabaristan is a region on the southern coast of the Caspian

Sea in what is now Iran. It was one of the last parts of

Persia to fall to the Muslim conquest due to natural

barriers including high mountains, numerous rivers,

swamps and dense forests as well resistive population.

Even after it fell to the Abbasid Caliphate it was virtually

independent and had its own distinctive, non-Muslim style

coinage until about 793AD. The coins were silver 1/2 Dirhams based on the Sassanian Dirham.

The obverse featured a crowned Sassanian style bust. The reverse features a Zoroastrian fire altar

flanked by two attendants. The coins are about 23mm in diameter, are well struck, and have little

or no wear. It is an unusual transitional coin struck by the Muslim Abbasids but retaining the

design of the earlier Zoroastrian Sassanian coinage.

WILDLIFE ON RECTANGULAR COINS OF NEW ZEALAND TERRITORIES

Native wildlife is featured on these unusual unofficial rectangular coins from territories of New

Zealand. The coins are all denominated 10 Dollars and are dated 2017. Queen Elizabeth, the

name of the territory and the date are on the obverse. The silver-planted coins measure 40mm x

25mm and are Proof. They have a mintage of only 150 pieces each.

The Chatham Islands were settled about the 16th

Century by predecessors to the Maoris known as

Moriori. After generations of warfare, the Moriori

created a peaceful society in which bloodshed was

virtually unknown. The islands were named after the

ship HMS Chatham which landed there in 1791 and

claimed the islands for Great Britain. In 1835 a group

of about 900 Maori forced an English captain to take

them to the Chatham Islands. They attacked,

slaughtered and enslaved the Moriori, wiping out most

of the population. Today about 600 people inhabit

the islands. The islands are the breeding grounds to

huge flocks of seabirds and is home to about fifty endemic plants adapted to the islands cold and

windy climate. A Spiny Lobster (Sagmariasus verreauxi), one of the chief exports of the islands

is on the reverse of the coin.

The Solander Islands are a small chain of

uninhabited islands just south of New Zealand. They

were sighted by Captain Cook in 1770 and named

after Dr. Daniel Solander, a Swedish naturalist who

was part of the crew. The islands have had only been

briefly inhabited by shipwrecked or marooned

sailors. It is the home to many rare plants and birds.

The unoffical Solander 10 Dollar coin depicts a

Glaucus marginatus, which is a species of small, blue

sea slugs. They float upside down on the surface of

tropical seas and eat Portuguese man o’ wars.

The Three Kings Islands consists of 13 islands

about 34 miles (55km) northwest of Cape Reinga,

New Zealand. They measure about 1.9 square miles

(4.86 km2). The islands have been uninhabited since

1840. The coin depicts a Phyllorhiza punctate, a

species of jellyfish that is commonly called the

floating bell, Australian spotted jellyfish or the

white-spotted jellyfish. They are an invasive species

having spread from their native habitat around

Australia temperate waters throughout the world.

Each jellyfish can filter as much as 13,000 gallons

(50,000 liters) of seawater per day, ingesting plankton that native species need, as well as ruining

fishing gear and damaging boat intakes.

1949 NAM BO GUERILLA NOTE FOR SOUTHERN VIETNAM

This crude undated 5 Dong note was issued in

1949 by communist Vietnamese forces in

southern Vietnam called the Nam Bo. Because

of the difficulty in communicating and getting

supplies from Ho Chi Minh's forces in the

north, the Nam Bo were authorized to print

their own currency. The notes were printed

under primitive conditions using whatever

supplies could be found, resulting in the notes

coming in a wide variety of shades of colors. By the early 1950's the Nam Bo were largely

defeated by the French. The front of this 122 by 60mm note features the head of Ho Chi Minh

and Montagnard with a rifle hiding in the brush. The back has a crude depiction of farmers with

water buffalo and has legends in Vietnamese, Chinese and Laotian and Cambodian.

FIRST BANKNOTES OF SOUTH VIETNAM

The Republic of Vietnam, more commonly known as South Vietnam, was proclaimed Premier

Ngo Dinh Diem in 1955. He was overwhelmingly confirmed as President in a referendum in

October 1955. He must have been popular. In many districts he received more votes than there

were voters! South Vietnam issued its first banknotes that same month, including these undated

2 and 5 Dong. The violet 2 Dong depicts a fishing boat under sail on the front and thatched

houses surrounded by rice paddies and palm trees on the back. It measures 121.5x65mm. The

reddish-brown 5 Dong depicts a farmer plowing a rice paddy with a water buffalo on the front

and a thatched house next to water on the back. The notes were printed by the Security Banknote

Company of New York, whose name is clearly displayed at the bottom on the back. The

communists used it as propaganda to show that government was actually still under control of the

By 1966 the Vietnam War was not going

well. Over a decade after South Vietnam declared independence, fighting was still going on with

no clear victor. Perhaps in an attempt to reflect in the glories of successful military campaigns in

the past, South Vietnam issued new banknotes depicting historical Vietnamese military heroes.

NEW VENEZUELA INFLATION NOTE

Venezuela introduced a new high denomination 100,000 Bolivares banknote in November 2017

in response to the countries hyperinflation brought on by the governments economic and political

mismanagement. The Simon Bolivar is on the front of the note in a vertical format, and Red

siskin birds are on the back in a horizontal format. The same design was used on the previous

20,000 Bolivares and 100 Bolivares notes, but in a different color. In an effort to disguise the

galloping inflation, the denomination is spelled out in words, rather than the full numerical value.

The notes are apparently in short supply "due to a shortage of paper". The note is expected to be

replaced soon as Venezuela recently announced that it will revalue its currency. Also available is

the previous set of six inflation notes: 500 to 20,000 Bolivares dated 2016.

UNUSUAL UKRAINE COMPENSATION CERTIFICATE

After gaining independence with the

collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991,

Ukraine planned to privatize the many

state-owned enterprises. Instead the

economy went into a tailspin and the

country suffered from a hyperinflation.

To compensate for losses suffered by the

depositors of the State Savings Bank and

State Insurance Company, depositors

were given compensation certificates

which supposedly could be used to

purchase shares in privatized companies. They could also be sold or traded. Many apparently

circulated as money. In reality little privatization took place and most firms remained in the

hands of the state or went to oligarchs with connections to the government. The certificates are

denominated as 1,000,000 Karbovantsiv and measure 172x94mm (about 7"x4").

NAZI GERMAN BONDS

These bonds were issued by Nazi Germany between 1935 and 1942. The 1935 and 1936 bonds

were issued by the Reich Debt Administration and carry a nominal interest rate of 4 1/2%. The

1935 issue bear, the Reich’s eagle from the Weimar Republic, the 1936 have the Nazi Eagle &

Swastika emblem. The 1942 bonds were issued by the state of Thuringia with a nominal interest

rate of 3 1/2%. They have the embossed Nazi eagle & swastika emblem. The bonds measure

approximately 8.5" x 11.75" (21cm x 29.5cm) and have been canceled by a single hole punch.

The bonds have a remarkable history. Having been stored in the impenetrable safe of the

Reichsbank in Berlin, they survived the Second World War unscathed by bombings. Even during

the years of the German Democratic Republic they went largely untouched. In 2015 the German

Ministry of Finance had the bonds sold at auction, with the proceeds going to the Nazi Crimes

Compensation Fund. They are remarkable and historic items of Nazi German economic history.

BEAUTIFUL OLD $1000 RAILROAD BOND - PAYABLE IN 2361AD!

The Westshore Railroad Company ran

from Weehawken, New Jersey, which

is across the Hudson River from New

York City, to Albany and Buffalo. In

1885 the New York Central drove it

into bankruptcy, then leased it back

for 475 years starting January 1, 1886.

The New York Central had the West

Shore issue $50,000,000 of these

Registered bonds at 4% interest, with

the principal not due until the lease ran

out in 2361AD. Talk about thinking

long term! The Westshore Railroad

and the New York Central are long gone. Much of the line is now part of the CSX system. One

side of this large size beautifully engraved $1000 has wonderful old vignette of the Hudson River

that includes sailing ships, steam boats and a train. The other side has an eagle vignette. These

bonds are dated in the 1940's and 1950's and are punch cancelled.

1000 DIFFERENT WORLD COINS DATED BEFORE 1978

WOW! What a deal! 1000 different world coins, all dated before 1978! Nice mix of both

circulated and Uncirculated coins, including some 19th century issues and many scarce issues

and locations which are hard to find today. These lots were assembled by a dealer over 30 years

ago, and have sat in storage ever since. We offered these a few years ago and completely sold

out, however our supplier recently found a few more sets in their warehouse. It would be

difficult and expensive to try to recreate the lot today (which is probably why you don't see offers

for 1000 different coins). It will provide hours of enjoyment sorting and cataloging the wide

variety of world coins. This 1000 different coin lot is great for starting or expanding a collection

or for dealer's stock, and is a wonderful way to introduce kids to collecting world coins.

With the disappearance of the silver dollar in the 1960’s, casinos issued their own dollar tokens
