ANCIENT & MEDIEVAL COINS
AFFORDABLE EARLY ANCIENT SILVER COIN
This is one of the most affordable early ancient silver coins available. It was struck
from about 600BC to 327BC in the area of northern Pakistan and north-eastern
Afghanistan. Some references attribute the coin to the region of Gandhara
Janapada, while others attribute it to Taxila, which was the major city in that region.
One side of the slightly concave coin has the six petaled Taxila "flower" design that
was used on most coins of the region at that time. The other side is blank. The coin is
approximately 12 to 14mm in diameter. It is likely the coins were first struck shortly before the
region was invaded by Persian emperor Darius the Great in 518BC. The coins continued to be
issued under Persian rule, probably until Alexander the Great conquered the region in 327BC.
The coin is denominated as 1/8 Santamanas.

SILVER TETRADRACHMS OF ALEXANDER THE GREAT & SELEUCUS I
As a youth, Alexander was taught by Aristotle.
Upon the assassination of his father in 336BC,
Alexander became the King of Macedonia at age
20. His army quickly conquered the Greek states
and he then set off across Asia. With brilliant
military and political tactics he conquered Egypt
and the Persian Empire. He continued conquering
all in his path. In 326BC he reached India. There,
his weary army mutinied, refusing to go any further. Alexander was forced to return. He died
three years later, after a prolonged banquet and drinking binge. Until his reign, Greek coins did
not show mortals. But Alexander sought to proclaim himself as a God. The coins of Alexander
portray him as Hercules, dressed in a lion's skin. The reverse shows Zeus seated. After the death
of Alexander in 323BC his top generals fought for control of portions of his empire. Seleucus I
Nicator gained control of a vast territory stretching from Anatolia (now Turkey) to Persia to
northwestern India, thus founding the Seleucid Empire. After battles with Chandragupta of the
Mauryan Empire in India they agreed to a peace treaty. Seleucus gave up some territory. In
exchange Chandragupta gave him 500 war elephants, his daughter in marriage, aphrodisiacs and
other gifts He was assassinated in 281BC during his campaign to take Macedonia and Thrace.
Seleucus struck Tetradrachms in the same style as Alexander's, however with the legend
ΣEΛEYKOY (Seleucus) rather than AΛEXANΔΡOY (Alexander) on the reverse.

COIN OF ANCIENT CARTHAGE
Carthage developed from a North-African Phoenician colony in the
8th century BC to a multi-ethnic empire that at its peak included
parts of North Africa, Spain, Sicily, Sardinia and Corsica. This
16mm copper coin of Carthage was struck from about 400 to
350BC. At that time Carthage was a major Mediterranean power
with colonies in what is now Spain and Italy, which would bring it into conflict with Rome.
Their trading ships are believed to have ventured as far north as Brittany in France or as far south
as the Gambia River in Africa. One side of the coin depicts the head of Tanit, the chief deity of
Carthage. The other side features a horse standing in front of a palm tree. Carthage was noted
for raising fine horses and the horse was a symbol of Carthage.

INDO-GREEK SILVER DRACHM OF APOLLODOTUS II
The Indo-Greeks descended from Alexander the Great, who
conquered northern India in 326BC. They were the eastern most
part of Hellenistic culture, ruling the area around Afghanistan,
Pakistan and north-western India. They maintained Greek culture,
religion and language, incorporating it with elements of Indian
culture and language. Apollodotus II was one of the greatest Indo-
Greek kings. During his reign, from about 80 to 65BC he re-established much of the glory and
territory of the Indo-Greek kingdoms. After his death the Indo-Greek kingdom fragmented and
soon disappeared. This silver drachm of Apollodotus II reflects both the Greek and Indian
culture. The obverse depicts the bust of the king with a Greek legend that translates as "Of
Apollodotus the Great, Savior & Father loving King". The reverse depicts Athena Alkidemos
standing and has the legend in Kharoshthi script that translates "Savior King Appolodotus". It is
an attractive and historic ancient silver coin from the farthest reaches of Greek culture.

These 15mm convex silver half denarius depict a male's head facing

known ancient kingdom.

COINS OF KING ARTHUR?
These small, ancient copper coins, called
Barbarous Radiates, are found in hoards in
England. They are crude privately made,
ancient copies of third century Roman coins.
They are not generally regarded as forgeries as
they are smaller than the standard issues. The
designs are based on the Roman Antoninianus
which features the emperor wearing a radiate
crown. Some sources attribute them to the Dark
Ages or the Saxon period, a time when the
legendary King Arthur is said to have ruled. Other sources attribute them to the late third
century, when Britain and Gaul were under the control of their own self-declared emperors.
Either way they are fascinating ancient coins from ancient Britain.

NAPOLEONIC ERA COIN FROM ANGOLA
This large copper 1814 1 Macuta from
the Portuguese colony of Angola
comes from a turbulent period in the
Portugal's history. Angola was
Portugal's largest and wealthiest
colony in Africa. It thrived on
exporting slaves and goods to Brazil,
which was also controlled by
Portugal. Portugal's Queen Maria I
had been declared insane in 1792 and
her son, Joao (John) became Regent.
In 1807 the royal court of Portugal fled to Brazil to escape Napoleon's army. From there they
ruled Portugal's colonial empire. This 36mm copper 1814 1 Makuta was struck in the name of
Joao as Regent. One side bears the arms of Portugal superimposed on the globe. The other side
has the denomination and date. The coin shows little wear, though is weakly struck near the edge
and there may be a bit of minor corrosion. It is a scarce, early African coin

BRITISH EAST INDIA CO. RUPEE STRUCK IN THE NAME OF MUGHAL EMPEROR
This high-grade silver rupee was the last hammered
struck coin by the Bengal Presidency of the British
East India Company. Though struck by the British
East India Company, the coin was struck in the name
of Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II. The coin is dated
both AH1229, which corresponds to 1813AD, and
Year 49 of the reign of Shah Alam II, which
corresponds to 1806. Though Shah Alam II died in
1806, the coin was struck 1813 to 1819, always bearing the same dates. The British East India
Company continued to strike coins in his name as he was well respected and coins in his name
were widely accepted and trusted. By the time the coin was struck the British East India
Company's Bengal Presidency controlled most of north-east India and the Mughal Emperor was
little more than a figurehead. The coin was struck at the Banaras (now called Varanasi) Mint.

1943-44 NAZI GERMAN WINTER RELIEF RATION COUPON
The Winterhilfswerk, or Winter
Relief Fund was a major program
run by the Nazi party in Germany
to help those where were in need
survive the harsh German winters.
Contributions to the fund were
supposedly voluntary, however
failure to contribute was not
tolerated and could cause the loss of one's job or worse. Direct donations to the needy were
strongly discouraged. Those in need were given coupons which could be spent on food, clothing,
fuel, rent, gas or electricity during the winter. The recipient would enter their name and address
on the back of the coupon. The upper right corner would be cut off when the merchant who
received the coupon cashed it at a bank. This cancelled brown 1 Reichmark Winterhilfswerk
coupon was issued for the winter of 1943-1944. A summary of the regulations is on the front and
a list of eligible items on the back. It is a rarely seen World War II item from Nazi Germany.

These 1938 Chinese War bonds include two wonderful vignettes. One showing an aerial
dogfight, the other depicting costal gun emplacements blasting ships offshore. The bonds were
issued by Kwangtung Province of China in March 1938 to raise funds in a desperate attempt to
stop the Japanese invasion of China. By the time the bonds were issued, Japan had already begun
an naval and aerial blockade of Canton (now Guangzhou), the capital of Kwangtung Province
(now Guangzhou). Beijing, Shanghai and the national capital of Nanjing had already fallen to the
Japanese. The bonds were issued in low denominations in order to allow most Chinese to
purchase them. The defense of Canton failed and the city fell to the Japanese in December 1938.
The bonds are labeled in Chinese "27th year Kwangtung Province National Defense Public
Bond" and paid a 4% interest. Only the first three coupons on each bond have been clipped. The
bonds measure approximately 10.5"x12.5" (26x31.5cm) The 5 Dollar bonds are blue, the 10
Dollar bonds are brown. It is an important item issued during the Japanese invasion of China.

COINS OF KURDISTAN
The Kurds are an ethnic group divided between Iraq, Turkey
and Syria. Their attempts to establish a Kurdish nation have
been repeatedly thwarted by outside powers. In 2003, after the
fall of Saddam Hussein in Iraq, overseas Kurdish groups
authorized the issuance of 1 and 10 Dinar coins to be struck for
what they expected would be their new nation. Because of
objections from Turkey, the United States did not allow the
establishment of Kurdistan. The 1 Dinar depicts the most
famous Kurd of all time: Saladin. He is depicted on horseback
carrying a modern Kurdish flag. The 27.4mm coin is struck in
bronze-plated zinc. The 2003 10 Dinar depicts a fallow deer. The 39mm coin is struck in
copper-nickel. A new series was struck in 2006 including 50, 250, 500, 1000 and 2500 Dinars
coins. The brass 50 Dinars pictures a European Grey Heron. The eight-sided copper-nickel 250
Dinars shows a Eurasian Lynx. The copper-nickel 500 Dinar shows a wild goat. The 1000 Dinar
shows Mustafa Barzani, a charismatic Kurdish leader. The 2500 Dinar is an unusual square bi-
metallic coin with a copper outer ring and a brass inner plug. It features an oil refinery in Kirkuk.

liner are depicted. An additional sailing ship is included in the bank seal at the bottom left. The

explorer who is traditionally credited with discovering Guinea, though most modern scholars now
dismiss the claim. Notes of Portuguese Guinea are exceedingly scarce. These two notes together

NEW ZIMBABWE BANKNOTES & OLD ZIMBABWE INFLATION NOTES
Zimbabwe recently released new 10 and 20 Zimbabwe Dollar notes dated 2020 in an attempt to
re-establish their own currency. Zimbabwe had a disastrous bout of hyperinflation between 2007
and 2009, with banknotes denominated as high as 100 Trillion Dollars. Inflation was only
brought under control when Zimbabwe stopped issuing its own currency and switched to using
foreign currencies, including the U.S. Dollar and South African Rand. Recently Zimbabwe
outlawed the use of foreign currency in order to introduce the new Zimbabwe Dollar. The new
currency has been met with widespread skepticism and distrust. The new Zimbabwe Dollar is
supposedly equivalent to a U.S. Dollar, but since it cannot be converted to U.S. Dollars it trades
for far less. Inflation soared to over 700% in May 2020. Like most modern Zimbabwe
banknotes, the front of the new notes pictures
the Chiremba Balancing Rocks. The red 10
Dollar note depicts the Reserve Bank of
Zimbabwe building and a herd of Cape Buffalo
on the back. The blue 20 Dollar note depicts
an elephant and Victoria falls on the back. We
also have examples of the infamous 2008

WHEN A COMPANY RAN A COUNTRY - THE MOZAMBIQUE COMPANY
In 1891 Portugal granted The Mozambique Company a
50-year concession over the central region of
Mozambique. It was given almost complete control
including the right to exploit resources, collect taxes,
issue currency and require the natives to engage in
forced labor. It did not have the financial resources to
develop the territory and often failed to meet its
obligations to Portugal. Most of its income came from taxes and the use of conscripted labor on
its plantations. This 20 Centavos note of The Mozambique Company is punch-cancelled "PAGO
5.11.1942" (PAID November 5, 1942), which was shortly after the Company lost its concession
to run the country. It is a fascinating note from a private company that was given control over a
nation.

SHORT-LIVED GERMAN-AUSTRIA
German-Austria (Deutsch-
Österreich) was a short-lived
republic that was created after
World War I after the collapse of
the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It
claimed sovereignty over the
German speaking portions of the former Hapsburg Empire. The Allies, fearing a resurgence of
German and Austrian power, soon forced the breakup of the newly formed nation, the core of
which became Austria. In a rush to get the needed currency into circulation for this new nation
banknotes of the Austro-Hungarian Empire were overprinted “DEUTSCHÖSTERREICH” in red
ink. The notes were issued from 1919 to 1922, though they still had their original issue date. The
1 Krone dated 1916 has the denomination written in 8 different languages! It measures 113 ×
68 mm. The large 1000 Kronen note is 192 x 128mm (approximately 7.6" x 5").and has the

The town of Lewes, England introduced
their own local currency in 2008 in an
effort to stimulate the local economy and
help the environment (though I am not

environment). Lewes was one of the
early issuers in the local currency
movement which has gained popularity in
recent years. The Lewes Pound was
sanctioned by the town council and is
accepted at par with the English Pound by many merchants in the town. Lewes is a town of
about 18,000 in East Sussex. The front of the 2008 Lewes 10 Pound note depicts the Lewes
Castle and Thomas Paine, who lived in Lewes from 1768 to 1774. After leaving Lewes, Thomas
Paine went to America where his writings helped inspire the American Revolution. The back

RARE KOSOVO BANKNOTES
Kosovo was a province of Serbia that is made up of primarily Muslim ethnic Albanians. In 1998
fighting broke out between Serb armed forces and ethnic Albanian militias that supported
independence or unification with Albania. Atrocities were committed by both sides. United
States and NATO forces finally stepped in to stop the fighting. It was during all this chaos these
unusual banknotes were issued. The notes were printed on obsolete 1992 Macedonian banknotes.
The notes dated April 1, 1999 were issued by the Provisional Bank of the Republic of Kosovo.
The 25, 50 and 100 Dinare notes have a black Albanian double-headed eagle printed on the front.
The 10 Dinare does not have an overprint on the front. The backs of all the notes have legends in
both of the main Albania dialects; Gheg, which is used by the ethnic Albanians in Kosovo, and
Tosk, which is the "official" dialect of Albania. The notes were sold to collectors as fundraisers
for humanitarian efforts in Kosovo. They are the only notes of Kosovo as Kosovo has not yet
issued any coins or notes for circulation. They use Euros or Serbian Dinars.
