June 25th, It was in Christian County, Kentucky that a Randolph County North Carolina native

John Pugh, Jr., (1779-1822), weds one Mary "Polly" Dunnavan(1789-1872), a (proven) daughter

of Rockingham County Virginian Veteran named William Dunnavan. As the data records all of

the Methodist persuasion, as confirmed by its first Bishop Francis Asbury (1745-1816), activities

and travels in Virginia & Kentucky. Interesting enough and a seemingly traditional with the

Dunnavan clan, John, Jr. & Mary Dunnavan Pugh named their third born Francis Asbury Pugh

(1820-1904), after famous Methodist, Bishop Asbury.

Note:

Pugh background: James M. Pugh, Quaker (1665-1724) and Joan Price were married on April

23rd, 1692, at the Radnor Meeting House, Radnor, Delaware County, Pennsylvanian progenitors

came to West Chester County. The Pughs hailed from Meroneth, Monmouthshire, Wales and

Joan's father David and mother Joan Awbery, Quakers were of Brecknockshire, Wales.

Their eldest child Thomas Pugh, (1703-1797), who married his cousin Elizabeth Pugh, removed

his family from Chester County, Pennsylvania like many of the Chester County Quakers down

the Long Gray Trail through Augusta County, Virginia to Sandy Creek, Randolph County

around 1747. Thomas was received into the Cane Creek Friends Meeting in 1756. Thomas was

involved in the North Carolina Regulators from 1768 - 1771. Pugh then was disowned by the

Cane Creek Friends Meeting for taking part in the Battle of Alamance. It was around this time

we find records indicating the Pughs converted to Methodist Religion.

Of the nine known children of Thomas & Elizabeth's, only John Pugh, Senior (1744-1821) with

his wife Elinor Fruit and family journeyed across the Great Smokey mountains to Kentucky.

According to the Pugh family history John Pugh arrived in Christian County, Kentucky about

1800. Pugh's first record appears on the 1803 tax list on Pond River, with later records show

taxes on the Little River.

Note: There were other Fruit and Pugh family marriages.

Much of we know of this Mary Dunavan comes from Pugh lour which is documented in family

manuscripts, newspaper articles and Harvey Pugh's book "Stories and Biographies of Francis

Asbury Pugh and his wife Ruth Jessup.

Page 2: An excerpt from Dunavan Book, II[McWhorter] and whose son William McWhirter, also a Civil War Veteran, lived with his uncle, Francis Asbury Pugh, for many years. General Isaac Pugh,

From the Manuscript of the Pugh Family: Reprinted from the original: August 3, 1938,

penned by one of John Wesley Pugh's children.

"Francis Asbury Pugh, my grandfather was born April 20, 1820, in Christian County, Kentucky,

about 12 miles from Hopkinsville the county seat, and between that town and Elktown [Elkton]

the county seat of Todd County. This is in the southwestern part of the state [KY], not too far

from the Tennessee line, and east of the Cumberland River. Francis Asbury was the son of John

Pugh [Jr.] and Mary ? Donovan II may be mistaken as to the christian name of the mother). The

children of John Pugh, in Linn County Oregon, should be able to give the correct name. Mary

Donovan was born October 1st 1791 in Rockingham County, Virginia the daughter of William ?

Donovan, an officer in the Revolutionary War. (the first name is give from memory and may not

be correct), I have no data as to the name of Mary Donovan's mother."

Note:

It's 23 miles from Elkton going west to Hopkinsville, Kentucky, at the halfway point one would

have to cross the Little River.

We believe this is the William Donovan [Dunnavan 1740-1831] who was a private [serving from

1777 thru 1779] in the 8th Virginia Regiment State Troops Continental Line [aka the German

Regiment] Under the command of Capt David Stephenson (1744-1810) of Rockingham County,

Virginia. These are the only 2 land officers found in the revolution: Major Mathew Dunnivan &

Lt. Richard Donovan

"I have heard my grandfather say [Francis Asbury Pugh] that William Donovan died in

[Christian County] Kentucky, when grandfather was a small boy. He remembered the family

gathered around the death bed of William Donovan, and he believed his grandfather was a very

old man at the of his death [90 yrs.] Grandfather also recalled seeing William Donovan's

sword."

"John Pugh [Jr.], and Mary Donovan were married according to an obituary notice in the family

bible 'About 1818.' I believe there were but two children born to this union J. Washington Pugh

and Francis Asbury Pugh. It is my recollection of the family tradition that William Donovan

served in General Washington's Army, and this might account for the first son of Mary Pugh

being named Washington. Francis Asbury Pugh was named for the great Methodist preacher ,

and appointed by John Wesley the first bishop of the Methodist Church in America. The Pughs

were Methodist and probably had met Bishop Asbury, as he traveled extensively through the

frontier settlement."

Note:

True...

Pvt. William Dunnavan's company under Capt. David Stephenson of the 8th Virginia Regiment

under the Command of Col. Abraham Bowman, was called up by General George Washington

during these campaigns: Battle of Brandywine * Chadds Ford Township, Delaware County,

Pennsylvania (1777) Battle of Germantown * Philadelphia campaign * Germantown,

Pennsylvania (1777) Battle of Monmouth * Monmouth Court House, New Jersey (1778)

Page 3: An excerpt from Dunavan Book, II[McWhorter] and whose son William McWhirter, also a Civil War Veteran, lived with his uncle, Francis Asbury Pugh, for many years. General Isaac Pugh,

"It is my understanding that John Pugh [Jr.] had at least two children by a former marriage.

This branch of the history is subject to correction by Dr. Bert Pugh or his branch of the family.

These two children were Isaac Pugh, afterwards a general in the Civil War, and organizer of the

first G.A.R. post and Sarah or Sallie, who married a man named [John] McWhirter

[McWhorter] and whose son William McWhirter, also a Civil War Veteran, lived with his uncle,

Francis Asbury Pugh, for many years. General Isaac Pugh, the half-brother of Washington and

Francis Asbury settled in Illinois and was one of the founders of city of Decatur, Illinois, where

he resided from the close of the Civil War to his death. John H. Pugh our cousin who lived for

many years at Spokane [WA], was a son of General Isaac Pugh. John and Mary [Donovan]

Pugh moved from Western Kentucky to Iowa [Fayette County, IL] about 1822, when the former

was struck by lightning and killed while working his field".

"Francis Asbury Pugh at the time of his father's death was only a year and a half old. The

mother soon after her husband's death returned with two little boys to the old neighborhood in

[Christian County] Kentucky. Her father, William Donovan, probably lived there, since Francis

Asbury remembered him and the scene at his death bed".

"Old records in the office of the recorder of deeds at Hopkinsville, unless they have been

destroyed by fire, might disclose the name of William Donovan".

Note:

No deeds found, but early Christian County, Kentucky tax records indicate that both William

Dunavans were living on 400 acres on the Little River and 200 acres on the Pond River. No

American Revolutionary War Bounty Land Warrants have been found for Pvt William Dunavan

but, he did serve honorably for two years with the Continental Line, qualifying for a land bounty.

"The widow Pugh [Mary Dunnavan] after returning from Iowa resided in Kentucky about 10

years, or until Francis Asbury Pugh was 12 years old [1832]. Then an uncle of grandfather's

who lived in Illinois sent a wagon to Kentucky and brought the mother and her two children with

their belongings to Illinois. This removal of the widow [Mary Dunnavan Pugh] and her children

might have been occasion by the death of William Donovan, with whom the daughter and her

children might have made their home".

Note:

Mary Dunavan Pugh had siblings living in Christian County, Kentucky during this time.

No connecting Pughs in Illinois.

In 1830 there are no Dunavans listed in the Morgan County, IL census

In 1830 Keaty Dunavan head of household wife to William Dunavan who is not listed

In 1835 tax roll William Dunavan 60-70, [Jacob] Wayn [t] Dunavan 20-30, John Dunavan 20-30

In 1838 the widow Pugh [Mary Dunnavan Pugh], and her two sons moved to Iowa and settled

near Salem, Henry County in the southeastern Iowa. Salem has a population 30 [1908] years

ago of 548. The family lived in the vicinity of Salem until 1846."

Page 4: An excerpt from Dunavan Book, II[McWhorter] and whose son William McWhirter, also a Civil War Veteran, lived with his uncle, Francis Asbury Pugh, for many years. General Isaac Pugh,

"On May 26,1844 Francis Asbury Pugh married Ruth Jessup in Henry County Iowa. Ruth was

born in Indiana November 22, 1822. Her family were Quakers and moved to Henry County and

settled near the Pughs in 1842. Grandmother [Ruth Jessup]apparently united with the Methodist

Church either before or soon after her marriage, for an obituary notice states that she had been

a member of the Methodist Church for more than a half century."

"In the spring of 1846 Francis Asbury [Pugh], his wife [Ruth] a baby son John, his mother

[Mary Donovan Pugh] and brother Washington, joined a caravan and started across the plain

with all their possession in a wagon drawn by an ox team. They started from Salem, which is not

far from the Missouri line and traveled through northern Missouri to St. Joseph. Their route

from St. Joseph was through Nebraska, crossing the forks of the Platte River, then through

Wyoming to Fort Laramie, thence to Fort Hall and to Walla Walla and Willamette Valley."

[Oregon]

"St. Joseph was the last settlement except for the trading posts until they reached the Whitman

settlement, no Walla Walla [Washington]. the leaders of grandfather's [Francis Asbury Pugh] ox

team were two small white oxen which he call 'Mack' and 'Charley'. These oxen seemed to have

been pets, for the would come when he called them to be yoked to the wagon. Mack a mulley,

was so short-legged that when the wagon trai crossed the Platte River grandfather waded the

stream at 'Mack's' side and held his nose out of the water in the deepest palaces".

"The country was a wilderness from St. Joseph West, inhabited only by roving tribes of Indians

and the buffalo. These Indians had not become openly hostile to the whites as yet, but they were

very curious and suspicious of the wagon trains. My grandparents [Francis Asbury & Ruth

Pugh] have told me the Indians would often come to the wagon train when camped and would

want to see everything they had and would pilfer whatever they could get their hands on. The

leader of the wagon train had instructed everyone to have no trouble over such pilfering even if

they suffered some losses. The Indians along the Platte River were Pawnees and especially

troublesome. Their chief urged the wagon train to travel through his country as fast as they

could, saying he could not control the young men, 'they were like good horses.' He also armed

the men that he was afraid these young bucks would steal their stock. At night the wagons were

formed in a circle. All cooking and other domestic work was done within the shelter of the

encircling wagons. The cattle and horses the emigrants possessed were driven to good pasture

and herded at night. At least two men were on guard all night, when the guard changed at least

once. The plains were covered with good grass of course, but sometimes it would be fed off by

the buffalo near the streams. It was necessary to camp near water if possible, and in

consequence the stock sometime had to be driven some little distance from the camp to find

grass".

Oregon Trail, a.k.a. Emigrant Road and the Oregon California Trail: According to an act of

Congress, the Oregon trail begins in Independence, Missouri, and ends in Oregon City, Oregon.

Unofficially, the starting point could be Council Bluffs, St. Joseph, Saint Louis, or possibly other

places. The first major migration via the Oregon Trail to “Oregon Country” occurred in 1843. In

the 1840’s the vast majority of emigrants who used the Oregon trail were farmers bound for

Oregon. The gold strike in California in 1848 brought many Argonauts over the eastern part of

the trail, then they turned southwest after passing Fort Hall. That part of the Oregon Trail that

starts in Missouri and just passes Fort Hall is sometimes called the Oregon ~ California Trail. Ref: http://www.tngenweb.org/tnletters/usa-west.htm

"The Pawnee Chief's warnings were soon proved to be only too well founded. After crossing the

South Fork of the Platte, the Indians stampeded the cattle one night and many of them were

never recovered. The men went out in small parties to look for their missing stock, and among

others grandfather and his closest friend, a young man named Edward Trimble. Trimble was

married and must have come from Salem. As Trimble and another man were going through

grass waist high, Trimble called out to his friend, who was some distance away, that he was

surrounded by Indians, and urged his companion to escape while he could. There was not an

Indian insight and Trimble's companion was reluctant to leave him. But Trimble insisted that he

wave himself, saying, 'You can't save me, the Indians are in the grass all around me.' Trimble's

companion hurried to the camp and returned with an armed posse. But, they found Trimble dead

and scalped and stripped of his clothing near where he was last seen alive."

"Trimble's widow continued with the caravan to Oregon, and I believe she married a man name

Powell, and was in after years known in our family as Aunt Abbie Powell."

"Among the oxen which could not be found was my grandfather's wheel team. [Asbury Pugh]

This necessitated abandonment of their wagon and all the belongings except such as their friend

were able to stow in other wagons. From the Platte River to Fort Hall Grandfather walked and

grandmother rode with friends."

Note:

An 888 mile trip from the Platte to Ft. Hall in southeast Oregon.

Fort Hall was built in 1834 as a fur trading post by Nathaniel Jarvis Wyeth on the Snake River in

the eastern Oregon Country, now part of present-day Bannock County in southeastern Idaho,

United States. Mr. Wyeth was an inventor and businessman from Boston, Massachusetts, who

also founded a post at Fort William, in present-day Portland, Oregon, as part of a plan for a new

trading and fisheries company. Unable to compete with the powerful British Hudson's Bay

Company, based at Fort Vancouver, in 1837 Wyeth sold both posts to it. Great Britain and the

United States both operated in the Oregon Country in these years.

After being included in United States territory in 1846 upon settlement of the northern boundary

with Canada, Fort Hall developed as an important station for emigrants through the 1850s on the

Oregon Trail; it was located at the end of the common 500-mile (800 km) stretch from the East

shared by the three far west emigrant trails. Soon after Fort Hall, the Oregon and California trails

diverged in northwesterly and southwesterly directions. An estimated 270,000 emigrants reached

Fort Hall on their way west. The town of Fort Hall, Idaho later developed 11 miles (18 km) to

the east, and Pocatello developed about 30 miles (48 km) south on the Snake River. Ref: Wikipedia

"At Fort Laramie [Wyoming] when the caravan rested up, grandfather said he saw about 2,000

Sioux Indians. These Sioux were at that time friendly and peaceable, it being the boast of their

chief that his people had never shed a white man's blood."

"I think the caravan mad a longer stop at Fort Hill to rest their stock, have oxen shod and some

exchanged their thin and foot-sore animals for fresh work stock. It was here that grandfather

parted with his yoke of little white steers, 'Mack and Charley'. He traded them, and perhaps a

third oxen, for two Indian ponies. Managing to purchase or trade for saddles, he and

grandmother rode horseback to the Willamette Valley, a distance of 800 miles, grandmother

[Ruth Pugh & John Westly Pugh] carrying her baby in her arms. It is my impression that

grandfather's mother [Mary Dunavan Pugh] rode from the Platte with son Washington."

Note:

"Indians had beset the wagon train and that son, John Wesley Pugh could truly boast that he had

'ridden into the Oregon country in a basket on the hurricane deck of a Cayuse pony.'" Ref Gazette

Times Corvallis, OR - August 9,1949.

Page 7: An excerpt from Dunavan Book, II[McWhorter] and whose son William McWhirter, also a Civil War Veteran, lived with his uncle, Francis Asbury Pugh, for many years. General Isaac Pugh,

"The travel worn emigrants reached Dr. Whitman's settlement in September 1846. Most of the

party planned to spend the winter there, their work stock being poor and weak from the long

journey of five months or more. But Dr. Whitman told them the Indians were in an ugly mood

and that they might turn upon him any day. He urged all whose stock was strong enough to go

on to the Willamette Valley that fall. A part of the caravan including the Pugh Brothers [Asbury

& Washington] and their Mother, [Mary Donovan Pugh] after a brief rest at Dr. Whitman's

pressed on toward the Willamette. All who remained perished in the Whitman massacre which

occurred only a few days after their departure." [Actually 14 months later]

Note:

The Whitman massacre (also known as the Walla Walla massacre and the Whitman Incident)

was the murder of Oregon Methodist Missionaries Marcus Whitman and his wife Narcissa, along

with eleven others, on November 29, 1847. They were killed by a party of Cayuse Native

Americans who accused him of having poisoned 200 Cayuse in his medical care. The incident

began the Cayuse War. It took place in present-day southeastern Washington state, near the town

of Walla Walla, and was one of the most notorious episodes in the U.S. settlement of the Pacific

Northwest. The event was the climax of several years of complex interaction between Whitman,

who had helped lead the first wagon train to cross Oregon's Blue Mountains and reach the

Columbia River via the Oregon Trail, his wife and fellow missionary Narcissa, and the local

Native Americans. The story of the massacre shocked the United States Congress into action

concerning the future territorial status of the Oregon Country. The Oregon Territory was

established on August 14, 1848.

The killings are usually ascribed in part to a clash of cultures and in part to the inability of

Whitman, a physician, to halt the spread of measles among the Native Americans. The Cayuse

held Whitman responsible for subsequent deaths. The incident remains controversial to this day:

the Whitmans are regarded by some as pioneer heroes; others see them as white settlers who had

attempted to impose their religion on the Native Americans and otherwise unjustly intrude, even

allegedly poisoning the natives. Ref: Wikipedia

Waailatpu: Dated November 2nd, 1846 Mrs. Narcissa Whitman, wife Dr. Rev. Marcus Whitman

pens a sympathetic three page letter to her sister Mrs. Elisa Spalding. Narcissa mentions Mary

Johnson; "is a very free, good girl, a good cook and very ready and happy in fulfilling all my

wishes...." And the next sentences speaks of Mary Dunavan Pugh;

"Mrs. Pugh (pronounced Pew), is a very agreeable lady. She sleeps in the kitchen on the sette.

Consequently her presence there is a great help to m as also Mary. She is very kind and motherly

to the children an acts very much as an overseer of Mary in her work".

Waailatpu: Dated December 7th, 1846 a three page letter to Mrs. Laura L Brewer at Waskopum.

In the body of the letter Narcissa Whitman writes; "We have evidence to believe that the spirit of

the Lord is moving upon the hearts of our neighbors also (for we have three families wintering

with us here and two young men and there are at the saw mill in the mountain and five single

men).....

Our female prayer meetings are interesting to us. When we commenced there was only one to

pray besides myself and she is a widow lady [Mary Dunavan Pugh) that is stopping in our family.

He son and wife went down with Raymond of the of Pugh (Francis Asbury & Ruth Jessup Pugh).

Perhaps you may have seen them as they passed you. She is decided and devoted Christian of the

Methodist Episcopal Church. The son and his wife here are professors, one a Methodist and the

other a Baptist, both you in their Christian life. She now prays and also Mrs. Brattain who never

has made a profession but has had a hope for some years - but hid under a bushel doubtless.

Her husband is a universalist but much shaken his belief since he came here. Mary Johnson the

girl that does my work has experienced religion since she came into our family and now take a

part in our female meetings.......

"In 1849 Francis Asbury and Washington Pugh, hearing of the discovery of gold in California,

went by boat from Portland to San Francisco, and by river boat to Sacramento to the gold mines.

They mined gold on the American River for a while when Washington became ill nd his brother

Athena Eastern Oregon. Grandfather sold the old farm for $25,000.00, a large sum for those

times. He took with him to Eastern Oregon most of his live stock which were worth several

thousand dollars."

Mary "Polly" Dunnavan Pugh died January 23rd, 1872 in Linn County, Oregon. She was
