Mexican students, inspired by the actions of students inFrance, the US and elsewhere, took to the streets to protestsocietal iniquities, governmental repression, censorship

and corruption.

Impoverished Mexico wasabout to host the SummerOlympics, which, regardlessof promises and calculations,ALWAYS leaves the host

country in debt.

They were further inspiredby the Cuban Revolutionand the various leftistgroups internationally that

had also been inspired bythe actions of a few whooverthrew a colonial power. Students were joined by

workers from varioussegments of the labor

force.Women were also enjoying new-found freedoms of expression,independence, and liberation fromthe machismo inherent in Mexicansociety.

The students protested over the course of 146 days,basing themselves on the campus of the UNAM. TheRector of the University protected the studentsagainst soldiers and even the President of thecountry [Daz Ordaz], leading 50,000 students in a

On 2 October, the students and protestersmarched from the campus to Tlatelolco, werethey were met by the army and by the OlympicBattalion [military men in plain clothes, whocould identify each other because they hadeither a white handkerchief or a white glove onthe right hand]

After the masses had arrived andassembled, a leader announced that

the planned march to the Casco deSanto Toms del Politcnico [anotheruniversity] was suspended because5000 soldiers and 300 tanks werewaiting for them there.

Many ran to the church forshelter, but the Franciscanfriars inside refused to openthe doors.

As the demonstrators ran towards thestreet in order to escape, they were

The next day..

Life went on in Mexico City as ifnothing had happened.

Most newspapers which were controlled by thegovernment, described the event as a riot caused bystudents, who provoked the military. One paperdescribed the students as terrorists.

The official casualty count was 32 dead, 80injured, 1000 arrested. Another 1000 were laterdetained.

The press was prohibited from further investigating andpublishing about the massacre.

Documents released years later showed the snipers to have beenmembers of the Presidential Guard, who had been ordered to fireon the soldiers in order to provoke them.

Tlatelolcotoday

It look over 30 years to get anofficial investigation into themassacre. Vicente Fox, the firstMexican president to NOT be amember of PRI, opened themilitary and governmental

archives to release officialdocuments. Former President LuisEcheverra was arrested oncharges of genocide, but thecharges were later dismissed.

The investigation continues.

Documents showing the roleof the Pentagon, the CIA, theFBI and the US State Dept. inthe events preceding andfollowing the massacre havebeen discovered.
