Elkhart County Parks Goshen Parks and Recreation Middlebury Parks and Recreation Town of Shipshewana Friends of the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail and Connected Trails Trail Overview Three trails, the MapleHeart Trail, Wilden Avenue Trail and the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail connect Elkhart, Goshen, Middlebury and Shipshewana. The total distance from Elkhart to Shipshewana is 25 miles. Two sections totaling 1.25 miles, shown in brown on the map, are on county roads. The trail surface is asphalt, except for 1.7 miles from State Road 4 to County Road 28 northeast of Goshen where the packed limestone surface is accessible and suitable for narrow-tired bicycles. The trails are managed by Elkhart County Parks, Goshen Parks and Recreation, Middlebury Parks and Recreation and the Town of Shipshewana. The trail system passes through urban areas, small towns and agricultural communities. The countryside along the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail includes the third largest Amish community in the United States. The Friends are a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to maintaining, expanding and promoting the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail. Volunteers assist with the day-to-day work required to achieve the short- and long-term goals. Friends’ volunteers donate their time, equipment and financial resources to support the trail. Financial contributions pay for Friends’ operating costs, trail literature, trail maintenance and also for closing “gaps” where the trail currently uses county roads to connect uncompleted sections of trail.
