Light blue cloth with gilt stamping and sheep photo inset on front board.In this scarce work, the author used five articles originally appearing in The Field magazine detailing a five-month sporting expedition in Baltistan and Ladakh. He hunted ibex, bharal, goa antelope, Ovis ammon, and urial, with chapters on each of these species.

In this classic of high-mountain hunting, Adair and his companions crossed the Chorbat River into Ladakh where they stalked ibex and Ovis vignei. After reaching Leh, they hunted Tibetan argali and urial.

Adams offers chapters on hunting all North American big game with his bow, including mountain goat and the Grand Slam of Sheep. He collected a goat on Olivia’s Nipple in northern British Columbia; a Dall sheep in the Mackenzie Mountains of the Northwest Territories; a Stone ram near Watson Lake in the Yukon; a bighorn in west-central Alberta; and a desert ram in northwest Arizona’s Hualapai Reservation.

Aflalo, F[rederick] G., ed. Sport in Europe. London: Sands and Co., 1901. 4to., xii + 483 pp., frontis photo, and illustrated plates. Olive cloth with pictorial gilt stamping.This compendium of articles includes a lengthy chapter on hunting in the Russian Empire by Elim Demidoff for tur, chamois, and bharal in the Caucasus, and with notes of Ovis poli and Ovis ammon in the southern mountainous regions. The rest of Europe is treated on a country-by-country basis with information on hunting chamois in Austria, Hungary, Italy, Germany, and Spain; ibex in Greece, Spain, Portugal, and Italy; and mouflon in Sardinia. Of actual hunting experiences, Pablo Larios describes his hunt after ibex in Spain’s Sierra Blanca of Ojén.

Aflalo, F. G., ed. The Sportsman’s Book for India. London: Horace Marshall & Son, 1904. Royal 8vo., xvi + errata slip + 567 pp., color folding map, frontis, illustrated and photo plates, 3 map plates. Dark green cloth with pictorial gilt stamping.Aflalo collected a variety of veteran sportsmen as contributors to this compendium of Indian field sports. Most the big-game hunting information is presented in terms of routes to take, equipment, best areas to hunt, and seasons as opposed to actual hunting experiences. In his chapter on hunting in the Himalayas and Kashmir, Captain A. G. Arbuthnot does include his ibex hunting adventures in Baltistan.

The anonymous author provides advice for hunters in India based on his own experiences. He includes brief episodes of his hunts for tahr and serow, with additional notes on how to stalk markhor, ibex, and wild sheep.

Akroyd, Charles H. A Veteran Sportsman’s Diary. Inverness: Robert Carruthers & Sons, 1926. Royal 8vo., 337 pp., frontis. Blue cloth, gilt stamping.Akroyd recounts his adventures hunting and fishing in a variety of European, British, and North American locales. Included are descriptions of two trips to the Rockies with successful hunts in the Lillooet region after mountain goat on the first journey, and a successful stalk of bighorns in the Similkameen area in the second.

Allen, Dr. William A. Adventures with Indians and Big Game, or Twenty Years in the Rockies. Chicago: A. W. Bowen & Co., 1903. 8vo., 302 pp., frontis, photo plates. Brown half-leather, gilt stamping, with marbled paper-covered boards. Allen, a dentist, provides numerous adventures he experienced while in the Rockies and on the Great Plains. Among the game he bagged were bighorn sheep near the Bear Tooth Range in Montana and mountain goat in Dearborn Canyon.

Among this Hungarian aristocrat’s sporting adventures are climbs and hunts in the Khyber highlands where he collected trophy ibex, markhor, and urial. On the frontiers of Tibet he bagged Ovis ammon, bharal, and Tibetan antelope. The photos are particularly interesting.

This is an entertaining account of the author’s hunting trips after chamois in the Bavarian highlands, including sport on the Kremmersberg, the Oesterberg, and other locales. The tinted lithographs are especially evocative of the sport and the age. The new edition of 1860 detailed additional jaunts after chamois in Austria’s Tyrol.

After going as far as his vehicle could take him, he traveled for three days on horseback to get to the hunting camp in the Tuliboi Valley. He collected two young Marco Polo argalis.
