ABSTRACT

Anwar Ali Fikri, Istarul. 2012. An Analysis of Imperative Sentences in Troy Movie

Script. Skipsi: English Education Department, Teacher Training and

Education Faculty. Muria Kudus University. Advisor: (1) Fitri Budi

Suryani SS, M.Pd. (2) Agung Dwi Nurcahyo SS, M.Pd

Key words: Movie Script, Imperative Sentence, Analysis.

Language is used for communication in a speech community or culture

acquired by all people in much the same way-language and language learning

both has universal characteristics. In delivering ideas, feelings and desires, people

select the appropriate language. English has been considered as an international

language. It is the fact that English mastery is very important for all who want and

need to progress. When students do not pay attention to grammar, it will be

difficult for them to use the language in communication with others successfully

because it could make misunderstanding between speaker and hearer whereas it is

the main purpose of communication. That is why grammar has important roles

and it should be mastered by English learners.

In this research, I try to discuss the application of imperative sentence. The

focuses of this review are: what are the imperative sentences used in Troy movie

script, and what are the imperative functions of those imperative sentences used in

Troy movie script. This reason makes me interested to do such an investigation.

I used qualitative research in form of descriptive method. It means the

method is intended to make a systematic and accurate description concerning the

facts and the features of research data. This research is the accumulation of basic

data in descriptive way; not explains about correlation or hypothesis testing.

They were 62 imperative sentences found in the script of Troy, those are: 3

negative imperative, 54 affirmatives imperative and also 5 in single verb. It means

that the actors/actress in Troy movie used to use imperative (use as the infinitive

without to) as direct order. Meanwhile the function of imperative sentence I found

62 Imperatives sentences, those are contains of functions as follows: 23

commands, 19 requests, 5 invitations, 4 warnings, 6 prohibitions and 5 blessings.

It means that the actors/actress in Troy movie used to use imperative as direct

order.

In concluding I suggest that it will be better if we should be learning about

imperative, it is not simple but we have to do it, we can begin with the simple one

such as analyzing and learning the strategy and functions used in script, song lyric

and books.
