WHAT’S SO GREAT ABOUT BITCOIN?
Lack of contentknowledge
# What would you expect?# What would you like to find out?# What might the writer‘s attitude be?
What’s so great about bitcoin?Bitcoin is popular because it’s free from the control of banks or governments.“Anyone can send money to anyone else in the world with a transaction fee of less than a dollar,”says Andreas Antonopoulos, who hosts the Let’s Talk Bitcoin podcast. Anyone can – but noteveryone does (see main article).Digital currencies like bitcoin exist solely as records stored on computers around the world. Thatmight seem strange, but few traditional currencies are actually linked to physical commodities likegold any more. For example, most US dollars exist only as digital records held by banks. Why do you trust that these digital 0s and 1s have value? Because governments back them, andother third parties like banks and payment processors like Visa vouch for the transactions. But governments can devalue a currency by printing extra money. And the 2008 recession showedthat banks don’t always operate with their customers’ best interests at heart.Proponents of digital currencies say they replace these intermediaries with code. The only thingyou need to spend digital currency is knowledge of a secret number associated with an onlinewallet that no one else needs to vouch for.To check whether a bitcoin transaction is legitimate doesn’t require a central bank. Instead, it isdone by a decentralised network of computers that anyone can join. The system is underpinnedby the same mathematics that powers encryption, making it incredibly hard to deceive or controlwithout infeasible amounts of computing power. “The system is built to resist hostile takeover,”says Antonopoulos. It’s not surprising then that since its conception in 2008, bitcoin has gone from being a playthingof hackers to a multibillion-dollar juggernaut. Every day, there are hundreds of thousands ofbitcoin transactions, with people sending money around the world with no centralised oversight orgovernment control.

BITCOIN: A DUMMY’S GUIDE TO
BUYING AND MAKING YOUR OWN
Lack of contentknowledge
# Would you want to read this article? Why?/Why not?
# What would you like to find out?
WANT to buy bitcoins, but not sure where to start? It isn’t for the faint-hearted – owners mustlook after their coins and be prepared to ride out volatile prices. Even the developers warnthat the virtual currency is experimental and has an uncertain future. Still keen? Then readon.
First you need to set up a file or wallet that stores bitcoin. Either download the Bitcoinsoftware, being careful to secure your PC, or use an online service such as blockchain.info.The wallet comes with a code that is your address for receiving bitcoins. Here’s how to getyour hands on them:
Online: you cannot buy bitcoins with a credit card or PayPal because these transactions canbe cancelled by your bank. Since Bitcoin transfers are irreversible the seller would be at risk.Exchanges like MtGox accept payment via irreversible bank transfer, while other sites bringtogether buyers and sellers. But beware: you will have little comeback if a seller withholdsyour coins.
In person: sites like LocalBitcoins match up buyers with sellers in their area. You meet inperson, hand over the cash, and they transfer bitcoins to your address. Bitcoin listings arealso common on Craigslist and other trading sites.
Trade: rather than buying bitcoins directly, you could accept them in exchange for a service. Many Bitcoin job sites let you post adverts. Just tell your customers to send payment to youraddress.
You can also earn bitcoins by becoming a miner and running the Bitcoin software, but thedays of easy money are long gone. Mining is increasingly difficult so you need specialisedhardware to be in with a chance of earning any coins.
