IRISES MAKE A SHOW
T he shows will be held at the
Jenkins Arboretum & Gar-
dens in the John J. Willaman
Education Center. Detailed in-
formation is shown in the boxes
at the right.
The Mid-Season Show features
bearded, Siberian and Louisiana
irises. The Late-Season Show
allows the Japanese and the late
Louisiana irises to take center
stage. Any blooming iris, how-
ever, may be exhibited in either
show. And there will be an Artis-
tic Division again this year in
each show.
Vince Lewonski is the chair for
both shows. If you would like a
show schedule, download it from
the DVIS website www.dvis-
ais.org or contact Vince.
A successful show depends on
those who bring entries. We en-
courage each of you to partici-
pate even if it may be your very
first time. There will be those at
the shows to assist you. Fur-
thermore, you do not need to be
a DVIS member to exhibit, so tell
your friends.
A good place to learn how to en-
ter an award-winning specimen
is by reading Vince’s informative
"Selecting and Preparing Iris
Stalks for the Show" available at
www.dvis-ais.org under the
Show Iris Preparation tab.
If you can help by working at a
show, please contact Vince.
Whether or not you take a direct
part in the shows, please come
and enjoy the beauty. And en-
courage your family, friends and
neighbors to attend.
The shows are open for viewing
by both members and the public
from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The
complete time schedule is
shown in the lower box at the
right.
There is no admission fee to ei-
ther show. As an extra incen-
tive, a coupon will be available to
all show attendees for a free iris
at the sale in July.

DVIS Dates for 2013
There are a myriad of color combinations in
the bi-colors. And every year, our hybridizers
expand the color combos.
Latest Dykes Medal winner ‘Florentine Silk’ is
a good example. The hybridizers have long
sought pink over blue. Although the goal is
yet to be reached, some wonderful creations
like this beautiful variety have been created
along the way.
‘Flying Carpet’ is an iris that adds brilliance
to the garden. The fall color in this combina-
tion is probably the only time we see some-
thing close to bright red in a bearded iris petal.
All of us want variety in our garden. With bi-
colors, you get variety in a single flower.
‘Kathy Chilton’, ‘Magharee’, ‘New Face’ and
‘Party’s Over’ are a few of the latest new com-
binations.
We always have bi-colors at the DVIS sale.
Consider the possibilities.
The Magnificent Bi-Colors
On The Internet
An Iris for the Shade Neighboring Susquehanna Iris Society has
some interesting newsletters worth your read-
ing. These can be found on www.region3.org.
For instance, Jay Holcomb wrote a fine article
on i. cristata in the February 2013 newsletter.
This small iris, only 3 to 6 in. tall, loves shady,
moist conditions. Most of us have a shady
area where we can’t grow other irises. This
could be the answer. With a little more sun,
you might also try i. tectorum.

Open Gardens We invite you to visit our open gar-
dens. All the open gardens are
listed on the last page. This year
there are 19 gardens in the Open
Garden Program. It is a wonderful
opportunity to see different and
newer varieties of irises, to witness
how they are grown, and to get ac-
quainted with other iris enthusiasts.
Please call or email before you vis-
it.
Eight of the gardens host the club
irises. Those bought in 2010 will
be sold to members this year at
super-bargain prices. This is an
excellent opportunity to make out
your wish list. The order sheet will
be included with the next DVIS
eNewsletter.
Thanks go to all those who open
their gardens to our members.
Special thanks go to Jen Cunning-
ham, open garden chair, for putting
together this special opportunity for
our members.
If you are interested in adding your
garden to the open-garden list for
next year, let Jen hear from you.
Judges’ Training for Median Seedlings In-garden judges’ training will be given by
Vince Lewonski on evaluating median seed-
lings hybridized by Gary Slagle. This training
will be of interest to all members. Judges will
receive 2-hour credit. This also is an oppor-
tunity to see many varieties of median bearded
irises. Please notify Vince if you can attend at
[email protected] or (484) 682-5900.

‘Po No Mo’ Photo: R. Thoman
Photo Tip
BACKLIT By Ron Thoman
It is common to take
backlit photos of wild-
flowers. I have lain
prone on my stomach in
the grass to do this.
Passing through the pet-
als, the light shows the
delicacy and the structure
of wildflowers.
This can also me done
effectively with irises.
As seen by the photo of
‘Po No Mo’, it gives the
flower a wonderful trans-
lucence. Light seems to
be streaming from within
the standards. The best
time to take this kind of
shot is before 10 a.m. or
after 3 p.m.
Warning: It may be harmful
to your eyes or camera if
the sun itself is included in
the photo.

Member Jose’ Juico exhibited his Ike-
bana creations at Jenkins Arboretum
in February. Not only did he craft the
many floral arrangements, but he de-
signed and sculpted the beautiful con-
tainers.

the gardens of Howard Bushnell and Brett
Butler. Howard has gardens in Burlington,
NJ and Princeton Junction, NJ. Brett has two
gardens in Florence, NJ. Both of them are
doing a lot of tall bearded hybridizing, and
would appreciate having people come see the
results of their efforts.
If planning on attending, please bring a lunch
and beverage. Details will follow as the date
gets closer, as the weather can affect our
plans. Please contact Vince Lewonski at
