An A-Z of Cruise Brands, their Fleets and Passengers
2017
Published March 2017

The art of persuading cruise lines to schedule more calls at your port or destination is the same as that required to come out of an interview with a job offer: you need to learn as much about their business as possible before you apply.
Some cruise companies have lots of brands; some only have one. Some brands have lots of ships; some only have one. Some have only mega-ships; some only have yacht-sized ones; some have a mix of both.
Their passengers also come in all different nationalities, age and income groups.
There is a lot to learn and, with new brands and ships being introduced on a regular basis, it is hard for anyone to keep up but it is vital for your own business that you do.
For there are three main reasons a cruise line selects a port for a call (and then keeps coming back):
1. Affordable port fees and charges2. High passenger appeal and satisfaction levels
And3. High revenues from shore excursion sales
They always say that 2 is the most important factor but really it is 2 and 3 combined.
So, to secure the calls you want, you need to know what will make the passengers of an individual company, brand or ship want to come to your destination, enjoy it and book lots of tours.
So Seatrade has used its unparalleled experience and expertise in the global cruise world to provide information in this Whitepaper that will help you do just that.
Featuring 57 brands and 290 ships (plus 72 on order/new builds) under the industry’s own categories: Contemporary (mass-market/3 star-plus); Premium (Four star); Premium-plus (Four star-plus); Luxury (Five Star) as well as those operating in Budget or other market niches.
Read and keep this Whitepaper to ensure you don’t fail your next interview.

Where they cruise nowPrimarily from German ports into Northern and Western Europe and Scandinavia with a new seven-day year-round programme from Hamburg. The ships also cruise round-Britain, Mediterranean, Canaries, Caribbean, Central/South America, Arabian Gulf and Asia.
CrewMulti-national but with Germans the largest nationality group. Numbers range 300-700 on the different-sized ships but there is about 1,000 on the new AIDAprima and even more on the two 5,000-passenger ships on order.
Key passenger characteristicsAlmost all passengers are German with the rest from other German-speaking countries such as Austria and Switzerland so transit destinations face demand for German-speaking guides on shore tours and information staff for crew. Average passenger age is mid-40s and, although the newer larger ships attract a broader demographic, the brand emphasis is still on wellness and activity tours (cycling etc) ashore.
