Their fantastic fundraising effort followed in the footsteps of the 2006 team who actually won the rally!

How can I help?Whether it’s by doing a sponsored event such as a walk, run, bungee jump, abseil, silence, air guitar session (!! see photo, right) or anything else, or by making a simple donation, you can help Amy’s

Retreat to achieve its aim of providing holidays and respite breaks for families affected by childhood cancer. Please see the back page for contact details and check out www.amysretreat.blogspot.com for more ideas.

Waterthorpe school uniform company School Trends has made a long-term commitment to Amy’s Retreat for Kids with Cancer. So far their workforce has raised several thousand pounds doing everything from plant sales to sponsored bungee jumps, and a company day out in the Lake District (see photo) which included a sponsored walk. All of the money they have raised has gone to help families who have children receiving treatment for cancer.

Families are nominated for holidays by the CLIC Sargent social work team, and Amy’s Retreat is proud to be able to say that, with the help of

have never turned a family down for a holiday. Help us to continue to meet this demand by making a donation today (see page 4 for contact details).

Thurcroft Cancer Fund

A. R. EventsAmy’s Retreat for Kids with Cancer runs a series of sponsored events throughout the year that you can take part in. They are a lot of fun, and many of our sponsors have used

them as an opportunity to make their first attempt at a new activity (first 10K run, half marathon, abseil, bungee jump etc).

Sponsorship There are no minimum amounts of sponsorship

to be raised - every penny helps us to provide much-needed breaks for families, and other activities in support of the Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

ChristmasAlthough it seems a bit early to be mentioning

the festive season it’s now that we have to start thinking about our busiest time of the year, with lots of opportunities to make and sell Reindeer Food (see the blog!) or to take part in the Santa 5K - the toughest Santa race in Sheffield! Call 0784 164 7866 for details.

The Thurcroft Cancer Fund gave a tremendous boost to our ability to meet the demand for holidays and respite breaks by making a second donation of £5,000 to Amy’s Retreat for Kids with Cancer in February 2008. Thurcroft Cancer Fund handed out an incredible £65,000 to various cancer charities at the Gordon Bennett Memorial Hall, Thurcroft, on Friday 29th February. Most of the money was raised through their charity shop from selling items in the 50p to £2 range!! The money will help enormously with Amy's Retreat's work this year, and in straight financial terms will pay for five families who have a child with cancer to take a holiday/respite break. However, as with all donations to Amy's Retreat, the Thurcroft Cancer Fund donation will help many more people as those families and their friends tell others about the charity’s work.

This article is dedicated to all the runners, from the Santa 5K to the Great Union Canal Race, who have endured all sorts of hardships to raise money for Amy’s Retreat for Kids with Cancer.

The note below comes from Steve Phillips’ fundraising website, and sums up the experiences of all our runners:

On Sat May 24th 2008 I was on the start line of the Grand Union Canal Race. (GUCR) Britain's longest, toughest, non-stop running race. The GUCR is run from the centre of Birmingham to the centre of London along the Grand Union Canal. I was required to complete the 145 mile distance within the time limit of 45 hours with no stops longer than 40mins. Putting it simply: It's five and a half marathons in just under two days with no sleep, easy !!!!

Unfortunately I failed to finish, reaching 95.55 miles before having to pull out through general fatigue, blisters like you've never seen and a torn calf. In the words of a famous actor "I’ll be back".

Thanks to all that have donated and for your words of encouragement.

Donating through my sponsorship page (http://www.justgiving.com/grandunioncanalrace) is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to get money to Amy's Retreat For Kids With Cancer. Don't be put off by filling things out on the computer, the main thing is that the donation can be changed to as little or as much as you want. Think of the price of a takeaway, a pint of lager or a packet of cigs, please dig deep.

Take care, and thankyou,

Steve Phillips.

Stop press: Tuesday 27th May

I’ve just spoken to Steve, and he’s a bit sore, but otherwise fine, and he really means it when he says he’ll be back next year. He’s raised about £1,500 so far, which is absolutely brilliant.

If you want to start with something a bit less ambitious, but still an enjoyable challenge, why not try the Great Yorkshire Run in Sheffield on 7th September. Sponsorship forms are available from [email protected] and entry details are at http://entry.greatrun.org/EventInformation.aspx?StreamId=19 . Last year’s inaugural event saw 5,000 runners take part, and was a great experience, with lots of people taking the time to cheer the runners on their way

Steve Phillips - Hero!
