I love zoos! We've been going to the annual fundraiser at the Denver Zoo (Do at the Zoo)
since 2012. It combines so many great things: dressing up, date night, food, drink, and THE
ZOO. Since 2013, we've been including our picture from Do at the Zoo on our Christmas
cards.
June 18, 2015 - it started like any other Do at the Zoo. We were walking around enjoying the
great food, but unlike other years, Matt seemed reluctant to take our usual picture. We were
approaching the lawn by the giraffe house where there was a large temporary event light. Matt
said something like, "there's some good light. Let's get our picture taken over there." We
waited for quite a while for someone that "looked like they're good with a camera" to come by
and take our picture (odd since we normally just take a "selfie"). Matt moved me so that I was
standing on his right, and the nice gentleman took several pictures. He then came up to show
Matt the pictures to make sure they looked ok, and Matt asked him to take one more. Matt
grabbed the water bottle I had been hiding behind my leg and tossed it away and then (like a
ninja) he was down on one knee holding a ring!
I'm pretty sure my brain stopped functioning. All I could see was the beautiful, sparkling ring,
and all I could think was, "is he finally proposing? holy crap - this is the moment I've been
waiting for! what's he saying? ooooh...sparkly ring." I vaguely heard Matt say, "best friend...I
love you...marry me." I swear I said yes, but then Matt was urgently whispering, "Bu, say yes!"
My brain finally caught up with reality, and I responded with a very enthusiastic, "YES, I said
yes!!" Matt stood up and placed the ring on my finger amid claps, cheers, and offers of
congratulations from many other Do at the Zoo attendees that stopped to watch the proposal.
It was perfect and certainly worth the wait!
