Our long-awaited Netherlands trip is planned to coincide with Dutch Design Week, 2016, the biggest design event in Northern Europe which presents the work of 2400 designers in locations throughout the city of Eindhoven, Holland’s innovative industry and design capital. DDW is different from other design events because it concentrates on the designs of the future . . . the emphasis is on experiment, innovation and cross-overs. We’ll spend two days with special access to the ateliers of leading artists and craftsmen working in glass, porcelain, textiles, and more, all rarely open to visitors.

Few cities blend history with modern urban flair as does Amsterdam, capital of the Netherlands! This UNESCO World Heritage site boasts more than 100 kilometers of picturesque canals and massive harbor, 90 islands and 1500 bridges. Back in the 17th century, the now famous crescent shape of Amsterdam’s city center was designed and built in a unique system of concentric canals; as a result, this city featuring art, architecture, magnificent cathedrals and emblematic canals is known as a “Venice of the North.” Our itinerary features private visits with collectors, artists and designers in Amsterdam and Eindhoven as well as a focus on modern architecture and design in Rotterdam!

Our expert guide will share her extensive knowledge of the history, art and architecture in each of our destinations throughout our stay. Joining us for our focus on contemporary art and design is a former gallery owner and art curator of international exhibitions who currently works with the National Glass Museum in Leerdam.

Our adventure begins in the neighborhoods of Amsterdam where we are promised to experience the unique Dutch feeling of “gezelligheid,” which roughly translates as “conviviality or coziness.”

Amsterdam highlights include:

~ An introductory tour of the city along with lunch aboard a grand, classic canal boat on the day we arrive.

~ Masterpieces of art abound here and our itinerary includes so many! The Van Gogh Museum showcases the world’s largest collection by “tortured native son, Vincent;” a few blocks away, Vermeers, Rembrandts and more treasures of Golden Age masters fill the glorious Rijksmuseum, now open after massive renovation and expansion.

The Stedelijk Museum is the most important international museum of modern and contemporary art and design in the Netherlands; we’ll see why “Holland’s most talked-about museum building” was dubbed “the bathtub” following its eight year renovation. Private tours at all three of these not to be missed landmarks are on our itinerary!

~ We’ll enjoy a reception at the home of avid supporters and mentors of uniquely talented young Dutch artists and designers; we’ve been invited to join them and to meet a select group of artists who will share their work and their inspiration.

~ Gijs Bakker is internationally recognized as a pioneer in the field of contemporary jewelry design. He is a co-founder of Droog Design, a Dutch collective of designers and products including jewelry, furniture, and accessories for the home; his work is represented in public and private collections, worldwide.

Before departing Amsterdam, we’ll make stops in The Hague and Rotterdam for visits to:

~ . . . The estate of a prominent collector in the Hague who is in the process of constructing a private museum due to be open by the time we are there!

~ . . . The beautiful Mauritshuis, home to the best Dutch paintings from the Golden Age. We’ll be welcomed by the Director before our private tour. This world-renowned collection is housed in intimate museum rooms within a 17th Century monument; Vermeer’s beloved Girl. . . is among many masterpieces on permanent display.

~ Rotterdam is famous for its eye catching skyline and modern architecture; architects are referring to it as “the city of the future!” We’ll tour the city stopping for a visit at Markthal, the “bombastic market hall” designed by the prestigious firm, MVRDV. Final stops will be at: Galerie VIVID, one of the first to exhibit the work of contemporary and modern artists and designers in the context of both art and design; and Ateier van Lieshout to meet Joep van Lieshout, “sculptor, visionary and enfant terrible,” famous for his creations which straddle art, design and architecture and are exhibited world-wide.

~ The Kroller Muller Museum is home to the second largest Van Gogh collection in the world along with major works by Monet, Picasso and Mondrian. We’ll also enjoy its extensive sculpture garden featuring works by iconic artists including Rodin, Moore, Dubuffet and Rotterdam’s Joep van Lieshout.

~ Gallery Marzee, founded in 1978, is well known for its support of young artists as well as established masters. Housed in a former granary on the waterfront in Nijmegen, its nearly 3000 square feet of exhibition space earns its ranking as the largest gallery exhibiting contemporary art jewelry in the world!!

~ An exquisite example of art jewelry is the paper-craft work of Nel Linssen which is celebrated internationally. Inspired by botanical imagery for thirty years, this Dutch designer’s razor edged bracelets and swirling collars are intended to come alive as they change color and contour in response to the movement of the wearer.

On departure from Amsterdam, we’ll head south, making two stops while en route to Eindhoven:

~ At the European Ceramic Work Centre in Olsterwijk, we’ll meet the Director for a tour of this international workplace where artists, designers and architects explore the technical and artistic possibilities of ceramics. We’ll explore the artist-in-residence center which is noted for excellence in ceramic art, design and architecture.

~ The Textile Museum, a former textile factory in Tilburg, mounts exciting exhibitions in the fields of art, design and craft. In its Textile Lab, national and international designers, architects, artists and promising students are supervised by product developers and technical experts as they explore the endless possibilities afforded by textiles, computerized techniques and crafts.

We’ll spend the final two days of our trip in Eindhoven, where, for the past twenty years, the city has been reinventing itself as a global hub for design and technology. In 2002, the internationally respected Design Academy helped to debut Dutch Design Week, a showcase for thousands of designers that now draws more than 250,000 visitors! DDW has grown to a nine-day event featuring exhibitions, pop-up shops and restaurants at locations throughout the city. Here, artists at several Eindoven-based studios will open their doors to welcome us. Look forward to meeting acclaimed Dutch felter and textile artist, Claudy Jongstra and sculptor, Nacho Carbonell, internationally known for his fantastical free-form furnishings, along with designers working in a variety of fields.

Come join us and experience for yourself the Dutch “gezelligheid” as “cappuccinos appear and disappear in 350-year-old bars . . . how beers do the same in candlelit time-warps. . .” It’s all here, along with brilliant art, craft, design and so much more! Space is limited so please reserve promptly.

*for the purposes of this release “creditor” is the traveler and debtor is any of the herein released.
