AMS Counseling Referral Process

There are many reasons that students choose to speak with a school counselor. Often times, students need a place to simply talk about what is happening in their world. The counseling office provides a safe place for them to put things in perspective and to learn how to better understand and manage their feelings. Students do not need parent permission to speak with a school counselor.

Referral Types

The counselor has noted a need to talk with the student and will call the student in based on this observed need.

Counselor Initiated Referral

This is when a student has a problem that they are comfortable enough to come to see the counselor to discuss themself. Please keep in mind that ALL students and their concerns are VERY important to me, however, if I am not in my office, they will need to fill out a form for me to see them. This form can be found on the common drive and can also be picked up in the counseling office. If I am not available, this form will serve as my reminder to come and visit with the student at some point during the day.

Student Self Referral

A teacher/administrator/staff member asks the counselor to see a student based on their noted and documented interventions and observations. The teacher/administrator/staff member will need to submit the AMS Counseling Referral form for this referral.   This form is on the common drive.

Teacher/Administrator/Staff Member Referral

A parent requests that their child be seen. This is done by contacting the school counselor via telephone or e-mail. My email is: tkroenert@atlisd.net

Parent Referral

Sometimes a student is more comfortable talking to you as their teacher because they see you daily and have developed a relationship with you. If that is the case, foster that great relationship and know that I am here to support both you and the student, as needed.

My door is always open to you, as a student, teacher, faculty member or administrator.

Things discussed in my office are confidential unless they pose harm to yourself/others; have to do with abuse or neglect; require court or other legal proceedings.
