School Highlights

The 6th Annual Pitchfest was held at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Bengaluru campus on 3rd & 4th February 2018. The response to the Amrita TBI's incubation program was overwhelming as the number of applications touched over 800+ from 22 different states competing for US$200,000 prize money to help fund and kick-start their idea. The highlights of the Pitchfest were the new developments based on the past experiences in the TBI Incubation programme. Firstly, the culmination of the first time executed ‘100 day Acceleration Program’. Several Amrita TBI accelerated startups have graduated successfully after changing their business plans and strategies resulting in follow on funding. Secondly, a new programme designed specifically for Amrita students and faculty to encourage mentor entrepreneurial talent within Amrita through which they have not only be exposed to the country’s top startups during the event but also had an opportunity to interact and receive feedback on their own startup ideas prior to long term mentorship. On day-1, the selection of the top 30 start-ups went through a half-day mentorship program. On day-2, these top start-ups had to pitch their ideas in front of an elite panel of investors and dignitaries. The winners of the TBI pitchfest were ‘Yellow Messenger’, a company which uses conversational artificial intelligence platform to automate and orchestrate intelligent conversations across social media platforms, ‘Linksmart DNA’, an IP-oriented mass marker start-up that secures products and packages from counterfeiting, tampering, re-fill and warranty fraud, and ‘Book My Diamond’ a technology platform that helps jewelry retailers to search a live inventory of loose, certified diamonds, and buy them. The event saw several stalwarts from the Startup Ecosystems from the Govt. (DST, NITI Aayog), Investor Community (Angel Investors and Venture Capitalists) and Industry participating as Judges.

Public Speaking Workshop

February 2018 PAGE 6

School Highlights

A public speaking workshop was conducted by Maardhani, the literary club on 9th February 2018.

The session began with Ms. Harini Srivatsan (S6-ME), Secretary, Maardhani polling the audience to solicit their views on the necessity of good public speaking skills. It was de-duced that a good orator is someone who can persuade people into believing his ideas and vision. The four major parts of public speaking, namely Presentation, Points, Precision and Practice were described in detail. The participants were made aware that presentation, rather than vocabulary, plays a vital role in building a good communication. The importance of active hand movements and timely pauses was highlighted using illustrations. It was emphasized that a good speech should consist only of points that are factual. The participants were taught to keep their content to the point and convey their views clearly. It was suggested that they ask rhetorical questions while they speak to keep their audience engaged. The importance of precision in their content was clarified by conducting a small activity in which the participants were asked to answer a question in seven to ten words. The participants were suggested to keep their daily conversa-tion precise and crisp to help incorporate the same technique in public speaking. The final part of the workshop was ‘practice’. An on the spot demonstration of turncoat by Ms. Harini impressed the participants, following which they were given an opportunity to exhibit their spontaneity and oratory skills. The workshop concluded with Ms. Harini thanking the attendees and encouraging them to consult her for any support that they may require in improving their speaking skills. The event ended on a high note with the participants looking forward to many more resourceful events.

The event had a large turnout and the audience was left content with the talk. A few students expressed their interests in exploring the topic. Talk on Blockchain and IoT Smart Cities

A talk on Blockchain and IoT Smart Cities was held on the 3rd day of IO Week, 7th February, 2018. The speaker, Ms. Ashwini Nayak (S6-CSE) started off promptly with Blockchain, a digital ledger.

Moving on, she spoke about how it works and its advantages over the traditional system. She gave day to day examples which the audience really digged. She interacted with them and made them examples of transactions to explain the concept. The second half of the talk was an introduction of IoT Smart Cities, a new concept where cities are made to evolve for a better quality of life. She explained how our limited natural resources with multiple uses are being burdened because of globalization, connecting cities and urbanization, enabling people to migrate to cities. She further enlightened the audience how by connecting devices, gadgets, people etc., and with the help of sensors we can generate useful data which can be analysed to provide people with insights, which help them take better decisions. She gave the audience live examples like Modi's smart cities mission in June 2015 which aimed to develop 109

cities to make them citizen friendly and sustainable.

Industrial visit to “The Varahi Hydroelectric power station and Kaiga Nuclear Power Plant” On 2nd February 2018, 50 students of S6-ME, A and B sections, accompanied by Mr. Shashi Kumar M.E (Mentor-

Ingenium) and Mr. Prashanth B.N. went for an industrial visit to “The Varahi Hydroelectric Power Station and Kaiga Nuclear Power Plant” located along the Varahi river and along Kali river respectively. This visit was organized by Ingenium with the sole purpose of an industrial exposure to the students.

Initially, they visited Varahi Underground Hydroelectric power plant, where students got an insight about Turbo machinery, Pelton wheel and other design aspects. Also learnt about transmission of power and it’s how about. Then they visited Kaiga Nuclear power plant located in northern Karnataka, where they were familiarized with production of electricity from nuclear fission reaction and stages of nuclear power generation in India. They had an interactive session with the experts. On a holistic note, this industrial visit indeed fulfilled its purpose with the students gaining valuable experience and knowledge. RC Aircraft Workshop

Two wrongs can never be right. But a team of Wright can make one heck of a plane.

Inspiring the impending engineers to ideate and innovate for an enhanced future, INGENIUM, the departmental forum of mechanical engineering, in collaboration with AerotriX conducted a workshop on RC AIRCRAFT, on 17th and 18th February 2018. The two-day workshop where tech congregates fun turned out to be a mind-boggling and stupefying event of the year. Mr. Lalithkumar D., Secretary of Ingenium hosted the event. A total of 10 teams (50 students) participated in the workshop. The chief trainers of SKYFILABS Mr. Dhilan Mandaliya and Mr. Bhaskaran took over the session for the day. Mr. Dhilan explained the students about the theories and principles behind the hasty speed of aircraft in a succinct style and provided valuable insights on fundamental forces acting on aircraft followed by a session on design algorithm which involved various calculations related to wing and fuselage design. An awe-inspiring afternoon session started with giving kits to all the teams to fabricate fuselage and the wing of the aircraft. At the end of the first day teams were ready with their models. Second day started with installation of various electronic components on the fabricated models. Testing was the biggest task for all the aficionados who were on tenterhooks and yearning for their aircraft to fly. The airborne aircraft hauled the students to cloud nine. The soothing sight of aircraft dancing in the firmament gave glee to the spectators present. The final round consisted of a written test round, where students had to answer few logical questions and model a

paper plane. Mr. Ebin Jose, Co secretary of Ingenium announced the winners list and certificates to the participants

and merit students were distributed. At the end, session was concluded by D. Lalith Kumar with a formal vote of

thanks. The two-day session of exuberance saw an end with a lot of expertise and exhilaration to take along. All the

students who participated in the workshop were very happy for being a part of it.
