Page 2 • THE TOWNSHIP TIMES, April 24, 2013 ‘Mr. Peace’ Visits Saginaw Kevin Szawala, also known as “Mr. Peace,” visited St. Stephen and St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Schools on April 11. Szawala, a Youth Minister at St. Joseph Parish in South Lyon, as well as a Youth Speaker and Hip-Hop Artist, has speaks to youth groups and schools (both public & private) throughout the state. Since 2006, Szawala has spoke to over 100,000 students and staff (Grades K- 12). He talks on a variety of topics ranging from Bullying to Diversity to Forgiveness to Honesty to Inner Beauty to Overcoming Limiting Beliefs to Positive Life Choices to Purpose (Identity) to Suicide to Substance Abuse to Suffering, and much more. Szawala was born in Detroit and moved to his hometown of South Lyon when he was five. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor, with Bachelor of Arts degrees in Economics, Spanish and Global Change, as well as Wayne State University of Detroit where he has a Masters in Business Administration with a focus in Marketing and Entrepreneurial Management. Working in the automotive industry for five years after college, Szawala found his greater passion in working with youth. He now resides in Novi and in his spare time loves to read, learn, create inspirational music and videos, write poetry, play basketball and spend time with those who matter most. MSU Alumni Club honors 16 local students The Michigan State University Alumni Club of Saginaw County recognized 16 local students with its Junior Award. The 11th- graders were honored March 12 with a program at the Swan Valley Golf & Banquet Center in Thomas Township. This is the 16th year the club has given the award, based on nominations by school staff. The 2013 honorees included: Cierra Tolbert from Arthur Hill High School; Allison Dorr from Birch Run High School; Elise Weaver from Bridgeport High School; David Garza from Buena Vista High School; Jordan Dawkins from Carrollton High School; Jared Weisenberger from Chesaning Union High School; Melissa Ann Smith from Freeland High School; Hanna Massa from Hemlock High School; Steven Van Tiflin from Heritage High School; Kaitlyn Church from Merrill High School; Bridget Bator from Nouvel Catholic Central High School; Margarett McBride from Saginaw Arts & Sciences Academy; Lyndon Nelson from Saginaw High School; Stefan Beeler from St. Charles High School; Alissa Gosen from Swan Valley High School; Ariel Muehfeld from Valley Lutheran High School. Brown, MSU Alumni Association) Delta College Students Receive Michigan Campus Compact Award Michigan Campus Compact (MiCC) is pleased to announce that five students from Delta College were awarded for their dedication and commitment to community service during the 17th annual Outstanding Student Service Awards Celebration, April 13, at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center in East Lansing. Each year, MiCC awards students from member colleges and universities across the state for their outstanding commitment to service-learning and civic engagement. Three types of awards are given: the Outstanding Community Impact Award, the Commitment to Service Award and the Heart and Soul Award. This year, more than 450 students from 33 member campuses received awards. Justin Macheslski and Kimberly Owen received the Commitment to Service Award. The award, given to only 33 students statewide, recognizes students’ breadth or depth of community involvement or service experiences. Only 33 students statewide received this award. Macheslski has engaged Delta students in politics through founding The Democracy Commitment Student Club and leading efforts promoting voter registration. Owen has been an integral leader in the newly implemented Public Achievement program which nationally helps young people shape the world around them. Vonnie Jackson, Elaire Moore and Charles Sledge received the Heart and Soul Award. This award is given to students to recognize their time, effort and personal commitment to their communities through service. Michigan Campus Compact is a coalition of college and university presidents who are committed to fulfilling the public purpose of higher education. MiCC promotes the education and commitment of Michigan college students to be civically engaged citizens, through creating and expanding academic, co-curricular and campus-wide opportunities for community service, service- learning and civic engagement.
