Scott uses sanding blocks made from stiff materials because they don’t flex or conform to the surface. This means no cupping and the putty and surface material blend into one smooth surface that leaves no blemishes for paint to reveal later in the project. Scott prefers to make his own block sanders so that he has shapes and sizes that fit his modeling needs. Some are a mere 1/16” wide, some are 4”-6” wide.
Scott does not recommend foam-backed sanding sticks because they conform to the joint being sanded and don’t provide a perfectly smooth repaired joint
Materials
• Miniature metal spatulas and dental tools
• Styrene tube, I-beam and flat stock
• Norton A275 No-Fil Adalox Abrasive Roll (Paper Backing, Pressure Sensitive Adhesive, Aluminum Oxide, Waterproof, Roll 2-3/4” Width x 45yd Length, Grit 400 <amazon.com>
Make the block sanders
• Scott likes putty knives for ready-made tools but also makes custom shapes using .080” sheet styrene shapes that have tubing “handles.” You can also use metal rulers, blocks and other things you find around your workbench. Curved and round tools sometimes come in handy.
• Lay the sanding film down, adhesive surface up on a piece of glass. Press your tool onto the adhesive and then use a hobby knife to cut around the tool’s edge. Keep a straight edge and this will pay off when you start to sand parts with seams next to ridges or raised bands, such as a gun barrel.
• Scott says the adhesive holds permanently and the sanding film does not clog, so the usage life is very long before new sanding film is needed.
• The block sanders can be used wet or dry, but Scott likes to use it dry in order to monitor the surface as he sands. Rough areas are dull and untouched areas are shiny. When it’s all uniformly dull, it’s done.
Sanding tips
• Always sand perpendicular to the seam.
• On cylindrical-shaped parts, use a rolling action that is 45 degrees of angle to the part to prevent flat spots from developing.
• Always use a sanding block that is much larger than the seam. This ensures that the seam is always in perfect contact with the sander.
• Check the surface by viewing it under the reflection of a task light. Look for dark lines or dull spots that still need attention.
• Scott likes to use Tamiya putty (basic type) for nearly all of his work. When sanding is complete, Scott applies a coat of Gunze Sangyo Mr. Surfacer 500 on the area. This final coat is sanded when dry and then it’s ready for paint.

AFV Club US M60A1
in 1:35 scale
by Alex Valz
The turret bustle rack and searchlight had many delicate parts but they survived the assembly and painting stages. Alex used a dark wash first and then followed it with a
European Dirt pigment and water wash. The stowage is from Legend and the figure is from Hobby Fan.

Tamiya French Somua S35 (Italian)
in 1:35 scale
by Brian Alfano
The kit was easy to build. The tracks are individual links that pop together. Brian added some matte medium to give them more support. The straps are made for Tamiya tape. The paint is a custom mix to
replicate the Italian grey/green shade. The figure is from the kit although with a Royal Models head. The statue is from Armand Bayardi. The base is architectural foam scribed into street tiles.

Tamiya US M551 Sheridan
in 1:35 scale
by Mike Petty
The tub for the commander was painted white. At the driver’s station, a windshield washer fluid bottle was added on the inside. The kit tracks are link and length and fit
perfectly although there are ejector pin marks to repair.

Tamiya Soviet T-55
in 1:35 scale
by Steve Fitton
The kit was straightforward in it’s assembly, although it lacked some details like the plumbing and electrical lines. The external fuel tanks on the rear required lots of putty and sanding. Steve used a twisted metal
tow cable. It was painted Soviet 4BO of the time and weathered sparingly with artists’ oil paints and pigments.

Trumpeter Soviet BMP- 2 (Ukraine)
in 1:35 scale
by Tabb Tharrington
Tabb painted the model with Tamiya acrylics. The green is a mixture of XF-81
Dark Green 2 and XF-4 Yellow Green. The camouflage is XF-7 Flat Red with XF-68 NATO Brown and XF-9 Hull Red. The fenders were painted Aluminum and then the camouflage colors chipped off of wear areas. After many trials, a flag was successfully made
by using a Post-it note that was first coated with Tamiya Surface Primer and then airbrushed with Ukrainian colors. The dust lines on the rubber were made using a spare section of track wrapped around the wheel, through which Tamiya Buff was sprayed.

This one is ready for paint. All the tools were left off and in their place the clasps are from Voyager. The concrete armor was dinged up with a round burr in a Dremel power tool.
