Question by Gabe: How to connect my ipod dock (sound and charge) to my
amplifier/home stereo?
i have a sound and charge idock for my ipod but how do i connect it to my denon stereo
system
Best answer:
Answer by Srishti
I don‘t think you will need to. The dock should be loud enough.
If not, then you can use the double headphone wire. The one with the headphone plug at
each end.

Question by mrlizard8: How to extend volume control on car amplifier?
Basically I have a small Dual 150 watt (RMS) amplifier. My radio is a bit older and has no
low level RCA outputs or subwoofer volume control and I‘m to cheap to upgrade it, I‘m
also to cheap to buy a newer amp. Basically my question is: is it possible to fabricate
something to extend the volume control from the trunk to the front of the car. Could I just
buy a potentiometer and some wire and do some soldering, or is there more to it than
that.
Thanks in advance for any help.

iPhone OS 3.0!
by HOSTMEIR on DECEMBER 2, 2011
iPhone OS 3.0!
Another Apple announcement, another Flickr blog. Here goes…
First off, it looks good. Developers obviously have gotten the most benefits, but what do
you expect from an SDK intro, you know?
I will not mention the various developer APIs, as most of you probably aren‘t interested. I
will, however, go into detail about the other things that were introduced.
#1: Copy & Paste! It was about time. Not sure why this wasn‘t in the first release of the
software. According to Apple, there were ―Security Issues‖ before. Support is global in all
of Apple‘s apps, and it will be easy for third-party developers to work it into their apps.
Execution seems simple enough, although we‘ll see how it works in real life.
#2: Landscape Support: Safari always had landscape support, but now it is found in most
of Apple‘s default apps as well. Mail, Notes, Stocks, & SMS all have it now. This is great,
as I like the horizontal keyboard, having larger keys, and I do send quite a bit of email
from my iPod. This should make things faster… While on the subject, more than one
photo can be sent at once now.
#3: MMS: For me, not a big deal, as I have an iPod Touch. However, it seems it has been
implemented well. Supports contact data, audio, pictures, etc. Again, not sure why this
wasn‘t in the first release.
#4: Push Notification: Yeah, this was supposed to be announced last year. Apple says
they had complications. Anyhow, it will be the same as it was demoed last year, allowing
apps to give notifications if something happens via network service.
#5: Bluetooth: Now supports P2P sharing of LEGAL things (sorry, pirates), as well as
stereo audio, wire-free. On first glance, this would seem to only affect iPhone right? Well
sort of… iPhone Edge will not get the stereo audio, as it doesn‘t have that hardware. But,
remember the Bluetooth chip iFixit found in the 2nd Gen Touch? While it was originally
designed for the Nike+ kit, Apple has now ―Unlocked‖ it and it will also do the file
transfer and A2DP.
#6: Tethering: Sort of. Support is built-in by Apple, but the carriers will have to be dealt
with. Apple seems confident that tethering will happen soon.
#7: Calendar Compatibility: It can take new calendar data, as well as subscriptions.
#8: Ability to purchase things from inside apps: Things like e-magazine subscriptions.
#9: Voice Memos: Apple added a basic voice memos app to the iPhone. Unless third-
party apps can find a way to add extra features, I see this as Apple effectively killing those
apps for iPhone. However, the iPod Touch will not get this app, so the third-parties can
still develop for the 2nd Gen Touch.
#10: Notes Sync: Briefly mentioned. Not sure how this will work, but it will be nice.
And finally… Spotlight! Yay! As those of you with Macs know, Spotlight is Apple‘s global
search tool. It looks for anything, anywhere. Now, it‘s on iPhone. To the left of the first
homescreen is a searchbar, which you type in your query. It will search calendars, mail,
contacts, iPod library, etc. for what you are looking for. I‘ll definitely be using this. Search
will also be in the default iPod app, something which I was just bemoaning the lack of last
night.
Overall, I view this as a big update- definitely calls for a new version of the OS. However,
there are some things still missing…
#1: Flash: Frankly, I couldn‘t care less. I have a vehement hatred against Flash and would
rather not see it on the iPhone. For entire websites that are written in Flash and want
iPhone support, change your website design to HTML. Flash is an awful way to write an
entire website. You deserve to not be on the iPhone if your whole site is Flash-ified.
*End rant*
If Flash were introduced, I would hope there would be an option to turn it off. That would
be the first thing I‘d do.
#2: Background Apps: For the most part, I‘m okay. The only apps I truly want to run in
the background are my RSS viewer, Twitterific, and Pandora. The others I really don‘t
care about.
#3: Better App Management: This is the only thing I‘m actively disappointed about. As I
have four pages of apps, I‘d like to see some form of management. For example, apps
could have a ―Genre‖ which they are assigned to. You then have the option to order apps
by Genre. There would be multiple ways to do this.
Free for iPhone, .95 for iPod Touch.
So there you have it. Way too much text crammed into a Flickr description box. I know I‘ll
be forking over .95 in Summer for this update.

Waxing Poetic, or rather, Vinyl
I experimented with different light settings on the camera to achieve this warm effect of
the light on the surface of the record. Check out all the grooveslooping around the
circumference of the record. Carl Haber‘s optical scanning and digital audio preservation
tool, IRENE, takes high-speed photographs as the 78 rpm record plays. Twenty-five spins
of the record are needed to produce a large digital file, roughly 80,000 pixels long, that
can be analyzed by the computer to produce the corresponding sound from the record.
Each image produced by IRENE is turned into a WAV audio file roughly 7 seconds long.

connecting with giant pandas
At the new Fujifilm Giant Panda Habitat, two new yards feature several enriching
features for both animal and visitor enjoyment and add more than 12,000 square feet to
the pandas‘ outdoor exhibit. Additions to the indoor exhibit include a new room with a
rocky outcrop and waterfall, another den, and more visitor viewing space and
informational exhibits.

Experience Asia Trail with an online and audio tour from Fujilfilm.
The creation of this state-of-the-art research facility and habitat is made possible in part
by Fujifilm, who donated .8 million to the Zoo‘s giant panda program, the single largest
sponsorship ever provided to the Zoo.
Many sustainable design strategies, such as planted “green†roofs to reduce
stormwater runoff, were incorporated into the new habitat. Other elements include a
solar hot water system; natural tree-resin bound paving material, instead of petroleum-
based asphalt, on the visitor paths; recycled rubber; sustainably harvested ipe wood,
which is naturally resistant to pests and rot; and dried bamboo, because it is rapidly
renewable resource and does not deplete the environment when harvested. more Asia
Trail green elements
Outdoor Exhibit
The pandas‘ state-of-the-art Fujifilm Giant Panda Habitat is designed to mimic the
pandas‘ natural habitat of rocky, lush terrain in China. Each element has a purpose—from
helping the pandas stay cool in hot weather to giving them a place to hide when they need
privacy. There are rock and tree structures perfect for climbing; grottoes, pools, and
streams for keeping cool; and shrubs and trees, including weeping willows, corktrees, and
maples, and several species of bamboo.
Water-cooled grotto has cold-water pipes in the walls that provide a cool respite.
Low trees and shrubs provide shade and cover.
Fog grove creates a misty retreat from the heat.
Pools and streams offer refreshing dips on hot days.
Rocks and fallen trees allow for climbing and exercise.
Visitors can enjoy two levels from which to view the pandas, several areas where they may
be just inches away from the bears, separated only by glass, and the new Clint Fields
Conservation Plaza, where they can learn more about efforts to save pandas and their
habitat through the stories of real people here and in China. At the Plaza‘s Decision
Stations, people can get a sense of the complexity of conservation choices by watching
videos about wildlife-people dilemmas and deciding which actions to take. Other features
at the Plaza include a topographic map of the mountains of central China and exhibits
about alternative economic activities to reduce habitat destruction. Portraits of villagers,
scientists, park rangers, and others, with the real tools of their conservation work, will be
highlighted. Multimedia displays of photos, video, and audio will give visitors a sense of
place, introducing them to the sights and sounds of China‘s wilds.

University of Maryland Introduces iPads as Part of Mobility Initiative
by MEIR RIVLIN on DECEMBER 11, 2011
University of Maryland Introduces iPads as Part of Mobility Initiative
Image by University of Maryland Press Releases
COLLEGE PARK, Md – As further demonstration of the university‘s strong commitment
to new educational technologies and innovation across diverse media, all 75 students
enrolled in the University of Maryland‘s newly-launched Digital Cultures and Creativity
(DCC) living and learning program within the Honors College were given an Apple iPad
at the start of the fall semester (above – Terp Freshman Victoria Lai receives her new
iPad from OIT‘s Michael Hooker).
This device will be fully integrated into the program‘s curriculum, where it will serve as
the basis for content delivery and instruction. Students will also have the opportunity to
learn to develop their own applications for the iPad. The devices were handed out in late
August when students move onto campus. This latest action is part of the university‘s
Mobility Initiative, a pilot program studying whether mobile technology enhances the
student education experience.
"DCC is thrilled to be joining the university‘s innovative Mobility Initiative," said Dr.
Matthew Kirschenbaum, Associate Professor of English and Director of Digital Cultures
and Creativity. Kirschenbaum adds, "Many of DCC‘s students are digital natives who will
come to campus already having programmed their own applications, made their own
electronic music and art, or designed their own interactive media. They will use their
iPads in the context of a curriculum that immerses them in the surprisingly long and
complex history of thought behind today‘s new media devices. They will learn to develop
new content for the platform, as well as use it to consume rich media integral to their
education."
DCC‘s faculty includes Associate Professor of Computer Science and former director of
the University of Maryland‘s Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory Ben Bederson,
who has already developed applications for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.
For nearly two years, the University of Maryland has been studying whether
incorporating mobile technology enhances the student educational experience.
Sponsored by the Office of the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost,
the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, and the Office of Information Technology, the
Mobility Initiative began in fall 2008. During its two years of existence, 280 freshmen in
the Banneker/Key Scholarship and Maryland Incentive Awards programs have been
given either an iPhone or iPod touch to test inside and outside of class.
In addition to the 75 DCC students who received an Apple iPad in the fall, approximately
160 new freshmen in the Banneker/Key Scholarship and Maryland Incentive Awards
programs were given either an iPhone or iPod touch devices – bringing the number of
student pilot participants to approximately 515.
During the initiative‘s first year, more than 130 student participants used the mobile
devices to substitute for student response devices (also known as clickers) in class, to
access the mobile versions of the university‘s portal and learning management system,
and to participate in varied special activities, such as research scavenger hunts.
For its second year, the pilot study expanded to include additional students, professors,
and learning opportunities. New efforts were undertaken to support faculty in their
efforts to incorporate mobile learning into their courses, including offering a set of iPod
touch devices that can be loaned out to students in a course to support specific learning
activities.
Additionally, an Office of Information Technology (OIT) and Center for Teaching
Excellence (CTE) partnership gives participants in the CTE‘s Summer Institute for
New(er) Technologies the opportunity to explore integrating mobile learning activities
into their courses with support from OIT.
"Four fall courses and five spring courses have been part of these efforts," said Ellen Yu
Borkowski, Director of Academic Support in the Office of Information Technology. "Some
of the mobile learning activities in these courses include recording assessments of high
school PE teachers, recording use of media as part of an international research study,
collecting and distributing interpretations of poetry, and using the devices‘ recording and
playback features in support of learning foreign languages. OIT and the CTE plan to
continue this partnership into the Mobility Initiative‘s third year," Borkowski said.
Additionally, for the spring 2010 semester, a new upper-level computer science offering
was introduced to the university‘s curriculum. The new course, "CMSC498I: Selected
Topics in Computer Science: Programming the iPhone," covers topics such as iPhone
development tools and fundamentals; user interface design; media considerations related
to gaming, audio, and video; and usability and quality assessment. As part of the course,
students are developing new mobile applications for the iPhone, specifically focusing on
ones that can be deployed and used across the university as part of Maryland‘s overall
efforts to support mobile devices on campus.
Digital Cultures and Creativity is sponsored by the College of Arts and Humanities, with
co-sponsorship from the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities, the
Department of Computer Science, and the College of Information Studies. Learn more
