Effects of controls
AimTo learn the primary and secondary effects of the primary controls in forward flight.
MotivationThese skills form the foundations for basic flight
Revision• First lesson … not much to review, however
• Hill climb• Steering wheel on highway vs when parallel parking• Traffic reports on radio
Objectives• Recall the 4 primary controls• Recall primary effects of the 4 controls

•I / You Have control•Follow me thru•Lookout (outside – Especially for other aircraft, inside start your instrument scan)•Never let go of controls without instructor permission, I may do some corrections, it doesn’t mean I’m taking over!•Small slow gentle inputs•Instructor has control below 500’ AGL
Threat & Error Management / Airmanship
Competency Standard• Sets and maintains power (collective) and attitude (cyclic) to achieve straight and level flight
• Straight and level flight at normal cruise (+/- 5kts)• Sets collective pitch (power) to maintain straight and level flight at nominated IAS• Maintains nominated altitude ( +/- 100ft)
Air Exercise• “A no stress lesson”, instructor organises all!• Instructor prepares aircraft, starts-up, radio, taxis, takes-off for training area (west of aerodrome)• Once established, one control at the time,
• Instructor demos• Student follows through• Student performs
• In this order:• Pedals• Collective• Cyclic• (throttle not demonstrated in this aircraft type)
• Student flies back to the aerodrome assisted
Some rotor type
Rotor systems, such as Eurocopter’s Starflex or Bell’s soft-in-plane, use composite material and elastomeric bearings to reduce complexity and maintenance and, thereby, increase reliability.
