”…the original goal that we were working toward in the very beginning": a video version

of HOTorNOT.com.

-Steve Chen, Co-founder of YouTube.com

Origins of Concept

HotorNot.com“I was incredibly impressed with HOTorNOT,

because it was the first time that someone had designed a website where anyone could upload content that everyone else could view. That was a new concept because up until that

point, it was always the people who owned the website who would provide the content."

-Jawed Karim, Co-founder of YouTube.com

YouTube’s Success: Part 1

YouTube's success owes partly to its retro name, simple logo and alternative feel, all

of which Chad contributed to on the creative side while Steve was making sure

the videos played quickly and easily.

Youtube’s Success: Part 2

Despite pressure from advertisers, they would not force users to sit through ads

before videos played.

Youtube’s Success: Part 3

Youtube’s financers, more specifically Sequoia financing advisor and

mentor: Pierre Lamond. Because of the great listening skills of Steve and Chad and the great

financial advise of Pierre, Youtube turned

out to be a great successful in the sense

of revenues.

YouTube History

CEO Sells to Google

Chad Hurley and Steve Chen sold some of Youtube’s rights and control to Google for for $1.65 billion in October of 2006. Now not only does the YouTube team have to

report to Chad and Steve on issue regarding the sight, they need to speak with corresponding Google executives.

Google buys YouTube

Legality History: Part 1

YouTube has responded by publicizing agreements it has made with media

companies to legally show video clips. YouTube says federal law requires only

that it remove videos when copyright holders complain not to pre-emptively

monitor the site for infringements, which would destroy its spontaneity.

Legality History: Part 2

Eric Schmidt, Google's CEO, hired an outside firm to help it analyze YouTube's

legal risks.

Ownership of Posted Videos

By submitting the User Submissions to YouTube, you hereby grant YouTube a worldwide, non-

exclusive, royalty-free, sublicenseable and transferable license to use, reproduce,

distribute, prepare derivative works of, display, and perform the User Submissions in connection with the YouTube Website and YouTube's (and

its successor's) business, including without limitation for promoting and redistributing part or

all of the YouTube Website (and derivative works thereof) in any media formats and through

any media channels.

YouTube and The FTC

The antitrust authorities recently were investigating the recent sale of

YouTube.com to make sure it was in compliance with the Federal Trade

Commission. The approval paved the way for Google to buy YouTube, leapfrogging it

to the top spot in online video sharing.

YouTube Production: Part 1

YouTube is built upon standardized, readily-available technologies.

YouTube Production: Part 2

Videos can be uploaded in the user's choice of the formats:

Audio Video Interleave (avi)
