YourFUTURE
YourCareer
LOOKING for a New Career? Be prepared to take the next step with – Workforce Education from Collin College.
Workforce Education provides you with the technical skills and essential knowledge to earn more right out of college while laying the groundwork for a better, more fulfilling career. You live in a dynamic, growing region. Learn the skills that will help your career grow along with it.
Whether you are pursuing a degree, seeking a certificate to improve your résumé, or building a new skill set for a potential career move, Collin College offers the courses you need. Designed to get you into the workforce quickly with the skills that employers are looking for, Collin offers Workforce Education in both credit and non-credit formats.
Credit courses allow you to build academic credits toward a degree or certificate. Credit certificates can be earned in as little as one year and make you a more desirable job candidate right away. The courses taken for the certificate can also be applied toward an associate degree or bachelor’s degree. Collin College’s associate degree programs, which are planned out over the course of two years, also build toward bachelor’s degrees at four-year universities. See pages 2-3 for a list of Collin’s workforce credit and certificate areas.
Non-credit courses are generally provided by Collin College Continuing Education and focus on skill development for use in the professional world or self-improvement. From health sciences to graphic design, and dozens of fields in between, non-credit classes are designed for adult learners who seek specialized training in specific fields. Learn the skills you need by taking only the classes you want. A list of non-credit areas of study is available on pages 10-11.

Did you know that at least 100 different sleep disorders have been identified? An estimated 60 million Americans suffer from at least one sleep disorder. By the end of 2018, there were only 17,739 registered polysomnographic (sleep) technicians worldwide. As more and more health problems are linked to poor sleep habits, the demand for more sleep technicians will increase.
Through the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, the Polysomnographic Technology program at Collin College is one of only 16 accredited, associate-degree-level polysomnography programs in the entire country.
Students can earn an Associate of Applied Science degree or a certificate in polysomnography. Collin College graduates serve in higher-level job roles within the field, such as lead sleep technologist, sleep lab management, and clinical preceptor.
Polysomnographic technologist average salary: $55,000**

“I selected the polysomnography program because it seemed
to be an avenue that was new and exciting and one in which I could make a difference in a patient’s life in only one night. The program itself was quite challenging but worth every moment. My professors were excellent and made learning
the material interesting. Since graduation I have earned my
Clinical Sleep Health Educator certificate where I use all of my knowledge every day at
Medical City Lewisville Sleep Diagnostic Institute.”

“I have been a musician since I was young. I definitely knew a lot going in, but having those ideas solidified in school really helped me connect the dots. The classes were definitely useful. You learn
a lot of theory, but there are a lot of hands-on opportunities
as well. And it was great to hear [the professors] talk about their experiences. Just hearing about
situations they encountered while they were doing recordings
really helped me a lot with my own production clients.”
Whether you dream of being the engineer behind music’s next big sensation or you want to keep the sound crisp for a band rocking at a club, Collin College’s Commercial Music program can teach you the skills to make the most of the music. From mixing, mastering, and live sound engineering to music marketing and talent management, the Commercial Music program equips you with a solid framework for building a fulfilling career.

“I have been cooking since I was 8 years old. While I had a
broad base of knowledge, I was still challenged because the
classes taught me things I wasn’t familiar with. The nutrition
class that I took was the most impactful, and all of the classes
I took with Chef [Tom] Nixon and Chef [Chad] Burnett
were excellent.”
The door is wide open for you to become tech savvy. If you have an interest in becoming one who is “in the know” with designing, troubleshooting, and maintaining the networks that make up the internet, Collin has programs to put you on the road – or to give you a leap ahead in your networking career.
The Computer Networking-Infrastructure track prepares students to design and install secure network systems with a focus on managing network devices. Courses and hands-on labs in this track specifically prepare students for the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) and the Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) certification exams.
Students will be able to professionally design and install secure network systems based on customer requirements, monitor and maintain network traffic and security, and maintain network hardware and software on Cisco Networks.
Cisco Certified Network Associate average salary: $81,200*

AAS Information Systems Cybersecurity Candidate,
December 2019
“I took my four Cisco Certified Network Associate courses
back in Venezuela in 2005 and never got around to taking the
certification exam. Knowing that I had to take at least two more
courses for my cybersecurity degree, I decided that I would
pursue those last two courses at Collin College. The Cisco courses at Collin helped me prepare for
the CCNA certification.
The Collin College program was the only one that was affordable
compared to a university. The availability of scholarships
helped me.”

“I was a young mom with 6-year-old and 9-year-old
children in school. I worked with a real estate agent in purchasing
a home in Plano and kept my existing home to lease out. I just closed my boutique and it was time for a new career,
so I enrolled in the real estate program at Collin College. My instructors were so sharp and
spoke on higher-level real estate subjects, such as wealth building and leverage when purchasing
rental homes. After graduating, I became a real estate agent with
Keller Williams. I’m currently a broker for more than 450
agents and operating principal for Keller Williams in Celina. Collin College has top-notch instructors to make sure you
have a competitive edge in your new career.”
A Collin College CREDIT course that is also offered THROUGH CONTINUING EDUCATION (CE) is referred to as a LINKED COURSE. Taught by credit professors, Linked Courses mix credit and non-credit students in the same learning environment, ensuring the same rigorous standards are met. Offered in areas as varied as computer technology, real estate, and health care, these courses provide college credit for credit students and continuing education units (CEUs) for continuing education students.
The admission process for CE students is quick and easy, but space is limited for select Linked Courses. Tuition for CE students has no residency requirement.

COMPUTER/TECHNOLOGY Java Developer Are you interested in developing and deploying apps on one of the most popular coding platforms? Gain practical, hands-on programming experience by adding interactivity and flexibility to websites and mobile applications using Java, JavaScript, jQuery, and more.
“After receiving my master’s degree in computer management, I worked in software development, testing, support, and implementation using Informix, Oracle, C, Unix, and Shell Scripting for 12 years before changing careers. Now, 13 years later, my career goal is to learn new technical skills and get back into Information Technology. I have taken three Java programming courses and one JavaScript course through Continuing Education. I learned the intricacies of writing and analyzing Java code. I plan to take Advanced JavaScript using jQuery and Angular JS Framework to further develop my skills, which are needed in a web or Java developer position. I am excited to begin this new chapter of my career.”

Professional Truck Driver
Commercial Driver’s License 2019 “I have worked as a driver’s
assistant at Ben E. Keith distribution for three years and
have aspired to taking on my own route and eventually owning
and operating my own truck as a professional truck driver.
When I first contacted the college regarding the requirements, I was very apprehensive that
my lack of previous knowledge would make me ineligible to
pursue the training. However, the instructors are very patient and are always very willing to work with students with no previous
experience. Thanks to Collin College and the Professional
Truck Driving instructors, I now have the skills I need to advance
my career.”
Put yourself behind the wheel of an in-demand career. Whether traveling regionally or across the country, commercial truck drivers spend the majority of their time driving the open highways. The transportation of goods and materials in a safe and timely fashion is vital to economic growth. Continuing Education offers classroom and hands-on Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training approved by the Department of Transportation.
