Bio
Throughout his early career, Song has received numerous awards as one of the premier representatives of Chi-
nese painting. With works displayed at international art exhibitions in the United States, Japan, Hong Kong,
Turkey, and Singapore, Song has a strong art market presence. He also had the honor of having four representa-
tive works collected and preserved at the National Art Museum of China (NAMOC) and three works at the
Jiangsu Provincial Art Museum.
In 1988, he immigrated to Canada and invested a passion for its vivid scenes of the broad North American
landscape. While there, he travelled widely from coast to coast. After 20 years forming his unique style of
brush and knife, Song has dedicated his undivided attention to the unique natural detail of light, shadow and
depth.
He currently lives by the lake in Toronto, Canada with his wife and son.

“Dawn”
“Dawn” is a 4” x 6” oil painting on wood panel by Xiao Song Jiang; painted En plein
air or in the open air- onsite at the harbor.
This miniature masterpiece conjures a mixed emotion of early light sentimentality
with crisp air and cool breathes. An overall cool color palette and minimal hue ar-
raignments, Jiang’s craftiness rests in his ability to make use of the token browns,
reds, blues and yellows to accentuate aspects of subject matters and natural aura. Part
knife, part brush; the quick gestures of the impressionistic qualities mimic an over-
obsessed manic capturing movement, emotion, and elegance.
Great detail was laid to rest in the harbor shimmering reflections of the vessel in the
morning light; godly grace that is peeking over the misty background brume.
With the horizon line set in the middle of the composition, Dawn’s yellow enflame
above the perfectly aligned masts and sails of the backgrounds fleet draws your eye up
into the expanding blue abyss. However, complementing this celestial sky is the recip-
rocating compositional base area anchored with glistening jest of reflective squiggles;
offering reflections adrift in chilly channel montages of calming waves of cool color.

MUSKOKA
“A rocky

watery abyss of
loneliness.”
“Muskoka”
A rocky buttress juts forth leading the viewer into the watery abyss of loneliness. A central element in
the figure/ground relationship, the seemingly abstract micro-levee is speckled with crops of hatched-in vege-
tation and water grasses. This angled outcropping of light colored earth tones abruptly ends at a buoyant but
eerily still flatboat canoe. The solo manmade component is reflecting an impressionistic rendition of itself
in the cerulean tones below, a watery and mirrored doppelganger void of the same personification as seen in
the desolate dinghy. Heavily accentuated and contrasting shadows made by the setting sun add a much
needed breath of richness to the lifeless vessel; an important element that acts as a connection point from the
pier to the various strata of tree-lined reflections and bands of monotone viridian horizon lines.
Placed in the upper eight of the overall picture, these strong parallel delineations rise from the lower right,
upside-down reflections to the yellow ochre autumn foliage which gleams in its seasonal beauty to darkened
emulations of coniferous canopy. The escalating rhythm is broken by a dominantly impasto-esque shoreline
of knee high grasses, a horizontal base for the majestic treetops of the Canadian wilderness; back-dropped
by the lilac brume of mountainous ambiguity. A bleached-out sky overcast with heavy atmospheric wintery
gloom pushes down on this fleeting light with threats of snow and artic temperament.

SAIL
“Sail” Choppy waters, looming clouds and tilted sail, all buildup to one thing – a possible disastrous recourse for one
lone sailboat. However, pockets of soothing cerulean sky peek out like a metaphysical mind’s third eye that
foreshadows a safe return to harbor.
“Sail” is a distinctive painting by X. Song Jiang, a Chinese born Canadian artist. A recent recipient of the
2012 Gold Medal Prize at the Oil Painters of America National Juried Exhibition at Evergreen Fine Art, Jiang
captures the essence of what it means to be mindful of the turbulent waters of Mother Nature’s open seas.
“Sail” is an impressionistic masterpiece that is anchored by the traditional triangle composition; made up by
sail and vessel, volleying on the waters slightly below the horizon line. With the sky capturing three fourths of
the picture plan we are reluctant to quiver in the presence of such forceful weather, an aggression that juxtapos-
es against the naturally serene qualities of sailing and being on the open waters --relaxing.
With a minimal color palette, Jiang uses almost a monotone and gloomy hue selection to reinforce the pending
change of course as this ship prepares to tackle some quick seaman navigations. With a deep blue pocket left of
center, this skewed focal point is balanced by the tip of the sail which leans to the right. Linear elements of the
sail, shroud and backstay are juxtaposed with the organic qualities captured in the cresting and breaking waves,
crashing against the hull.
