European Research CouncilWhat are the main ERC principles?• 1 researcher; 1 host institution; 1 project; 1 selection criterion:

scientific excellence• No consortia, no networks, no co-financing• Applications can be made in any field of research, including social

sciences and humanities• Independent researchers from anywhere in the world, of any age and

career stage can apply• Host institutions must provide conditions for the researcher to direct

the research and manage its funding• The grant is 'portable' to another host institution• Research must be carried out in one of the 28 EU member states or

associated countries

www.sspc.ie

What type of grants does the ERC fund?

1. ERC Starting Grant Deadline 3rd Feb 2015– for young, early-career top researchers (2-7 years after PhD) up to 2

million euro for a period of 5 years.

2. ERC Consolidator Grant Deadline 12th Mar 2015– for already independent excellent researchers 7-12 years after PhD) up

to 2.75 million euro for a period of 5 years.

3. ERC Advanced Grant Deadline 2nd June 2015– for senior research leaders with significant research achievements in the

last 10 years up to 3.5 million euro for a period of 5 years.

4. ERC Proof of Concept Grants Deadline 1st Oct 2015 – for ERC grant holders who want to check the market and/or innovation

potential of research results from ERC-projects -up to 150,000 euro for a period of 12 months.

MSCA Individual FellowshipsA personal fellowship to support mobility• For Experienced Researchers• Post-PhD or equivalent• No upper experience limit• No age limits• Fully-funded fellowships• Salary, research costs etc.• 2 fellowship types:• European FellowshipsIncludes Career Restart and Reintegration options – 1 to 2 years• Global Fellowships – 2 to 3 years, including 1 year back in Europe

MSCA Innovative Training Networks

A typical Innovative Training Network (ITN) is a consortium of host organisations from the academic and non-academic sectors. Deadline 13th January 2015There are 3 types of ITN:

1. European Training Network2. European Industrial Doctorate3. European Joint Doctorate

www.sspc.ie

European Training Network (ETN)

1. European Training Networks (ETN)– Typical consortium size 6 to 10 participants (minimum is

three participants in at least three different Member States or Associated countries).

– The Beneficiaries who form the core of the consortium should include a mix of participants from the academic and non-academic sectors. Additional participants can get involved as Partner organisations.

– The project can fund doctoral and/or masters’ degree students.

– Project Duration 4 years.– Typical Project Budget €3 – 5 million.

Typical ETN

• Consortium of organisations from different countries and sectors;

1. Beneficiaries: recruit researchers2. Partner Organisations: host secondments/provide training

• Propose a joint research programme• Recruit researchers across the consortium– each researcher has an Individual Research Project• Advanced research skills and complementary skills training• Networking events• Secondments for each researcher to another sector(academic to non-academic, or vice-versa)

www.sspc.ie

European Industrial Doctorates (EID)

2. European Industrial Doctorates (EID)• The minimum consortium size is one academic

Beneficiary and one non-academic Beneficiary from two different Member States or Associated Countries.

• Other participants from any sector can be added if required, either as Beneficiaries or Partner Organisations.

• The researchers must spend at least 50% of their time working in the non-academic sector.

• Project Duration 4 years.• Typical Project Budget €1 – €5 million.

European Joint Doctorates (EJD)• European Joint Doctorates (EJD)• Typical consortium size 6 to 10 participants (minimum is three

academic participants in at least three different Member States or Associated countries).

• The Beneficiaries who form the core of the consortium can include a mix of participants from the academic and non-academic sectors. Additional participants can get involved as Partner organisations.

• The project can fund doctoral students only and upon completion of the EJD programme, a researcher must receive a joint, double or multiple doctoral degree.

• Project Duration 4 years.• Typical Project Budget €3 – 5 million.

MSCA RISEPromoting transfer of knowledgebetween countries and sectors• Research programme executed by:• Exchange of “staff” around the consortium(Duration 1 month to 1 year)• Networking activities• Collaborate with any sector and anycountry worldwide• Per Researcher/Month:

• €2000 for travel costs• €2500 networking, management, etc.

• 57% of Irish participations in 2014 Callwere funded

www.sspc.ie

MSCA RISE Requirements

• Project duration 48 months• Minimum consortium 3 participants in 3 countries

1. 2 academic participants plus 1 non-academic (or vice versa)2. 2 European participants plus 1 non-European participant

• Secondments:• “Staff” must be active at their host for 6 months before secondment• Must be reintegrated after secondment (no duration or mechanism specified)• All secondments within Europe must be international &

intersectoral

www.sspc.ie

MSCA RISE Secondments• Secondments from Europe to non-European countries are paid for• Secondments from most non-European countries to Europe are paid for, except:

• Secondments from high-income countries e.g. USA, Brazil

• All countries are funded to participate in the project’s networking/training events
