Structure of the Subjunctive

Structure of the SubjunctiveThe structure of the subjunctive is extremely simple. For all verbs except the past tense of be, the subjunctive is the same as the bare infinitive (infinitive without "to"):

be (past) be (present) all other verbs (past & present)

Use of the Subjunctive

We use subjunctives mainly when talking about events that are not certain to happen. For example, we use the subjunctive when talking about events that somebody:

- wants to happen - hopes will happen - imagines happening

Jack and the Beanstalk Once upon a time, there was a boy called Jack. He lived with his mother. They were very poor. All they had was a cow. One morning, jack went to the market to sell a cow. On the way, a man gave Jack some magic been for the cow. Jack took the beans and

went home. When Jack’s mother saw the____(1)beans_____,

she was so angry that she threw them out the window.

Next morning, Jack look out the window and saw giant__(2)beanstalk____ He went outside and

started to climb the beanstalk. He climbed up to the sky through the cloud. Jake saw a beautiful castle and went inside. Jack hard a voice “Fee,Fi,Fo,Fum!” Jack run into the cupboard. A giant come into the room and appreciated the hen and the golden harp. “Lay!” said the giant.

The hen laid the__golden egg__(3)____. “Sing!” said the giant. The harp began to sing until

the giant fell asleep. Jack jumped out of the cupboard and took the hen and

the harp. Suddenly, _golden harp(4)_____ sang “help!” The giant woke up and

shouted,”Fee,Fi,Fo,Fum!” Jack climb down the beanstalk and the giant came after him. Jack shouted,

“Help!” His mother came and cropped down the beanstalk with an axe. The giant fell and crashed to the ground. Jack and his mother lived happily ever

after.
