Chapter 1 - PrefaceWelcome to Wright Design Pro, the innovative software package that lets you
handle image manipulation, illustration and text with speed and simplicity.
SummaryThis Tutorial is designed to show you some of the features of the package and to
get you familiar with basic design strategies.
About this Tutorial
This Tutorial gives you an overall understanding of Wright Design Pro and isdesigned for both novice and expert users.
The entire Tutorial consists of three projects:
• The Sun project.
• The World project.
• The Fiji project.
Each project is divided into a series of lessons providing detailed step-by-step
instructions. They enable you to carry out both basic and advanced imagingtechniques.
It is suggested that you go through each project from start to finish. This allows
you to gain an understanding of the application as a whole.
When you have gained general working knowledge of the application and want toconcentrate on specific tasks you can revisit specific sections of the three
Tutorials. For example, if you want to blend images together, re-do Lessons one
to three in the Sun Project; if you require color masking you could revisit Lesson
Four of the Sun Project called The Frame.
Tutorial Requirements
To use the Tutorial Guide you need to have installed Wright Design Pro according
to the instructions on your CD.
All the lessons are based on the sample images that come with the CD.
Instructions on how to access the images are provided in the course of the
lessons.
For additional information about various tasks in the Tutorial Guide, refer to the
User Guide or access the Online Help through the program’s Help menu.
This Tutorial Guide does not assume that you have knowledge of other graphics
programs. It does, however, assume that you are familiar with the Windowsenvironment and standard Windows functions. If you need to review these,
consult your Windows documentation.

System Conventions
For a complete description of system functionality, please refer to the WrightDesign Pro User Guide. However there are two items that you should be aware of
before using this guide.
The Task Manager palette allows you to view the processes within the Wright
Design Pro application. Because graphics processing can take a long period of
time, it is a useful tool to check on the progression of tasks.
The second indicator of the application processing a task is the Processing
Indicator. When a task is processing, this indicator appears in the status bar, and
revolves to indicate that processing is occurring. This indicator appears even if
you don’t have the Task Manager palette open.
Tutorial Guide Styles
• Information that you must enter yourself appears in the following format:
Enter the Information.
• Information displayed on or by Wright Design Pro appears as: Paint Style
palette, or select OK. This style applies to menus, objects on your work page, buttons, icons and tools.
• Menu selections are displayed in the following format: Choose File >
Preferences > Preferences.
• Keyboard shortcuts or keystrokes are in the format: press CTRL+I.
• -The term drag indicates the standard Windows function of moving screens
or objects.

Starting a New DocumentThis lesson shows you:
• How to create a new document.
• Introduces you to Wright Design Pro’s interface.
Creating a New Document1. When you open Wright Design Pro the screen is blank.
2. To create a new document choose File > New or press CTRL+N. The
New Document dialog box appears.
3. Type Sun Project into the Name edit box. The Comments edit box
allows you to enter comments about the document and store these with
the document. Leave this box blank.
4. In the Paper Size combo box click on the arrow to the right, scroll
down the list and select A4.
When you select a standard paper size such as A4, the width and height
dimensions appear automatically. To customize the paper size to your own
specification, double click the Dimensions edit boxes to highlight thedimension and key in the new values.
5. Do not click the Landscape box.
6. Set the Top, Left, Bottom and Right Margins to 0mm.
7. Set the Output resolution to 300 dpi.

Clicking the right mouse button in the Output Resolution edit boxdisplays the following resolution measurement options:
pixels/mm - pixels per millimeter
pixels/cm - pixels per centimeter
dpi - dots per inch
8. Click OK. A blank page displays centered within the desktop.
The DesktopThe Wright Design Pro desktop has two parts:
• The Page area is the white rectangular area bound with a drop shadow.
This is the printable area.
• The Pasteboard is the area surrounding the page. Objects you create and
place on the Pasteboard are saved with the document but do not print.
For examples of the page layouts, please refer to the Wright Design Pro User
Guide, Chapter Two - The Interface.
Displaying the PalettesThe first task is to prepare the work environment. By default, Wright Design Prodisplays the Tool palette on the desktop. You may position the Tool palette
anyplace on the Page or Pasteboard.
The Paint Style palette is displayed by default when you create a New
Document. The Paint Style palette can also be accessed through the menu by
choosing Window > Palettes > Paint Style or press F2.

Ensure the Auto-apply and Auto-load checkboxes are selected. When Auto-
apply is selected, any changes you make in the Paint Style palette appear automatically in the selected object on the page. Selecting Auto-load displays the
paint styles of a selected object in the Paint Style palette.

The Paint Styles
Take a moment now to get to know the eleven different Paint Styles.
To display the Pen Style palette choose Window > Palettes > Pen Style or
press F3.
To display the Brush Gallery choose Window > Palettes > Brush Gallery or
press F4. The picture below shows an example of brushes that have been saved to
the Brush Gallery.
To display the Object List choose Window > Palettes > Object List or press
F6. The example of an Object List displayed below shows some of the objectsused to create a picture. The Object List for the current project is empty, as you
haven’t created any objects on the page yet.

To display the Navigator palette choose Window > Palettes > Navigator or
press F7. The example of the Navigator palette displayed below shows how your
Navigator palette will look when you have completed the Sun Tutorial. Currently
the Navigator palette displays your empty page.
To display the Spot Colors palette choose Window > Palettes > Spot Colors or
press F9. The Spot Colors palette shows all spot colors on a page. When you
move the cursor over a particular spot color, the Spot Color palette displays the
Dot Percentage of that spot color.

To display the Document Layout palette choose Window > Palettes >
Document Layout or press F10. The Document Layout palette shows all the
pages in the current document.

To display the Text Styles palette choose Window > Palettes > Text Styles or
press F11. The Text Styles palette is split into two sections; the top sectiondisplays paragraph styles and the bottom section Character styles. The palettedisplays all default or user defined Text Styles used in the current document.
To display the Picture Dot% palette choose Window > Palettes > Picture
Dot% or press SHIFT+F12. When you move the cursor over any part of an
object, the Picture Dot% palette shows the color format of the original object inthe Pic field and the current color format of the object in the Doc Field. This
allows you to see where the original object has been modified.
It is important to note throughout this Tutorial that you use multiple
palettes and menu effects to create the characteristics of an object. For
example, to create the Sun text in this Tutorial you are going to use:
• The Text options and tools
• The Paint Style palette
• The Object >Shadow menu option
You can place each palette anywhere on the page by clicking on its title bar and
dragging it into position. However, you may find it more helpful to arrange the
Paint Style palette on the right of the Pasteboard and the Object List at the
bottom left of the Pasteboard. The other palettes are not needed at this stage of
the Tutorial.
Wright Design Pro records which palettes are open when the program is closed
down. When the program is run again the palettes are re-displayed.

The Tool PaletteThe Tool palette contains tools for:
• Selecting objects
• Viewing objects
• Creating objects
• Editing objects
• Controls for aligning objects
• Tools for creating gradients
• Tools for creating masks
• Tools for painting
•
Tools for cloning objects
The Tool palette can be moved around the screen and shaped to suit your needs. It
is also possible to dock your Tool palette anywhere around the outside of the
Wright Design Pro screen. Tool Icons with a red triangle in the top right corner
indicate a tool Flyout that reveals a group of related tools. Click the right mouse
button on the tool to display the Flyout and select the tool of your choice. This tool
becomes the operational tool.
The tool Flyouts can be torn away to create a separate Toolbar. To create a tear-
away Toolbar, activate the tool Flyout and select the gray area surrounding the
outside of the Flyout. A temporary Keyline appears. Move this away from theTool palette and release your finger from the mouse. You now have a separate
Toolbar that can be moved or docked anywhere around the outside of your
Wright Design Pro screen.

The appearance of your Toolbars may differ from the examples above
depending on how you have placed and configured them.
The Tool Modifier Ribbon
The Tool Modifier ribbon is located below the menu. It holds options for each of
the main tools in the Tool palette except the Grab, Eyedropper and Zoom tools.
This is how the Tool Modifier ribbon looks when the Select tool is active.

The Transform Modifiers
The Transform Modifiers are the first three Icons appearing on the Tool Modifier
ribbon when the Select tool is active.
Select entire object: When selected, any transformations you make, applyto both the shape and the layers.
Select shape only: When selected any transformation applies to the shape
only.
Select layers only: When selected, any transformation applies to the layer only. The layer is the paint style within the object.
Two Important Points to Note: • You may occasionally get some residue from previous work on your
Desktop. To clean it up select View > Refresh Display or press
CTRL+7.
• You can work faster if the Interpolate Bitmaps and Anti-Alias
Vectors commands in the View menu are turned off. These two
commands enhance the screen display but also slow it down. They
are useful for previewing your work before you print or export a file.

Placing, Positioning and ScalingPicturesIn this lesson you are going to modify the Seascape picture and the Diver
picture. Each picture will occupy half the page. You are going to place these
images using two different but interchangeable methods:
• The Place Picture command from the File Menu
• The Picture Paint Style in the Paint Style palette.
• Learn how to resize and crop the objects.
• Learn to use guides to align objects.
Opening the Sun Project Final Picture1. Choose File > Place Picture or press CTRL+I. The Place dialog box is
displayed.
2. If you selected the default path at installation time and haven’t changed the
file paths, the path for the Tutorial pictures, is:
C:\Program\Files\DesignPro\Tutorial\Project\Images.
3. To change the default folder path, click on the arrow to the right of the Look
in combo box and select the folder path that that contains the Tutorial
pictures.

4. For this Tutorial use the JPG file format. Select the JPG file format from the
Files of Type combo box by clicking on the arrow to the right of the list, andscrolling either up or down until the JPG format appears.
5. Double-click on the thumbnail called Sunfinal. The picture is loaded in the
center of your page. This picture is the final result of the Sun Project Tutorial,
which you can use as a reference throughout the lessons.
6. Select the Select tool from the Tool palette and the Select entire object
and Scale modifiers from the Tool Modifier ribbon.

To Position the Final Picture for Reference
1. Hold the SHIFT key down and click on one of the highlighted corner Nodes.
2. Keeping the left mouse button depressed, drag the image inwards (towards
the opposite diagonal corner).
3. Observe the figures in the X% and Y% boxes in the Tool Modifier ribbon.
These indicate the percentage that the image is decreasing. Keep decreasing
the image until it is approximately 50% of its original size.
4. Place the cursor over the picture then click and drag it to the top left-hand
corner of your screen, into the Pasteboard area.
5. Deselect the picture by clicking into free space or by pressing
CTRL+SHIFT+A.
Placing a GuideTo ensure the pictures are of equal size, place a guide halfway down the page. A
guide is a visual reference marker and does not appear in the final image.
Displaying the Rulers
1. To create a guide you need to have the rulers visible. If the rulers are
displayed go to Step 4.
2. To display the rulers choose Guides > Show Rulers or press CTRL + ALT
+ R .
3. The rulers appear along the top and left borders of the desktop. The ruler
displays measurements according to the measurement unit you have selected
in File > Preferences > Document >General.
4. To change the Units of Measurement choose File > Preferences >
Document >General, click on the arrow next to the Measurement Units
combo box, select millimeters and click OK .
The default position for the ruler origin (zero point) on both rulers is at
the top left of the page.

Creating a Guide
1. Guides are horizontal and vertical lines to help you set out the page.
2. By looking down the left ruler you can see that the page is 297 mm long. A
Guide needs to be placed halfway down the page.
3. Choose Guides > Show Guides or press CTRL + M. When the Guides are
displayed, the drop down menu displays Hide Guides.
4. Choose Guides > Snap to Rulers or press CTRL + ALT + A. This causes
the cursor to snap to the increments shown on your ruler.
5. With any tool selected from the Tool palette, click in the top ruler and drag a
guide down the page, positioning it approximately at the 148 mm mark on
the left ruler.
A red Guide is being used in this Tutorial so that it stands out against the
blue of the sea in the picture about to be placed. To change the color of Guides, select File > Preferences > Application > Guides. Click on
the colored box to the right of Guides and move the CMY sliders to obtain
the color you want.
Placing the Seascape Picture The first picture to import is a seascape. The picture has to be scaled so that it fits
into the top half of the page. Once the picture is placed it shall be referred to as an
object.
1. Choose File > Place Picture or press CTRL+I. The Place dialog box opens.
Select the JPG format.
2. Double-click on the thumbnail called Seascape.jpg.

3. Processing involves converting the foreign file into DCM Picture file format
(.dcm;.spl) and placing the picture onto your Page. After the file hasfinished processing the picture is placed into the center of your Page.
Notice that the Seascape picture appears in the Paint Style palette and in
the Navigator palette. Its name also appears in the Object List palette with
an icon next to it and a description of the object type. If you select theSunfinal picture on the Pasteboard, and Auto-load has been selected in
the Paint Style Palette, the image in the Paint Style palette changes to
the Sunfinal picture.
Enlarging the ObjectYou now need to increase the size of the object so that it fills the page area above
the guide. One of the ways to do this is by using the X% and Y% boxes in theTool Modifier ribbon.
1. Select the Select tool from the Tool palette.
2. Select the Select entire object and Scale icons from the Tool Modifier
ribbon.

Notice that as you move the object into position, only the outline moves.
When you release the mouse the whole picture is visible. If you want to
view the object as it moves choose View > Preview Transforms. Beaware that using this command generally slows down your work.

Cropping the ObjectThe object has to be cropped to remove the parts overhanging either side of the
page.
1. Select the Vector Rectangle tool from the Tool palette and the Crop
modifier from the Tool Modifier ribbon.
2. Click on the top left corner of your working page (not including the
Pasteboard), and drag a bounding box to the right hand side of your page,
approximately 20 mm under the guide.
3. When you release the mouse the object appears as cropped as shown below.
To move the object precisely within the page choose the Select tool
from the Tool Palette and use the arrow keys to nudge the object into
place one screen pixel at a time.
4. Deselect the object by clicking away from the selected object or press
CTRL+SHIFT+A
5. Select File > Save or press CTRL+S to save your document.
Placing the Diver Picture Next, the Diver picture has to be placed on the bottom half of the page.
This time the picture is going to be placed into an object by using the Vector
Rectangle tool and the Paint Style palette. Also the Convert option is used to
convert the file into a Wright Design Pro DCM format
The first step is to convert the Diver JPG picture into Wright Design Pro’s DCM
picture file format.

Converting the Pictures
1. Choose File > Convert Picture or press CTRL+B. The Convert dialog boxopens. Select the JPG format by clicking on the arrow to the right of the Files
of type combo box.
2. Select the pictures you want to convert. For this demonstration select all of
the pictures for the Tutorials, except the two pictures that have already been
used (Sunfinal and Seascape). Hold the CTRL key down to select multiple
files.
3. Use the Save in… edit box to specify the location where the files are to be
saved.
4. To change the files to Wright Design Pro DCM (.dcm) format, select
.dcm;.spl from the As type combo box.
5. Change the color model to CYMK by selecting CYMK from the Color combo
box.
6. Click the Convert button.
7. The files are converted into .dcm files and stored in the specified folder.
Creating a Vector Rectangle with the Diver Picture
1. Select the Select tool from the Tool palette.
2. In the Paint Style palette, select the Fill button at the top left of the palette,
and then select the Picture Paint Style tab.
Notice that the Picture icon appears next to the Fill button.

4. Double-click on the Diver picture that you have just converted into DCM
format. The picture is loaded into the Picture Paint Style palette preview box.
5. Select the Vector Rectangle tool from the Tool palette and the New
Modifier from the Tool Modifier ribbon.
6. Ensure that the Snap to Guides function is still active, if it isn’t, select it by
choosing Guides > Snap to Guides or pressing CTRL + SHIFT + M.
7. Position the Cross-hair at the left hand side of the page under the Guide and
drag a rectangle to the bottom right corner of the page.
8. When you release the cursor the Diver picture appears centered inside the
rectangle.
9. Choose Guides > Snap to Guides or press CTRL + SHIFT + M to turn the
Snap to Guides function off.

Merging PicturesThe Alpha Channel mode is a way of controlling the opacity of the object. Here,it is used to blend the Seascape object smoothly into the Diver object. The
bottom edge of the Seascape object and the top edge of the Diver object will
be diffused, giving the impression that they merge into each other. The rest of the
pictures remain opaque as before.
Using Alpha Channels
Ensure that the Select tool is selected in the Tool palette.
Applying a Gradient to the Diver Object1. Select the Diver object by clicking it on the page, or by selecting it from the
Object List.
2. Choose Object > Vignette, to display the Vignette dialog box.
3. Ensure the Gradient shape combo box is set to Linear.
4. Check the Smooth box.
5. Ensure the bottom Slider on the Gradient Control box is selected.
6. Click to the right of the Gradient Control box approximately 5mm down
from the top Slider to add another Slider. If you have the Auto-apply option
selected in the Vignette dialog box, the Gradient Alpha Channel mode isnow applied to the Diver object. If Auto-apply is not selected click on the
Apply button.
7. Click the OK button. The Paint Style palette now shows the Alpha Channel
vignette as a layer below the Picture Paint style.

Applying a Gradient to the Seascape picture
1. Ensure the Select tool is active in the Tool palette.

3. Choose Object > Vignette to display the Vignette dialog box.
4. Ensure the Gradient Style is set to Linear and that the Smooth box is
checked.
5. Right click anywhere inside the Gradient area on the Paint Style palette. A

6. The Gradient is now inverted. The gradation at the top is now at the bottom
and the gradation at the bottom is now at the top.7. Ensure the bottom Slider on the Gradient Control Box is selected. Click to
the right of the Gradient Control Box approximately 5mm down from the
top Slider to add another Slider. If you have the Auto-apply option selected
in the Vignette dialog box the Gradient Alpha Channel mode is now
applied to the Diver picture. If it is not selected, click on the Apply button.
8. Click OK. The two objects should now blend smoothly together. To fine-tune
the blending, adjust the Gradient slider in the Alpha channel for each
object until you are satisfied with the overall result.

11. Remove the guide by dragging it back into the top Ruler.

Color Masking the Frame1. Ensure the Frame object is selected.
2. Select the Color Mask tool from the Tool palette.
3. Select the Add modifier from the Tool Modifier ribbon. This allows youto start color masking and to keep adding to the mask.
4. Click on the background of the Frame. The Paint Style palette adds a new
Color Mask layer to the Picture layer.
5. Set the Softness slider to a low tolerance, either 4 or 5.
6. Try applying the five different Picture modes by selecting the background
area of the Frame object with the Color Mask tool and clicking on aPicture mode. For example, Picture mode 2 gives you a black color mask.

Using the Brush Tool to Fine-tune theMaskThe Mask build process sometimes leaves unwanted pixels, or drops pixels out of
the picture. The Brush and Zoom tools are used to rectify any problems.
Zooming
1. Ensure the Frame object is selected.
2. Select the Zoom tool from the Tool palette.
3. Drag a rectangle over the top left corner of the Frame object.
Brushing1. Select the Brush tool from the Tool palette and the Subtract modifier
in the Tool Modifier ribbon.
2. For this operation you need a small precise brush. Set the Brush Modifier
ribbon as follows:
1. Size: 5mm (width of the brush)
2. Hardness: 0 (the amount of feathering on the edge of the brush)
3. Spacing: 12% (the spacing between brush strokes)
4. Opacity: 100% (amount of transparency at the center of the brush)
5. Round: 100% (degree of roundness)
6. Angle: 0 (angle of the brush)
7. Texture: 1 (amount of texture in the brush)
8. Resolution: 11.81 ppmm (resolution of the brush stroke)

4. Using the Brush tool brush away the unwanted areas. If you accidentally
remove part of the frame, select Edit > Undo or press CTRL + Z, or selectthe add modifier from the Tool Modifier ribbon and brushing back the
Frame. This process also adds pixels back to the picture that may have
dropped out.
To reposition your page within the screen area you can either:
• Press the SPACEBAR to center your page at the position of the cursor.
• Select the Grab tool from the Tool palette and scroll your page.
5. Choose View > Fit Page in Window or press CTRL + 0 to return to the
normal view.

Cutting out the Top Portion of the SailsTo give the appearance of the sails protruding from the top of the frame, the
Boats picture is going to be reloaded into the page and the top portion of the sails
cut out and attached to the first Boats object.
Using the Navigator Palette
As this task requires close up work, it is easier if you zoom into the part of the
image you are working on. This time you are going to use the Navigator palette
to zoom in.
1. If the navigator palette isn’t currently displayed, choose Window > Palettes
> Navigator, or press F7.
2. Place the cursor over the Navigator palette.
3. Click and drag a bounding box around the frame. This is known as theViewport. The selected area fills the desktop.
To move the Viewport around the Navigator palette, drag it by one of
the four borders. Moving it around changes the part of the picture
displayed on your desktop Page.
4. To increase or decrease the zoom effect use the Zoom tool located in the
Tool palette. Click on the page with the Zoom tool to zoom in, hold the
SHIFT key down to zoom out.

Using the Bitmap Polygon Tool and Crop Modifier
The Bitmap and Vector Polygon tools, together with the Crop modifier, allowyou to cut out irregular shapes. In this example the Bitmap Polygon tool and the
Crop modifier are used to cut out the sails.
1. Load another Boats picture by choosing File > Place Picture, or pressCTRL+I. Double click on the Boats picture.
2. Use the Navigator palette zoom in on the top of the sails.
3. Select the Bitmap Curved Polygon tool from the Tool palette and the
Crop modifier from the Tool Modifier ribbon.
4. Click on the top of the left sail. A point appears on the edge of the sail.
5. Trace along the outline of the sails, plotting points as you go.

Notice that the cutout tool is actually a curved line. This line bends as you
plot the points. When you require a corner, hold down the SHIFT key andclick a point. As you plot around the sails, press the SPACEBAR to center the page from the cursor position
6. Follow the edge of the picture on the right side approximately half way
down. Then come straight across the picture to the edge of the left sail and
back up to the top.
7. When you reach the starting point, the cross-hair changes to an arrow. Click again to create a cropped bitmap object.
8. If at any time you wish to stop using this tool or start again, press ESC.
9. Choose View > Select Fit in Window or press CTRL+O to see the whole
page plus the new bitmap cutout.
Joining the Boats Objects
1. Ensure the cutout of the sails is selected.
2. Select the Align and Join tool from the Tool palette.
3. Ensure the Join modifier icon and Move Object radio button are selected in
the Tool Modifier ribbon.
4. Click on the Boats object in the Frame to join the objects and layers
together.

Airbrushing the Palm Trees Near the SailsUsing the Airbrush tool some of the palm tree out of the picture is brushed back
over the frame to blend the frame, sails and palms.
1. Select the cutout of the Boats object in the Object List palette or on the
page.
If you are having trouble distinguishing objects in the Object List palette,right click anywhere inside the Object List and a drop down menu will
appear. Scroll down and select Large Icons to make the picture
thumbnails more visible.

Using the Bezier ToolFine-tune the shape of the flower by manipulating Bezier curves using the
Beizier tool. A vector object is made up of points that define the object’s
outline. By using the Bezier tool you can modify the object’s outline.
1. Ensure the Flower object is selected.
2. Select the Bezier tool in the Tool palette.
3. Nodes appear around the edges of the petals. As you position a cursor over a
node the cursor changes to a black arrowhead.
4. Select and drag a node outwards if the petal needs extending. Extending
outwards adds more of the petal picture.
5. When you drag a node Bezier handles appear. Click and drag on the handles
to manipulate the object shape.
6. When you select the Bezier tool and you have a node selected, the Bezier
Modifier ribbon gives you a number of node and line style options to control
the object curve:
• Cusp allows you to move one side of the node independently of the
other. This allows the curve to bend sharply.
• Smooth allows you to move one side of the node as a proportion of
the other. This allows the curve to have a different curvature on each
side of the node.
• Symmetrical allows you to move both sides of the curve equally. This
means the curve has the same curvature on both sides of the node.
7. If the background picture is showing around a petal, drag the node inwards
to trim off the picture.
8. Choose View > Fit Page in Window or press CTRL + 0 to Zoom out to a
normal view
Scrolling and Positioning the Flower
1. Choose the Select tool from the Tool palette. Ensure the Flower object is
still selected.
2. Select the Select entire object and Scale modifiers in the Tool Modifier
ribbon.
3. Holding the SHIFT key click on one of the corner handles and drag outwards
to scale the Flower up to approximately 133%. Refer to the X% and Y%
boxes in the Tool Modifier ribbon.
4. Distort the Flower slightly by dragging the top center handle up.
5. Place the cursor over the Flower object, then click and drag to position the
Flower as shown below.

Vignette the Flower Use the Alpha Channel mode to vignette the flower and change it from opaque
in the center to transparent at the edges.
1. Ensure the Flower is still selected.
2. In the Paint Style palette make sure the Fill button is selected. Select the
first Fill layer in the Paint Style palette.
3. Click on the Add button to add another layer.
4. Select the first Fill layer in the Paint Style palette.
5. Select the Gradient tab in the Paint Style palette. Ensure the Alpha color

This procedure is similar to the one used in cutting out the Flower. The exception
is that instead of using the Vector Curved Polygon tool, you are going to use the
Bitmap Curved Polygon tool. This generates a bitmap object as opposed to avector object.
1. Ensure the Shell object is selected.
2. Choose the Bitmap Curved Polygon tool from the Tool palette and the
Crop modifier in the Tool Modifier ribbon.
3. Plot points around the edge of the shell. Remember that to plot a corner you

Positioning the Shell
1. Select the Select tool from the Tool palette.
2. Ensure the Select entire object and Scale icons are selected in the Tool
Modifier ribbon.
3. Hold down the SHIFT key, select one of the corner handles and drag it
inwards to scale the object down to 63%, or enter 63 in each of the X% andY% boxes in the Tool Modifier ribbon.
4. With the Shell object still selected, place the cursor over the shell and click
and drag it to the bottom left of the page as shown below.
5. Choose the Rotate modifier in the Tool Modifier ribbon.
6. Position the cursor on one of the corner handles. The cursor turns into a
rotating arrow. Click and drag on the handle to turn the Shell anticlockwise
approximately 40 degrees, until the open end of the Shell overlaps the
Frame object.
The degree of rotation is displayed in the R Edit box in the Tool Modifier
ribbon. You may also set the degree of rotation by entering the figure into
this box.

Applying a Drop Shadow1. The Shadow option lets you apply a precision drop shadow that is linked to
the original object.
2. With the Shell object selected, choose Object > Shadow or press CTRL+H
to display the Shadow dialog box.
3. Set the X: and Y: Offsets at 5mm
4. Enter 47 pix in the Feather box
5. Check the Smooth box
6. Ensure Both Sides is selected.
When you enter a value in the Feather box, the corresponding
measurement unit appears in the box at the other end of the Radius slider.Conversely, you can enter a measurement unit and the corresponding
pixel value appears in the Pixels box. This allows you to define the
feathering effect in either pixels or by direct measurement.
7. Click OK.
Notice the soft edge to the Drop-shadow. This is the effect of the
feathering setting you entered previously. If the number of pixels were
higher, the edge of the shadow would be even softer, if the number was
lower, the result would be a harder, straighter edge on the shadow.

The Shadow appears as a separate object in the Object List palette. However,
the Shadow is grouped with the original Shell object. The Shell object is the
parent and the Shadow object is the child.
Whenever you move or transform the Shell object, for example rotate it, the
Shadow object moves or transforms accordingly. However, anything you do to
the child (Shadow object) does not affect the parent. Right clicking on the
Object List and selecting Grouped Objects Together displays the Shadow
object within the Shell object in the Object List.

Creating a Vector Circle1. Select the Vector Ellipse tool from the Tool palette and the New

2. The fill in the circle you are about to create is defined by whatever is selected
in the Paint Style palette. To help show you how to transfer color into the
circle using the Eyedropper tool, make the circle a completely different
color to the color displayed at the moment (which is the color used in the
SUN text object).
3. Ensure the Fill button is selected in the Paint Style palette and select the
Tint Paint Style.
4. Click on the arrow to the right of the Color Model combo box and select the
CMYK color model.
5. Click on the Rainbow Color Picker tab and select a deep green color by
clicking on the Rainbow Color Palette.
6. Hold down the SHIFT key and drag a circle approximately 30mm in
diameter on your page next to the N in the SUN text object.

Using the Eyedropper Tool1. Ensure the Vector Ellipse circle is still selected. Select the Eyedropper tool
from the Tool palette.
2. Click on the yellow SUN text. The Paint Style palette displays the Tint
Paint Style showing the same yellow color.
3. The same Paint Style is applied automatically to the circle if you have
Auto-apply selected in your Paint Style palette. If not, click the Apply
button in your Paint Style palette.
Drawing the Teeth
1. You use the Vector Straight Polygon tool to draw the teeth around theVector Ellipse circle.
2. Select the Vector Straight Polygon tool from the Tool palette and the
New modifier from the Tool Modifier ribbon.
3. Click anywhere along the inside edge of the circle.
4. Move the cursor out 5mm at an angle of approximately 45 degrees and click.

Printing a PostScript FileIn this lesson you learn:
• How to create a PostScript file.
• How to print a PostScript file. In this case you will print lithographic
positives at a screen frequency of 150.
Setting the Print PostScript Options1. Choose File > Print or press CTRL + P to display the Print dialog box.
2. Select the PostScript printer you require by clicking on the arrow to the right
of the Name combo box. The drop-down menu shows a list of printers that
are setup on your computer.
3. Select the Interpolate Bitmaps, Interpolate Pictures and Anti-Alias
Vectors check boxes.
Interpolate Bitmaps interpolates the edges of bitmaps. Interpolate
Pictures interpolates the interior of pictures (vectors or bitmaps). Anti-
alias Vectors smoothes out vector objects that may need to be rasterized.
4. Select the PostScript check box.
5. Select the Separations check box. Note that the information in the Settings
area at the bottom of the dialog box is altered.

Setting the Layout Options1. Select the Options button to display the Layout dialog box.

Emulsion is the photosensitive layer on film or photographic paper. When
you choose Wrong Reading the type looks back to front when the
photosensitive layer is facing you.

5. Select Euclidian in the Spot Function combo box.
6. Ensure the screen frequency for each separation is set at 150 (the default
setting). Screen frequency is the number of lines of halftone dots per inch.

Creating a Background PictureIn this lesson you:
• Place a picture using the Open Picture command.

Placing the Background PictureIn the Sun Project you learned two ways to place pictures - the Place Picture
command in the File menu and placing a picture from the Pictures paint style
into aVector
object.Both these methods placed a picture onto a page. Here you use the Open Picture
command, which opens the selected picture and creates a document to the size of
the picture.
1. Choose File > Open Picture, or press Ctrl + 0. The Open Picture
dialog box is displayed.
2. If you selected the default path at installation time and haven’t changed
the file path, the path for the Tutorial pictures is:
C:\Program\Files\DesignPro\Tutorial\Images
To change the default folder path, click on the arrow to the right of the Look in
combo box and select the folder path that that contains the Tutorial pictures.
3. Double-click the thumbnail picture called Bground.dcm. A new
document is created with the Bground picture occupying the whole page
area. The page size is A4.

Displaying the Palettes
If your palettes are not already displayed:
1. Choose Window > Palettes > Paint Style, or press F2 to display the

2. Ensure the Auto-apply checkbox is selected. Auto-apply means that anychanges to an object made in the Paint Style palette appear automatically in
the object. Auto-load means that whenever you select an object, its Layers

Placing the Final Picture
To place the final picture to use as a reference as you are doing the Tutorial.
1. Choose File > Place Picture, or pres Ctrl+I. The Place Picture dialog box
is displayed showing a gallery of pictures similar to the Open Picture
screen.
2. Double-click on the thumbnail picture called Wldfinal.dcm. This picture
appears in the center of the screen. This is the final result of this Tutorial.
3. Choose the Select tool in the Tool palette and then select the Select
entire object and Scale modifiers in the Tool Modifier ribbon.
4. Hold the SHIFT key down, click on one of the corner handles and drag it
inwards to reduce the object to approximately 40% of its original size.

Vignette the Background Picture
Using the Alpha Channel mode, a gradient is added to the picture to vignette it:
1. Select the Select tool from the Tool palette.
2. Select the Background object.
3. In the Paint Style palette ensure the Fill style is selected and click the Add
button to add another layer.
4. Select the first of the two Paint Style layers and select the Gradient paint
style.
5. Click on the arrow to the right of the Color Model combo box and select
Alpha.
6. Click on the arrow to the right of the Gradient shape combo box and select
Linear.
7. Right click on the Paint Style palette and select Reset Gradient from the
drop down menu.
8. Select the Sliders color picker.
9. Check the Smooth checkbox.
10. Invert the Gradient by right clicking on the Paint Style palette and selecting
Invert Gradient from the drop down menu.
11. Click to the right of the Gradient control box two thirds of the way down to
add a slider.
12. Move the Alpha Channel slider to 49%.

6. In the Modifier ribbon change to the Scale mode. Clicking on one of the
mid points of the gradient outline (the rectangle), stretch it so that thegradient runs from one corner of your document to the other (see picture

Creating a Second BackgroundThe second background lies on top of the first but does not cover it completely.
To give the second background a deeper, richer coloring a Color Curve layer is
going to be added.
Creating a Vector Rectangle
Ensure the background object is still selected.
1. Select the Vector Rectangle tool from the Tool palette and ensure the
New modifier is selected in the Tool Modifier ribbon.
2. In the Tool Modifier ribbon enter 20mm in the X and Y edit boxes, 170mm
in the Width edit box and 257mm in the Height edit box.
3. Click on the Create button. A new object has now been created in the
position to the measurements you specified. The new object also has the
same paint style as the object that was selected.
4. In the Paint Style palette select the first paint style layer closest to the Fill
button and click on the Delete current layer button. This deletes theAlpha channel from the object.

Adding a Color Curve Layer
Adding a Color Curve layer to the top object deepens its coloring so that it
stands out from the first object.
1. Ensure the top object (Vector rectangle) is still selected.
2. Select the Fill button selected in the Paint Style palette. Click on the Add
Layer button.
3. Next to the word Fill there are now two picture icons, each showing that the
Picture paint style are the Fill layers. The button that is indented is theselected layer.
4. Select the Color Curve tab in the Paint Style palette.
5. The second Fill icon changes to a Color Curve icon, that is indented to show
it is active. At the same time the Color Curve controls appear.

6. The Color Curve paint style lets you color correct an object.
In CMYK mode, the curve moves from highlights at the bottom left corner,
through to midtones in the center, to shadows at the top right corner.
In RGB mode the reverse applies, that is the curve moves from shadows at
the bottom left corner to highlights at the top right corner.
7. To correct the object the Input/Output values must be entered, but first it is
a good idea to know how to move the Color Curve by using the mouse.
8. Practice clicking and dragging on different points of the Color Curve to alter
its shape and notice the effects on the second background image. To cancelthe settings press one of the Reset icons.
9. Check the Smooth Curve checkbox. The Input and Output boxes are
directly above this checkbox.
10. Enter 55 in the Input box. A small dot appears on the curve in the position
55.
11. Enter 64 in the Output box.
12. Select Add . This adds a point to the curve, applying the values that you
have entered above.

Cloning the RivetsThe next step is to remove two rivets from the second background picture. This is
achieved using the Clone tool to airbrush some of the background picture over
the rivets.
Selecting the Picture Layer
Ensure the top object (Vector rectangle) is still selected.
In the Paint Style palette select the Picture paint style icon next to the Fill
button.
Using the Clone Tool
1. Select the Clone tool from the Tool palette and then the Add modifier
in the Tool Modifier ribbon.
2. Set the Brush type to Paintbrush.
3. Set the Size to 20mm (width of the brush).
4. Set the Hardness to 0 (determines the amount of feathering on the edge of the brush).
5. Set the Spacing to 12% (determines the spacing between brush strokes).
6. Set the Opacity to100% (amount of transparency at the center of the
brush).
7. Set Round to100% (degree of roundness).
8. Set the Angle to 0 (angle of the brush).
9. Set the Texture to 1 (amount of texture in the brush).

• The Destination brush.
11. When the Clone tool is selected you see both brushes. The Source brush is
always a crosshair, but the Destination brush can be changed by selecting a
different cursor from the Cursor drop down menu in the Brush Style ribbon
bar. The Source Brush is placed in the area you want to clone from, while
the Destination Brush is moved to the area you want to clone to.
12. Ensure that the Destination Brush is a circle. To bring the Source and
Destination brushes together, press Esc.
13. Place the Source Brush approximately 20mm below the rivets sloping
downwards to the right of the page and approximately 130mm across from
the left hand side of the page.
14. Hold down the CTRL key to anchor the Source brush.
15. Still holding down the CTRL key, move the Destination brush over the third
rivet from the right.
16. Gently brush over the rivet until it disappears.
17. Move the Destination brush over to the fifth rivet from the right.
18. Gently brush over it until the rivet disappears.
19. Choose the Select tool from the Tool palette.
20. Deselect the object by clicking anywhere outside the page, or press

Using the Navigator Palette
1. The cutting out of this object requires close up work. It is easier to do if you
zoom in to the area you are working on. One way of doing this is to use the
Navigator palette to zoom in.
2. If you do not already have the Navigator palette displayed, choose
Window > Palettes > Navigator, or press F7.
3. Place the cursor onto the Navigator palette. The cursor turns into a
crosshair.
4. Drag a bounding box around the base of the glass. The selected area fills thedesktop. The bounding box is called the Viewport.
5. To move the viewport to a new position, keeping the same zoom level, place
your cursor on the edge of the viewport to display a four-headed arrow and
drag it to a new position.
6. To create a new viewport click and drag on a new area.

Using the Vector Curved Polygon Tool and Crop Modifier
1. Select the Vector Curved Polygon tool from the Tool palette and the
Crop modifier in the Tool Modifier ribbon.
2. Click anywhere on the edge of the Glass, then move the cursor forward and
click another point.
3. Continue plotting points in this way. When you require a corner hold down
the SHIFT key and click a point.
As you move around the Glass press the SPACEBAR to center your pagefrom where the cursor is positioned, or click the right mouse button with
the cursor on the area you wish to zoom on and select Zoom In (+).
5. When you reach the starting point the crosshair changes to an arrow. Click
again to create a cropped vector object.
The cutout disappears as it is being made. This progress is shown in theTask Manager.

The CompassIn this lesson you:

8. Select Mode 5 in the Paint Style palette, which shows the masked area
dropped out. This gives you an idea how the mask will look when you build
it.

10. Continue clicking until most of the white area is removed.
11. When you notice that parts of the Compass face are disappearing, it means
you have overdone the masking. In that case, choose Edit > Undo, or press
CTRL+Z to go back one step in the masking process. There could be some
white pixels around the compass but they will be airbrushed away later on.
12. Select Build Mask in the Tool Modifier ribbon.
13. Press F5 to display the Task Manager and see how the mask build is going.

6. Set the Opacity to 100% (amount of transparency at the center of the
brush).
7. Set Round to 100% (degree of roundness).
8. Set the Angle to 0 (angle of the brush).
9. Set Texture to 1 (amount of texture in the brush).
10. Set the Resolution to 11.81 ppmm (resolution of the brush stroke).
11. Ensure that the Brush tool cursor is round. If not, change the cursor from
the Cursor drop down menu on the Tool Modifier ribbon.
12. Brush away the white pixels around the Compass and along the border of
the picture. You may wish to alter the size of your brush as you delete areas
around the edge of the compass.
13. Change to the Add modifier and brush in the pixels of the picture within
the compass that were removed when building the mask.

Scaling and Positioning the Compass

Applying a Color Curve Layer
Next a Color Curve layer is going to be applied to the Compass object to give ita golden hue.
1. Ensure the compass is still selected.
2. Select the Fill button in the Paint Style palette and select Add Layer .
3. Next to the Fill button there are now two Picture paint style icons, each
showing that a Picture paint style has been selected. The icon that is
indented is the selected layer.
4. Select the Color Curve tab in the Paint Style palette.
5. The second Picture icon now changes to the Color Curve icon, which isindented to show it is active. At the same time the Color Curve controls

Rotating the Compass
Notice that the Shadow appears as a separate object in the Object List. TheCompass itself is the parent. Whenever you move or transform the Compass the
Shadow moves or transforms accordingly. The Shadow can also move
independently. This is useful for the next step, which is rotating the Compass.
1. Select the Select tool from the Tool palette.
2. Select the Compass from the Object List.
3. Select the Select entire object and Rotate icons in the Tool Modifier ribbon.

Clearing the Paint Style Palette of LayersFor this lesson you need to clear your Paint Style palette. This is necessary
because Wright Pro Design stores the last information you entered and if you
have any existing layers in the Paint Style palette they appear in the image
you are loading.
This only occurs when you are loading an image into an object, forexample a Bitmap or Vector Rectangle.
1. Create a new document called Fiji.
2. Display the Paint Style palette.
3. Next to the Fill mode button are the existing layers that make up this Paint
Style. Select each one and delete them using the Subtract modifier.

Creating a Vector Rectangle1. Select the Vector Rectangle tool from the Tool palette and the New

Creating Text Along a PathCreating text along a path means that you can format text in any freeform shape.
Drawing and Editing a Path
1. Select the Vector Curved Polygon tool from the Tool palette and the
New modifier from the Tool Modifier ribbon.
2. Click on the Stroke button in the Paint Style palette and select the Tint
paint style.
3. Select the Sliders Color Picker and change the sliders to 0 C, 0 M, 0 Y and
100 K .
4. Draw a curved line starting approximately in the middle of the picture box onthe left hand side, and snaking its way up to approximately three quarters up
the right hand side of the picture box as shown below. To create a point click
at the position you wish to start the curve.
5. Press ENTER when your cursor is at the end point of the line. Your Vector
Curved polygon is created.

6. It is possible to change the shape of your curve with the Bezier tool. To
change the shape select the Bezier tool from the Tool palette and select anode that appears along the line. Dragging the node changes the curve of the
line. The control handles that connect to the nodes can also be used to control

appears.

Applying a Drop Cap
With the Text tool still selected.
1. Place the text insertion bar anywhere within the first paragraph.
2. Select More from the Tool Modifier ribbon.
3. Click on the Drop Caps checkbox and enter 3 in the Lines edit box.
4. Click OK.
5. The first letter F is now a Drop Cap with a height of 3 lines.
6. Select the Select tool in the Tool palette.
7. Deselect the text by clicking anywhere outside the page, or press
CTRL+SHIFT+A.
8. Save your work, press CTRL+S.

Placing and Rotating the Picture of theDiver 1. Select the Vector Rectangle tool from the Tool palette and the new
modifier in the Tool Modifier ribbon.2. Enter 110 mm in the X edit box.
3. Enter 127 mm in the Y edit box.
4. Enter 90 mm in the Width edit box.
5. Enter 110 mm in the Height edit box..
6. Then click on the Create button.

7. With the rectangle still selected, choose File > Place Picture, or press
CTRL+I. The Place Picture dialog box appears.8. Double click on the Diver picture to place it into the rectangle.
9. Select on the Select tool in the Tool palette.
10. Select the Select layers only and Scale icons in the Tool Modifier
ribbon.
11. To rotate the picture -50º hold down the SHIFT key then click and drag on a
corner handle (refer to the R: edit box in the Tool Modifier ribbon).
12. To move the picture within the object, place the cursor in the middle of the
picture, click and drag it to the position shown below.

13. Select the Select entire object mode in Tool Modifier ribbon anddeselect the rectangle by clicking off the page.

Placing and Scaling the Picture of theBoats1. Select the Vector Rectangle tool from the Tool palette and the New
modifier in the Tool Modifier ribbon.
2. Enter 76 mm in the X edit box.
3. Enter 250 mm in the Y edit box.
4. Enter 24 mm in the Width edit box.
5. Enter 37 mm in the Height edit box..
6. Click on the Create button.
7. The Rectangle is displayed with the picture of the Diver in it.
8. With this rectangle still selected, choose File > Place Picture. The Place
Picture dialog box appears.
9. Double click on the Boats picture to place it into the rectangle.
10. Select the Select tool from the Tool palette.
11. Select the Select layers only and Scale icons in the Tool Modifier ribbon.
12. To scale the picture 20%, click and drag on a corner handle (refer to the X%
and Y% edit boxes in the Tool Modifier ribbon).
13. You may want to turn Snap to Guides off when you are dragging the object,
as the picture boundary will keep snapping to the guides. Choose Guides >
Snap to Guides, or press CTRL + SHIFT + M.
14. To move the picture within the object, place the cursor in the middle of the
picture, click and drag to move the picture to the position shown below.

Flowing Text around ObjectsIn this lesson you learn how flow the text around the picture boxes. Changing theshape of your text container using the Bezier tool does this.
Changing the Shape of the Left Text Box1. Select the Zoom tool from the Tool palette.
2. Click and drag a rectangle over the Boat object to zoom in.
3. Select the Select tool from the Tool palette.
4. Place the cursor on the Vertical ruler and drag a guide onto your page
approximately 3mm from the left edge of the Boat object.
5. Place the cursor on the Horizontal ruler and drag a guide onto your page approximately 3mm from the top edge of the Boat object.
6. Select the Text object on the left hand side of the page.
7. Select the Bezier tool from the Tool palette.
8. You have to add nodes to the text container. To add a node, double click
on the edge of the text container.
9. Add one node at the intersection of the guides at the top right of the picture box and another at the intersection of the guides at the bottom left of the
picture box.

10. In the tool modifier ribbon check Snap nodes to guides.
11. Click on the first node you added and snap it to the point where the guides
intersect.
12. Click on the second node you added and snap it to the point where the guides
intersect.
13. Move the cursor over the node in the bottom right corner of the text box until
the cursor turns black in the center. Click and drag to move the node to snapit to the intersection of the guides at the top left of the picture box.
14. The text is reflowed inside the text box.
15. Select the Select tool from the Tool palette.
16. Zoom out, press CTRL + 0.
17. Deselect the Text object by clicking off the page, or press CTRL+SHIFT+A.
