Women in Probation

What we do in the Skillnet Group

Supporting Change TogetherThe Skillnet Group Limited Registered Office:

2nd Floor, Maybrook House, Queen’s Gardens, Dover, Kent, CT17 9AH

Person Centred Planning

‘Person centred’ means doing things in a way that the person wants and which helps them to be part of their community. If someone is in the centre of something, they are the most important person.

The key things to think about in person centred

planning/approaches

Life Choices Project People are supported to think

about what they want to do in the future.

Dawn’s Life Choices

Opened A Bank Account Learning to Cook Would like to live on my own

Visiting Schools to make people aware of Learning Difficulties

How we want to be treated

Equal Rights

Everyone has had good and bad experiences

Some people have had more bad life experiences than others.

This is not good enough.

How people can be treated differently?

People make fun of you People only see the disability not the

person

People can ignore you People don’t treat you equally in

shops, on public transport and at other times.

I feel bullied

I feel angry

I feel sad

I feel alone

I feel frustrated

I feel stressed

How does this make us feel?

What we want is…

To be treated equally and fairly To be treated as an individual with

our own personal space To choose where we live, who we live

with and what we do To have people listen to us and take

us seriously To be given a chance to prove

ourselves

We do not want?

To be bullied or treated differently.

Other people to make decisions for us because they think they know best.

To be treated as all the same just because we have learning difficulties. We are all individuals and have different needs.

Positive things that people with a learning difficulty/disability can achieve

We have worked with the Passport Office

Some of us have paid jobs

Some of us have gained qualifications

Some of us live independently

Self Advocacy

Self-advocacy means speaking up for ourselves and making sure people know our views and take us seriously.

Skillnet Group - Eco Shed

The Eco Shed is in Sittingbourne and supports people with learning difficulties to learn new skills for work.

How can we make it easier?

Mick Cronin is a CommunityLiaison Officer for Kent Police. He had a meeting with people from the Skillnet Group.

How can we make it easier?

Together we made a film with role plays so that people can see the best way to talk to the Police and not be so worried.

Our planning group

We all met at the Landmark Centre in Deal. We planned what we would do next.

Afterwards

We all talked about our role plays. We talked about what we would say.

Mick and Janet told us what the Police would say and do.

We all said we would be happy to call the Police.

Making a film

We have all decided that we will make a film.

We want other people to see that it can be easy to talk to the Police.
