Social rights of Women in Islam

Historical review Conditions were inferior for the women in the past, she

was treated worse than animals. In the ancient and medieval civilizations like Greeks,

Roman, Early Christians, Hindus and Pagan Arabs, women alone having no rights, she was not even considered to be a human being.

Like a piece of property, she was a marketable commodity and subject of testamentary disposition.

Polygamy was common in almost all societies. Birth of daughter was considered to be bad and a matter

of shame. Particularly in Pagan Arabs

Status of women in Islam

• The Muslim woman did not have to struggle for her rights.

• Al-Quran and hadith of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.W) guide the whole mankind about the women rights.

• Islam evaluated the status of women.• Quran calls man and women as spouses

of each other.• Islam granted on the women

innumerable rights.

Following are the rights bestowed by Islam

• Rights to acquire education• rights regarding inheritance• Ownership of property• Rights of marriage• Rights of dower• Earning of livelihood• Participation in the socio-political life of

the Muslim ummah• Rights of maintenance

Verses of the Qur’an :

(He) hath made me kind to my mother, and not overbearing or miserable;(19:32)

) سلوک ) نیک ساتھ کے ماں اپنی مجھے اور ) بنایا ) نہیں وبدبخت سرکش اور ہے بنایا والا کرنے

And marry not women whom your fathers married,___ expect what is past: It was shameful and odious,___ an abominable custom indeed.(4:22)

Hadith of the Prophet( s.a.w.w)

Mugirah reported that the Messenger of Allah said

Allah made unlawful to you disobedience to mothers, burying alive of daughters, and refusing help.

( Bukhari, Muslim )

Rights of women as a wife

» As wife Verses of the Qur’an :

So women who are virtuous are obedient to God and guard the hidden as God has guarded it. As for women you feel are averse, talk to them suasively; then leave them

alone in bed (without molesting them) and go to bed with them (when they are willing). If they open out to you, do not seek an excuse for blaming them. Surely God is sublime and

great. (4:34)

A Hadith of The Prophet:

Nothing among the choicest blessings of the world is better than a virtuous wife. (Ibn Majah )

When a man has two wives and he does not deal equitably between them, he will on the Resurrection Day with a side handing down.( Tirmizi, Abu Daud, Ibn Mahah)

"The most perfect in faith amongst believers is he who is best in manners and kindest to his wife." [Abu Dawud]

Rights of women as a daughter

» As daughter Verse of the Qur’an:

When the female (infant), buried alive, is questioned- for what crime she was killed; (81: 8-9)

گا جائے پوچھا ہو گئی دی دفنا زندہ جو سے لڑکی جب اورگئ پرماری گناہ کس وہ کہ

Kill not your children for fear of want: we shall provide sustenance for them as well as for you: verily the killing of them is a great sin.

(17: 31)

) کہ ) نہیں شک کچھ ہیں۔ دیتے رزق ہی ہم کو تم اور کو ان کیونکہ کرنا۔ نہ قتل سے خوف کے مفلسی کو اولاد اپنی اورہے گناہ سخت بڑا ڈالنا مار کا ان

A Hadith by the Holy Prophet

Whoever maintains two girls till they attain maturity, he and I will come on the Resurrection Day like this; and he joined his fingers. (Muslim)

If anybody has got a female child, then does neither bury her alive, nor treats her unjustly, nor prefers his children (meaning male children) to her, Allah will admit him in Paradise. (Abu Daud)

Rights of women as a sister

As sister Verse of the Qur’an:

Prohibited to you (For marriage) are: your mothers, daughters, sisters; father’s sisters,(4: 23) ) ( ) خدا ) شک بے چکا ہو سو چکا ہو جو مگر ہے حرام بھتیجیاں اور خالائیں اور پھوپھیاں اور بہنیں اور بیٹیاں اور مائیں تمہاری پر تم

) ہے ) والا کرنے رحم اور والا بخشنے

The sister is entitled to receive share in inheritance.

A Hadith by the Holy Prophet:

If someone brings up three or two daughters or sisters, teaches them good manners and treats them kindly, Allah will admit him into paradise.

Islam as a code of life

Islam is a complete code of life not only for men but also for women. It gives equal rights to men and women.

Islam is the first sun that embrace women with light of all social, economic, legal and political rights before 15 centuries.
