Victim of pedestrian/vehicle accident at Duke University.

Problem Definition• Specific: We want the campus community to use

crosswalks on Dan Allen

• Measurable: Improved orderly flow of pedestrian and vehicle traffic

• Agreed Upon: In order for this to be implemented, the project must be approved by University Administration

• Realistic: Based on standards set at other UNC System schools – yes

• Time Bound: Up to 6 years dependent upon receiving capital improvement funding

Purpose Statement

• We want campus community to use crosswalks on Dan Allen in order to improve orderly flow of pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

Main Focus

•Dan Allen Drive from Faucette Street to Founders

•Focus broken down to 3 specific areas of Dan Allen

Sullivan Drive

•Faucette Street to Sullivan Drive

Current Situation – Focus Area 1

• No crosswalk where there are curb cuts – at the Hodges intersection.

• Crosswalks not clearly defined at Sullivan intersection.

Current Situation – Focus Area 2

• Crosswalk at Bragaw Hall is not clearly marked with road paint.

• Jaywalking and heavy traffic congestion at Cates intersection.

Current Situation – Focus Area 3

• Raised crosswalk not clearly marked with signs or road paint.

Proposed Solutions – Focus Area 1

• Add painted crosswalks and road signs at the curb cuts already in place.

• Michigan State Study.

Proposed Solutions – Focus Area 2

• Add visibility to existing crosswalk with signs and paint.

• Enforce using existing crosswalks with police issued warning and tickets.

• Add 3-way stop at Cates Avenue intersection.

Proposed Solutions – Focus Area 3

• Add visibility to existing crosswalk with signs and paint.

• Enforce using existing crosswalks with police issued warning and tickets.

• Add signs to (Yield to peds) Dan Allen deck crosswalk at Yarborough intersection.
