William Shakespeare’s works:•Lived from 1564 – 1616

•There is not much known of his life

•Most famous playwright and poet in English History

•Wrote 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, 38 dramatic works

•Nickname “Bard of Avon”

•Parents John and Mary

•Had seven siblings

•King’s New Grammar School

•Did not attend university

Marriage and children:•Married at age 18 with Anne Hathaway

•Had three children: Susanna, Judith and Hamnet

The Lost Years: First period (1578 – 1582): time when Shakespeare leaves his school and his marriage with Anne Hathaway

Second period (1582 – 1592) : time between his marriage and the London Theatre

These years are called “lost” because there is not much information about Shakespeare’s activities.

Theatre and career in London:• 1592: aready known as playwright

• 1594: was actor, playwright and part-owner of playing company Lord Chamberlain's Men

• 1598: appeared on lists as selling point

• 1599: the Globe

• 1605: started pulling back

The Globe: •Built in 1599, by the playing company called Lord Chamberlain’s Men

•Destroyed and rebuilt many times

•Nowadays opened as “Shakespeare’s Globe”

The coat of arms:•Applied for the coats of arms

twice

•Managed to get it in 1599

•“Non sanz droict”

Later years in London and Stratford:•Probably finished his acting career

•After 1606–1607, wrote fewer plays and none after 1613

•Three last plays were probably collaborations

•After 1613 moved back to Straford, only visiting London

Shakespeare’s death:• Died on 23 April 1616, at the age of 52

• Cause of death is unknown

•Buried in the chancel of Holy Trinity Church in Stratford-upon-Avon

Written on his tomb:

Good frend for Iesvs sake forbeare,

To digg the dvst encloased heare.

Blest be ye man yt spares thes stones,

And cvrst be he yt moves my bones.

Shakespeare’s will:• Left most of his estates to older daughter Susanna, but Judith was not left out. Also, left some money to his granddaughter and closer friends

•For Anne, Shakespeare had left a puzzlying note: "Item I gyve unto my wief my second best bed with the furniture."
