The vast majority of people live in societies in which the interest of the group(*) prevails over the interest of the individual.
A minority of people live in societies in which one is expected to stand on his own
(*) group: extended family AND nuclear family

INDIVIDUALISM: societies where ties b/w individuals are loose; everyone is expected to look after oneself and the immediate family.
COLLECTIVISM: societies in which people from birth onward are integrated into strong cohesive groups (that) provide protection in exchange of unquestionable loyalty.
