This slide deck was inspired by a conversation by The Linked2Leadership group on LinkedIn – credit to David Witt who posted the question and all the creative voices that offered their thoughts.

Why are managers and supervisors so stingy with praise?

One day, a wise man asked,

Why should I praise them? They’re doing what they’re paid to do.

He heard many answersPeople are managers, not leaders.

We lack genuine leaders.

Too much praise spoils.

People may see you as weak and take advantage.

People are raised in praise stingy environments so they never learn how.

I don’t know...!?

Can I go back to my computer now?

Please?

Under Theory X, management view workers as lazy and ignorant. Thus, the strategy is to create an environment to force people to work.Theory Y assumes an intelligent, imaginative and energetic workforce. Therefore, a Theory Y manager therefore is simply to find out what the workforce needs in order to do a good job.
