According to 2008 data presented by the US Census, 41.3 million Americans live their dailylives with some level of mental or physical disability. The same report indicates 2.7 million people, 15 years of age or older use a wheelchair, while another 9.1 million use an ambu-latory aid such as a cane, crutches or walker.

A person’s lack of mobility or ne motor skills is often acutely apparent in lack of accessto outdoor recreation. Access to favored outdoor activities such as shing, hiking, bird watching, boating, gardening, or biking often ends at the parking lot or curb, where trailsbecome inaccessible, and available equipment is inadequate to meet the needs of theoutdoor enthusiast with a disability.
