What’s New in Social Media and What It Means to Your

Career

2016 has seen more substantive changes to the way social media platforms

influence business than ever before.

Much of the growth in social media over the last two years has been driven by

companies using social media for everything from sales to hiring.

As social media evolves once again, what it means to your career is becoming

even more important.

This presentation will demonstrate how you can take advantage of this

evolution and get yourself in front of the right people!

What will we cover today?

• What is Social Media?

• Why you need to be on Social Media

• Changing Demographics

• Platform changes and how they affect you

• Benefits of Blogging

What is Social Media ?

Why you need to be on

Social Media

online information about

job applicants before

making a hiring decision.

Of those, over 70% said

that they rejected candidates

based on information that they

found—or didn’t find—online.

Benefits of Blogging

Content & SEO

• Content is now the new SEO!

– Keywords and hashtags still matter, but Content is King…

• Blogs provide additional benefits for you:

– A chance to write more in-depth than a small post on another platform.

– An opportunity to share (show off) your expertise.

– Enhanced opportunity for others to find your work.

– Businesses find value in Blogs because of the deeper content.

Blogging Platforms

• Blogger

– This is a Google product.

– Can cross-post automatically to Google+

• Tumblr

– This is a Yahoo platform.

• WordPress.com

– Free: for Blogging

• WordPress.org

– Paid: to build and host your website.

Choosing a Blog platform

Platforms:

How do they affect YOU?

Demographic shifts mean platform shifts

Instagram is the new Facebook Snap is the new Instagram

Favored by youth & Millennials

Favored by Tech companies

Now the broadest audience

Get comfy with video

– it is worth it!

LinkedIn is still where the world

does business!

Your professional persona must

be on LinkedIn!

Primary tool for recruiters & HR

Wait! What about Facebook???

• Yes, Facebook still has over 1.7 Billion people on it…

• Take advantage of live video capability for a large audience, but

– The demographic has changed!

– Facebook is now more frequently used by working professionals with an age

range of 40 and above.

– Facebook has become highly popular among retirees and the elderly who are

displaced geographically from their families.

But remember the important pieces…

• There are companies on every platform.

• Keys to Success:

– Find the most appropriate platform(s) for you.

– Post regularly so people will expect to see you.

– You must post at least once a week to LinkedIn…

• …or you are invisible.

– Regulate what goes on your page.

• Create a Professional Page on Facebook for free!

– Like a company page, where you have complete control.

– Send a consistent message across platforms.
