L.O. to create a weird and wonderful school
This week your task is to create weird and wonderful schools…either somewhere really great or somewhere really horrible!
Your first task is to choose the theme of your school.
Finally, write a short paragraph to describe your school.
Challenge!
Design a logo or badge for
the school.
Description of my schoolHiding behind a tree, I gazed up towards the ivy covered building standing crooked on the hill. Wondering what was behind those wooden doors. My eyes scanned the tall turrets and the grey stone walls made me shiver.
All of a sudden, a rumble of thunder shook the earth and a flash of lightening sped through the sky. CRASH! BANG! I pulled my jacket tight around my body. What was mum thinking sending me here, it looked like it was straight out of a horror comic!
Picking up my heavy cases, I made my way down the
cobbled path to the entrance. Above the colossal
doorway hung a sign, ‘Welcome to Chilly Bones School
for Monsters, the finest academic establishment for
beasts, creatures, ghouls and fiends’.

Your next task is to create some characters for your school…teachers, students, parents, cleaners and anybody else that you might need!
We need pictures of them and some information about them – they are important, because we can’t have a school with nobody in it!
Don’t forget to include some good and some bad characters – it will make your school more interesting!
Challenge!
Choose one of your
characters and write
a character
description.

Good or bad
character?
Position in the
school?
Character description• “Welcome, all of you, I am Mr Lupin, your new
headmaster of this marvellous establishment, “ he announced as he glared at the pupils as they sat, spellbound on the hall floor. There wasn’t an ounce of friendliness in his voice.
• The young monsters and ghouls looked at the man standing in front of them. He was tall and thin, dressed in an immaculate black suit. From his shoulders, a long, black teacher’s gown hung in heavy folds, like wings, giving him the appearance of a huge crow. Only his head was startlingly white. Fair hair, almost as colourless as snow, lay round a face with paper-white skin and crimson lips. His eyes were hidden behind dark glasses, like two black holes in the middle of all the whiteness.

Now it’s time for some creative writing about your school.
Your next task is to write a short story or comic strip about an adventure in your school. You can use the characters and ideas that you have already created to get you started.
Remember to think about the style or genre of your story – will it be horror, adventure, comedy, romance or something else?
Challenge!
Try designing a cover
page and blurb for your
short story or comic
strip.
L.O. to create a weird and wonderful school
After six years of moving to different schools, Lizzy and Eddie Harker thought they had seen it all. They had been pupils on a boat school in Singapore, at a mountain top shack in the Alps and even in a medieval castle in a remote Hungarian forest – their parents travelled far and wide for their work and the two children were always uncomplainingly dragged along for the ride. Now, however, as Lizzy and Eddie gazed up for the first time at the huge spooky looking castle of their latest school building, they both felt something strange and uncomfortable; this place felt, well...different.A long cobbled path led up to the colossal wooden front door, which looked to have been firmly locked for many years. The painted sign above the door was extremely faded, but the children could just about make out the words ‘Chilly Bones School For M...’

“School for M...?” muttered Eddie. “What does that mean?”“No idea,” replied Lizzy. “Why don’t we go up and find out? You first.”Normally, Lizzy would never pass up the chance to make the first impression at a new place, but her usual confidence was missing this morning and the sight of this unwelcoming building was not doing much to build it back up again.Eddie took a tentative towards the building. Satisfied, there was nothing to worry about he made his way up to the entrance. Eddie could see that the door seemed to be bulging outwards, swelling as though some powerful force were trying to burst out and reach for him or, even worse, pull him inside. A cold sweat had broken out across his body, even though it was a warm September morning, causing Eddie to wonder again what it was about this place...why did it feel so strange?

“Hurry up!” groaned Lizzie, “these bags way a tonne and it’s starting to rain.”“Welcome,” echoed a voice in the darkness. The two spun around. Someone was coming towards them. TO BE CONTINUED…
