WHAT THE HECK IS LECTURE CAPTURE?B Bagby – Head Media Geek

A Terrible Name – Here are some better ones:• Flipped Classroom• Asynchronous Instruction• Audio / Video Recording of Instruction• Blended Learning• Podcasting• Vodcasting (I hate this one)• Lots of other names…

The flipped model puts more of the responsibility for learning on the shoulders of students while giving them greater impetus to experiment.

7 Things You Should Know about… Flipped Classrooms: http://trc.virginia.edu/Flipping%20the%20Classroom.pdf

A really good graphic that explains “The Flipped Classroom”: http://www.knewton.com/flipped-classroom/

Google: “Flipped Classroom”, “Flipping the Classroom”

Probably the most famous example is Khan Academyhttp://www.khanacademy.org

Your homework is to go to the site, and watch Sal’s talk at TED 2011. It’s worth your time!

Homework in Class, Lectures at Home

Someone described lectures as being “Distance Learning” anyhow. If you’re not interacting with the subject, why not deliver it as a video?

Every class becomes a hands on lab!

But Wait! There’s More!

It’s not just flipping. Sometimes it’s just improving on the existing model!

How is it being Used?• English instructor records herself reading poems. Students listen to the

poems at home. Class is entirely discussion based.• Statistics instructor records himself working each problem. Class is

spent on new material, rather than reviewing past concepts.• Instructor records F2F class. DL students now have a “real” classroom

lecture to watch.• Instructor create two minute videos restating a problem or question that

seems to come up every class.

What our students say• For students whose instructors record

their F2F class: How important do you find these recordings of the F2F class:

What Teachers Say

• Offering podcasts of lectures has the potential to improve students' mastery of course material. In surveys, students report gaining a better understanding of class material in courses that used the technology2

• No noticeable impact on students' class attendance. Despite a common fear among instructors that students will stop coming to class if they have access to a lecture recording, surveys at various institutions in the US and the UK have indicated that access to lecture podcasts generally does not impact students' decision to attend class1

• Deeper engagement with course material. Undergraduate students have reported in focus groups and surveys that podcasts helped them stay focused on the course, made learning more fun and informal, supported independent learning, and enabled deep engagement with course material3
