of work?

What is enterprise and why is it important?

In this session we are going to look at these 2

questions.

What Employers WantWhen applying for a job, employers will want to know about yourqualifications and skills that are relevant to the role you are applying for.

Employers are also keen to hire peoplewho are innovative and enterprising.

What do we mean by innovation

and enterprise?

What Employers Want

When people talk about innovation they are referring to new andcreative ideas. Being able to offer fresh ideas, think of different waysof doing things or come up with exciting new products are greatskills to have.

Innovation

When a person is enterprising they are resourceful and inventive.Problem-solving skills, thinking imaginatively and being original areimportant in many fields of work.

Enterprise

What Employers WantYou can see why employers might want an employee to have these skills.

You might be surprised to know that every one of us can possess thesetraits and many of you are probably already being innovative andenterprising.

Can you think of a timewhen you have come upwith a new idea, thoughtof a different way ofdoing something, inventedsomething or solved aproblem?

Which Skill?Innovation and enterprise cover many important skills that we learn inschool.

These can be grouped into seven core skills:

• positivity;

• making decisions;

• teamwork;

• creativity;

• listening to others;

• presenting ideas;

• problem-solving.

These skills are ones that we can practise right now.

Let’s think a bit more about these skills and look at examples of each one.

Activity 1: Which Skill?Match the seven core skills to the seven statements each containing a differentscenario.

Read them out, try todecide on which skilleach scenario bestrepresents. There couldbe more than oneanswer.You could draw arrowsbetween them to matchthem up, if you’reworking on the sheet, oryou can copy thestatements into yourHome Learning Book,with the skill you thinkit matches next to it.

The customer is the person paying for the product or service. It is important to know what the customer wants or needs.

The budget is an initial amount of money that is available to spendon a project. Companies must make sure that they have a businessplan in place to show they have thought about all the things theywill need to spend money on.

Advertising is what companies do to let thecustomers know about their product or service.They can advertise in magazines, on television, onthe radio, on billboards and online. The advertsneed to persuade the customer to buy the productor service.

Profit is the amount of money a company hasmade after they have paid all their expenses. It isnecessary to make a profit in order to grow thebusiness further and to stay successful.

Extension: Ice Lolly ChallengeSee how many of the seven core skills you can put into practice!

• Consider who will buy your ice lolly.

You will also need to create a business plan.

• What will it look like? Remember you must not copy an existing product.

• What will the packaging look like? Will you have a logo?

• How will you advertise the new ice lolly and where will it be sold?

• How much will it cost to make and how much will you sell it for?
